The 2007 film adaptation of the novel by Nobel Prize winning Author, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Love In The Time Of Cholera, is a noble, but ultimately unsatisfying, attempt to capture the epic scope and passion of the widely acclaimed novel. Set in South America in the late 1800's, this film succeeds more as a sumptuous period drama, than an epic romance, due to lack of character development and bland storytelling.

In the early scenes of the film, a young man of limited means, Florentino (Unax Ugalde) falls in love at first sight, with a beautiful young girl, Fermina (Giovanna Mezzogiorno). Her disapproving father (John Leguzamo), does everything possible to discourage the romance, hoping for a more lucrative match for his daughter. His dreams come true, when Fermina is treated for a suspected case of cholera, by a handsome young doctor (Benjamin Bratt), who is smitten with her beauty. The two eventually marry, much to the dismay of a brokenhearted Florentino. He vows to wait for Fermina...
...

This "lovesick" young man swears his eternal love and faithfulness for a woman...for awhile. Then, after another woman "surprises" him with his first "experience," he becomes promiscuous (600+ women). So much for "eternal love and faithfulness."...

arlenepr says "Wow, another masterpiece" about Love in the Time of Cholera (2007)

This movie enthralls you from beginning to end. If you loved Javier barden in No Country for old men, then this movie will show you the actors range as a lovesick young man who pines for his lover for over 50 years, (while counting over 600 women he's had sex with, wish i'd been one of them lol). As the story unfolds you are more enthralled with the characters. The sensing I won't give away, i'll just say it's sublime....

A story which takes in the fifty-year period at the end of the 19th and beginning of the twentieth centuries. We share the feelings of Fiorentino Ariza as he cannot help staring at the lovely but shy Fermina Daza. The film takes a turn when the accidental death of the eighty year old Dr. Juvenal Urbino, married for a half century to the seventy-two year old Fermina Daza, occurs. Visited on the day of the funeral by Florentino Ariza, she is angry at the audacity of a man who professes his lifetime love for her when the movie flashes back to their early courtship and takes us through some fifty years of their lives including her marriage and children, his numerous romantic conquests with eath of their long and eventful journeys back to the security of each other's arms. ...
