Meri says "Where was Quality Control?" about Hunt's Petite Diced Tomatoes

I've used Hunt's Petite Diced Tomatoes in the past with no problem until yesterday. I was making a big batch of chili and bought two brands of petite diced tomatoes for comparison- Hunt's brand [at $2.49] and the store brand [at 95 cents].

I had fried the meats and onions, added the spices and added the first can of tomatoes. I immediately saw several chunks of yellow-green and noticed little black spots on some. Many had peelings still attached. I started stirring and found more. It took me quite a while to fish all of the bad pieces out and as I did so I thought, "That's what you get for buying the store brand, Meri." I was finally satisfied that I'd gotten the chili back on track and went to add the second can. It was then I noticed that I had reached for the store brand. The first can was the Hunt's Brand! I couldn't believe it.

The store brand tomatoes were beautiful. I found one tiny piece of peeling and that was that. The tomatoes were red, there were no garbage......

CyndiA says "Hunt's Petite Diced Tomatoes cut down cooking time. " about Hunt's Petite Diced Tomatoes

I cook a lot of dishes with tomatoes as part of the base. Think of foods like spaghetti, sauces and chili beans.

With home canned tomatoes or with store tomatoes that are chopped large, it takes quite a while to cook items down to the level that I consider the tomatoes mixed in well enough.

With Hunt's Petite Diced Tomatoes, I can cut quite a bit of time off. It depends on the dish, but I'd say a good example would be chili beans. With the petite cut tomatoes, I cook about 20 or 30 minutes less than with hunky tomatoes.

Dishes still cook long enough to get the full flavor, but it just doesn't take as long.

As far as the taste of the tomatoes diced petite, they are (or appear to be) fully ripe. The color is excellent. The flavor is mild but definately tomato.

Hunt's added a pop top can. I like that also. I've noticed a number of companies going with pop top. I do like that.
...
