Homeschooling is not just education, it is a lifestyle. For many, one parent gives up a career to stay home with the children to educate them and prepare them for life. Most homeschooling families are single-income families, and therefore budgets tend to be tighter. It means that the family has to be really committed to this type of life.

Why would someone choose this lifestyle? There are many reasons. For me, it started off with my son, whom is a unique learner. I was told by the head of special education in our school district that 1) she didn't know how to educate him and 2) he would never ever read. In one year of me taking on his education, he went from a non-reading preschool level to reading on a 4th grade level. So much for the experienced, certified, government controlled education system being better for him since they gave up on him early on and said it couldn't be done.

My youngest child had severe allergies, including life-threatening ones. The school system...
...

I am going into my second year of homeschooling my three children of very different ages, and though it took the first year to iron out all the kinks and learn how to make things run smoothly it has been well worth it. My children were in the gifted program in public school but I felt they could just do better. Now they get to advance in every subject moving at their own pace. They have never been happier and I am glad to be able to teach them using the Biblical views I believe. If you are considering it or have leaped off into yur first year and wondering what you have done, hang in there, it will get eaiser and the rewards far outweigh the problems. Problems do arise, and we just deal with them one at a time. Most areas have associations that get together and play sports, do field trips, and even compete in academic areas.
...

I honeschool my three boys for different reasons. They are all doing better at home than they were at school. We not only learn together, but we really have a lot of fun together and have all become very close. For all those who say that homeschooled chilldren are sheltered and have no friends they are stereotyping them. All the neighborhood kids hang out at our house and our kids are the only ones who are homeschooled. I know I have made the best decision for my boys..
...

I have been a homeschooling parent as well as an Instructor teaching GED students after years of public school and homeschooling and find the homeschoolers are considerably more polite, motivated, diligent and willing to learn. Even if their schooling has been remiss in some subjects, their relationships with adults is so much more engaged and attentive that they comply and eventually achieve their goals and with a much better attitude. I can't endorse homeschooling enough unless the parents are able to afford an excellent, Charistian private school. Parents who network with others to augment their deficiencies or time constraints are the most successful.
...

When I discovered last year that my 4th grader had no idea about the various states in the US, and that her teacher was more worried about texting on her cell phone and playing on the computer instead of teaching the class, I decided to homeschool. I now homeschool all of my 3 children and will do so until it's time for them to go to High School.
Homeschool gives you a chance to see what your children actually know and what they don't. You control what they learn and what they don't. You don't need a lot of money to homeschool. You will spend actually less than what you would if they went to public school. You don't have to worry about buying your children new clothes for school. You don't have to worry about your children being bullied, beat up, shot, initiated into a gang, etc. Because you are there, being a role model, a teacher, and a parent.
I know personally, that homeschool works if the parent is willing to teach and learn along with their child. My youngest who is a 1st grader could...
...

I am a Parent of a 8yr old son and a 11 yr old daughter. I feel that homeschooling our children is better then letting the schools. Do to the fact that all the schools are doing now is teaching for the state required test so the schools can look good. The give them busy work the last part of the day and then send hours of homework home for the Parents to teach them. I homeschooling both my children. And yes, they were in public schools and did very well. They were not learning what they needed to know just what the teacher were TOLD to teach to make the schools look good. No i am not a teach by trade. there are wonderful programs and books out there for Parents to use. all they do is half the day do school and the other half its play. No rushing though lunch and throwing away what they buy or We as parents send for them so that they can go play on the playground for 15 Min's. We can expose these children to other family's with the same values that we have and want our children to have.......

Before anyone puts down homeschooling, they should really look at the family and take a good hard look at public schools today. Both of our daughters have learning disabilities. They were in the public school for many years. The teachers were of little or no help to us or our daughters. We have now been homeschooling for 5 years. I am able to custom their education to each girl. Get them material that really interest them personally. If something does not work well for them, we can change curriculum so they can learn and succeed. They can go at their own pace. They have the love of learning back. There are many advantages to homeschooling that the public school cannot adapt to. Homeschooling may not be for everyone, just as the public schools are not for everyone, but for this family, it is working and the girls are learning more than they ever would have in the public school system. For example, my girls hated math. We finally found one we really liked. Math U See. Now they will do all,......

Homeschooling was first brought to my attention by my daughter's nurse. Since early childhood my daughter has had health issues that made attending public school a true hassle. When her nurse questioned had we ever considered homeschooling I immediately went to the library and checked out many books on homeschooling. I also searched the internet for anything associated with homeschooling. I thought it seemed like something interesting and maybe just what we needed to give my daughter the eduation she needed. I found a homeschooling group in my area and called them. I paid the membership fees and immediately began homeschooling. That was 6 years ago and I'm still homeschooling. I have a newborn that we're also discussing homeschooling when the time comes. There are many benefits to homeschooling, some of which are safety from as much crime, being able to vacation and still do school while away, no set times and really early mornings, being closer to family, and the list just goes on and......

Homeschooling is more than academic advancement. That happens just because it is so hard to avoid learning in the real world. School is more than academics, too. It's a place where children lose their innocence. A place where they are offered drugs, bullied, passed along year after year whether they comprehend what is being taught or not. A place where very few adults care about them. A place where kids learn that to get ahead, they have to flatter, cheat, lie, etc.

Homeschool so kids learn how to really learn. Homeschool so they don't get shot by a crazy with a gun. Homeschool so your kid isn't bullied into becoming a crazy with a gun. Homeschool because it will really show your kid that caring is okay. Homeschool for the fieldtrips. Homeschool for safety. Homeschool so that your kid can learn to read and do math. Homeschool to help them realize that peers don't matter and therefore there is no such thing as peer pressure. Homeschool so they can learn to get along with people of all ages....
...

GUNNHILD says "Homeschooling: When does parent end and educator begin?" about Homeschooling

Homeschooling is a wonderful way to educate children. It is also not the end all to educating children. The fine line that divides academic educator to parent to child can have both positive as well as negative effects. Some children do not respond well to a parent as academic educator. When does the parent end and educator begin? It is not only the children who find the lines blurred. Parents can have difficulty shifting the boundaries of acceptable parental limitations and educator parameters. Homeschooling is not a fit for everyone and should never be thought of as the only method acceptable in the education of children....

jolocol says "Dedication is everything" about Homeschooling

Homeschooling is a fantastic way for children to learn beyond the confines of the classroom. It can be safer than many public and some private school programs. Being an educator, I have worked with children who have come from homeschool situations. Hence my sentence, dedication is everything. If parents take the job of education seriously and have competent skills (not education, skills) the children can learn well. However, I have had students who had no comprehension in the third grade and lacked the basic math skills because the parent didn't know what to do, was working outside the home and had a lot of work that had to be accomplished each day. On the other hand, I have worked with students who had a dedicated program, a time established that the parents seldom allowed to be interrupted and they took their work very seriously. The children flourished. If you are considering homeschooling, look seriously at your lifestyle and truly determine which of these parents you......

There is no one best way to educate children. Every child is different, and has different needs, learns differently, views the world differently. But school isn't just about learning a particular collection of knowledge or a set of skills. Business people in the marketplace say that we can't teach kids what they need to know to do the jobs they will eventually get in the future because those jobs don't even exist yet. What they need us to teach them is how to be a team player, how to see the world as a global society, how to get along well with others, how to understand that people from other cultures see things differently than we do and not only is that ok - we need to market to that difference and so on. You can not learn those things in isolation. Even home schools that are collections of a few families are not microcosms of society. When students arrive at my high school after having spent their early years in a home school setting - they may read well, they may be very intelligent...
...

I know for a fact that home schooling in general is horrible for children for a variety of reasons and an online program would be even worse. The academics of an online course are not challenging at all and are not worth your money. Take my advice: if you want your child to get a good education, send them to private school!...

I think home school is good for students who have a structured academic as well as social program. Home schooling takes away many distractions and allows the child to focus better. Also there is no knowledge gap and the student can learn at his/her own pace. That sudent does not have to be slowed by other or left behind for that matter....
