A good friend recommended Mad Man and I finally got around to it on DVD--exciting little slice of history. I do hope it is slightly exagerrated, though! The blatant use of women as sexual objects is womewhat upsetting, but the underplayed acting is great!
...

RudysMom says "The best show currently on cable!" about Mad Men Season One

Great writing, combined with stellar acting and beautiful production values equals the best show on television right now - Mad Men. Both seasons one and two are currently available on DVD, and the third season begins airing in August.

But this may not be the show for everyone - it's quirky, set in the 1960s, and the lead character is quite an ambivalent guy - crossing the line from devious to sweet each week, and living on the edge of reality. The storyline draws you into the business and personal lives of advertising executives enjoying the new television-era of on-air commercials. The authentic detail to history, costumes, fads, products, automobiles, New York restaurants, and hairstyles is totally enthralling.

I recommend viewing season one and two before delving into the coplex world of Mad Men on AMC. But it's like a soap opera - easy to catch up each week and easy to get caught up in the drama, intensity, lust and hilarity of this fine show.

fmsauthor says "Refreshingly adult drama" about Mad Men Season One

This series was a lovely surprise. Finally, something for the adults to watch. It brought back lots of memories of life in the 50's and made me grateful for the advances made in the lives of women since that time. I've only viewed 3 episodes, but am looking forward to seeing much more. My only criticism is there are a few too many cigarettes.
...

jec says "Good show, but lays on the 1960s themes a little thick." about Mad Men Season One

AMC's MAD MEN is one of the better shows on television right now. The trials and tribulations of a group of advertising executives at a New York firm in the early 1960s make for fascinating television, a exploration of the business and social climate of the era that saw men asserting their virility from the confines of an office while women worked as secretaries or stayed at home to raise the kids. Despite an excellent cast and very strong writing, the show can be a little off-putting at times, if only because the suburban malaise element familiar to anyone who has read Revolutionary Road is laid on a little too think, serving as the basis for nearly every episode in the first season.

As a DVD or Blu-ray, the show plays well in large chunks and includes some informative extras.
...

jmdobies says "Sharply Written, Well-Acted Drama About Early '60s Ad Execs" about Mad Men Season One

I haven't watched AMC much in recent years, ever since they added commercial breaks to their movies, and stopped showing classics in favor of '80s and '90s films. However, the channel scored a coup when they landed Mad Men, a drama set in the world of Sterling-Cooper, an early '60s advertising agency (on Madison Avenue, hence the title). Since creator/producer Matthew Weiner was part of the creative team behind The Sopranos, HBO had the right of first refusal on this series, but passed. It's HBO's loss and AMC's gain.

The first season of the acclaimed series has been collected in this DVD, and it is impressive indeed. I enjoyed watching the episodes without commercials, although after viewing the show on AMC, you can look at the ads with a different perspective. Last time I watched the show, one of the spots was for an aid in quitting smoking, which most of the characters on the show could really use. In capturing the look and feel of America circa 1960, the constant cloud of cigarette smoke...
...
