I first visited Japonais in June 2007 for my best friend's 21st birthday. This place is perfect for a celebratory occasion, particularly the open air patio located on the lower level of the restaurant. It faces the river and really sets the tone for a special evening. The food is delicious, although if you're on a tight budget you'll want to steer clear. (Keep in mind I'm young and don't have a large disposable income!) The seafood is all really fresh. Japonais' food is served family-style, so order entrees to share. I personally recommend The Rock appetizer (slices of steak that you personally cook to perfection on a steaming rock). A must-try place!

This place was a TREMENDOUS disappointment. The food was the equivalent of my local lunch bento box, but because of the prices, we will not be eating out for quite a while now. The food was simply OK, and so was the decor. Our biggest problem was the mesquitos. Yes, we were eating INDOORS and after we were RUDELY disregarded by some snooty wannabe sommelier so we were forced to complain to the manager. His response was that we should have thought about using some bug spray and not eat out this time of year (even though we were INDOORS!!!!!!!!!!!!). His compensation was to give us a a glass of turpentine that he claimed was sake and that was that. Please... take heed and unless you are on your way to a safari in Africa and are already vaccinated for malaria and the such, stay the heck away from this over-rated mosquito hell hole....

It seems like everyone in Chicago had been to Japanois before me, so I had to give it a try! I walked in expecting to hate it for being such a scene, but I was actually pleasantly surprised. It is a bit loud and seatng is cramped. But the food was quite good and not unreasonably priced (for a nice restaurant)....

I have been to Japanois four times since they opened. It is a see or been seen kind of place where everyone is to cool for school. Too loud for my taste. The food is good but not great. The only dish that stands out in my mind is the hot stone with steak tar tar where you sizzle your own meat dish. Pretty cool, but ultimately a gimmick. The sushi is good, but if you really want sushi go to Kaze, or Coast.

If you are young and hip, or old and want to feel hip or generally on the prowl or like to watch people on the prowl, than by all means pay the premium and been seen.
