Adapted from her own novel by actress-writer Laura Esquivel (Tacos de oro, Entelineas) and directed by her husband Alfonso Arau (perhaps best known to American moviegoers as the Mexican bandit "El Guapo" in The Three Amigos!), Como agua para chocolate is a Mexican version of the Cinderella story, in which a bitter matriarch insists that her youngest daughter has to follow a family tradition and give up any notions of marriage or love and care for her till she dies.

The movie starts in the Mexico of the early 1900s: Revolution is in the air already, and the wealthy Mama Elena is giving birth to her third and youngest daughter Tita (who'll be played by several actresses but will eventually be fleshed out by Lumi Cavazos).

Mama Elena's ranch-owning husband, meanwhile, is being congratulated for becoming a father again...until someone comes and whispers in his ears that his lovely blonde wife has been doing it with a dark-skinned man. Of course, this news doesn't sit well with Mama...
...

landrew says "This movie isrmantic and challenging-- and incredibly easy to lo" about Like Water For Chocolate

This movie was written by Laura Esquivel. and directed by her then-husband. Laura Esquivel, a woman who resides in Marin County, California, was truly religious to hbook. I hate it when a movie, from a book, introduces characters and plots not in the text. This is a great date movie, albeit a sad one.

The main character, Tita, is forced to never marry or 'be with' her love, as she is required by family custom to care for her mother until she dies. Regardless, Tita becomes an expert in the Kitchen, making love to Pedro via tantaliing, succulent fare. I do warn you: the movie, and book, are in Spanish. The movie has subtitles. The book has been translated. I have read the book and tried the enclosed recipes (except for Duck, as I went to the University of Oregon-- I don't want to be a cannibal). The movie shows some of them, the book has them listed.
...

I think this is a classic love story. I read the book first and was sold on it. I was very leary of watching the movie, but soon found it really held up to the book. I usually don't like watching movies with subtitles, but It's a must with this movie. So much is lost when it is viewed in English. ...

I absolutely loved this movie. The subtle comedy will be missed by many americans, but those of us that actually enjoy a movie that makes us think outside of the typical Hollywood box, will find no end of humor, drama, and the struggle of the human spirit. ...

This movie is my all time favorite. It is a Spanish film (subtitles) It was so beautiful both in it's look and story. Love, Unrequited love, Food, War and duty all blend together to make a remarkable piece of art. It is based on an equally wonderful book. It will stay with you forever and will haunt you. That's a good thing....
