Great movie if you don't want to take the time to read the book. John Adams was really under appreciated and this movie demonstrates the love he had for his country and lengths he went to make it an independent country and to make it better for his children.
...

Even as much as I enjoy reading and learning about American history, I've always had a tendency to favor eras which are closer to the 20th and 21st Centuries to, obviously, the detriment of other time periods, such as Colonial and post-Revolutionary War America.

Part of the blame for this falls on the way in which American history has been traditionally presented in most classrooms even since before I attended public schools here in the 1970s and '80s. We students were often given very generalized overviews of Important Events and given lists of Great Names and/or Important Concepts to memorize but never really given any insights into the almost mythical Founding Fathers who to us seemed to be all-knowing and forward-looking, yet made of marble.

Another reason of my cherry-picking habits regarding my studies of American history is that I tend to focus on military history rather than the more mundane bits, such as the Panic of 1837 or the ramifications of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff. Like...
...

The HBO mini series "John Adams" based on the book by David McCullough exceeded all my expectations. It was a riveting story of one of the most important Americans in Revolutionary history. Extremely well done. A must see even if you are not a history buff....

This series was so interesting. I think the makers of this production did an excellent job of casting. It's nice to see something about history that is not in documentary style. The music was excellent. I'd love to have the soundtrack. I have given this series 5 stars. We should see more history stories like this one!...

I loved what HBO did in producing this mimi series about a man that most of us have heard of but many of us did not know what his life was all about. This really gave an in deoth look in to the aspects of his life and his constnt struggle to make sure that America ganed its independence from the british. The dramatization that was displayed should win awards and I would recommend this to anyone that any type of interest in the History of how this country was formed....

As with many things Tom Hanks touches, this production is a wonderful adaptation of the book that focuses on John Adams' role in history. The story moves fast and spends no time in gratuitious scenes. You arrive at the end of each episode not having believed it was an hour, and immediately wanting more. The acting is very strong in a period piece. While this is a history lesson, it is also an extremely interesting and entertaining story....

msesquire says "A compelling, beautiful portrait" about John Adams

The miniseries John Adams recently concluded its seven-episode run on HBO, and it will be missed. The miniseries, based on the biography by David McCulloch, starred Paul Giamatti in the titular role and Laura Linney as Abigail Adams.

The storyline, though familiar from history lessons, was intriguing, as it showed a different perspective on the events of America's fight for independence from England. Until McCulloch's book, John Adams and his contributions to the formation of our nation were largely ignored and overshadowed by those of his contemporaries. Though John Adams highlights these actions, it also does not shy away from showing Adams's foibles as well, including his arrogance and pride, presenting a well-rounded portrait of the man and forefather.

As interesting as these scenes were, I found the view into the relationship of John and Abigail Adams to be even more compelling. It was clear that the Adamses had a more modern relationship than their contemporaries, as John...
...

Being a history geek, as my teenage son calls me, I read John Adams soon after it came out, so I was really excited when I saw that HBO films had made a mini-series out of it. I am happy to say that I was not disappointed in what they did in bringing the story to the screen. It was true to the book and historically accurate. At the same time, it was full of passion, both in portraying John Adams' love for his new country, as well as his lifelong love for his wife.

As impressed as I was with HBO's portrayal of John Adams and his fellow patriots' fiery personalities, I was equally impressed with their handling of Abigail Adams. John Adams felt that she was at least as intelligent as him and that she would have made a formidable representative at the Continental Congress, had the times allowed for her to be in that kind of position. As that was not an option, the viewer could feel her frustration, but it could also be seen how she channeled her own passion for her new country,...
...
