bkovacs says "Arnold, bad guys, kids, a ferret and romance... and it works!" about Kindergarten Cop - 1990

Circa 1990, no one did action films like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Some came close, such as Bruce Willis and Steven Seagal, and a few others sometimes made action films work. Then there was comedy. The number of action film stars who could pull off a comedy was vanishingly small -- besides Schwarzenegger there is really only Bruce Willis. True, Bruce Willis was REALLY good at action/comedy but Arnie's strong suit in this regard was poking gentle fun at himself. And that's where Kindergarten Cop shines most strongly.

Kindergarten Cop is really three films in one. There is a standard police/action film where the good cops stop the evil drug lord. Then there is the kids-say-the-darndest-things-and-exasperate-the-huge-man movie. Finally, there is the romance flick, where the handsome stranger sweeps the sweet schoolteacher off her feet. If you don't like all three of these plots, you probably won't really like Kindergarten Cop. If you only want action, the middle of this film will bore you to...
...

MsMoesy says "This movie is great!" about Kindergarten Cop - 1990

I think that if this film was marketed as a "Kid's Film", then yes, there are parts that would be too violent for the average 5 year old to sit through. But it's not. It is considered to be in the "Comedy" genre, with no implication that it was intended for kids. I think the fact that there is no swearing and has a lot of children in it makes it okay for families to watch, but it doesn't change the fact that this is just a comedy. And a pretty good comedy! I can watch this movie over and over and over again! I think it was grea thinking to put the "terminator" into a role where is looks so out of place, but still finds a way to show a soft side. That, and the kids in the movie are adorable! Definitely one of the flicks that I watch a lot!...

ChrisJarmick says "Intense & violent scenes ruin this one - Worst Kids Films" about Kindergarten Cop - 1990

This one is not an awful film. Parts of it are pretty funny.

Note that it is rated PG-13 and that's definitely what the film is. The problem was that this film was marketed as a light and breezy family Christmas time movie that you could take your whole family too. The commercials and trailer didn't show a couple of the more terrifying scenes where a drug dealer threatens to shoot a child' in front of his family and school children.

It was irresponsibly marketed when it was first released and like several other parents I took my very young child to see this one. I was really made by the time I left the theater, my child was so scared and freaked out she was crying. WOW.

Now it is rated PG-13 and usually that's a big warning to parents to be careful--but usually you get a sense from the previews what to expect from a film too. I thought some foul language was probably the reason.

The movie's plot: Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Kimble a very dedicated cop who goes undercover...
...
