favoriteaunt says "Homescan is time consuming" about Homescan

I have been a Homescan member for the past six months. My friends introduced me to it and said it was a great thing to belong to. I have to agree with them with most items. The problem is that most of the stores I shop at are not on the scanner and then I have to figure out what store they should be filed under. Since I only grocery shop every three weeks it takes me hours to put in the shopping items with all the coupons and sales that I have used. I think it is a great idea but it needs to be a little more consumer friendly

rbdew1 says "worthless" about Homescan

This was the most worthless program I ever joined. Most of the information I scanned was not received. The people were rude and hateful. After I filled out one of the polls asking political questions my particapation was terminated without warning. I was not allowed to redeem my points, and I was cotinueously harrased.
...

I'm with Homescan over a year amd I enjoy answering surveys as well as doing my weekly transmission. My scanner stopped working and I notified support team, I returned broken scanner and in 5 days got new one. I even used some points to get myself a Christmas present. Yes I was on waiting list, but it was worth the wait! I would recommend, I'm very happy and customer service is nice. They even have bonus points like when it's your birthday and anniversary date when you joined Homescan....

I decided to sign up to be a member of Homescan and was accepted about a year and a half ago. When I originally signed up, I was put on a waiting list. Apparently, they need a particular mix of people of various backgrounds and family sizes.

ADVANTAGES:

Homescan is a program in which Nielson can track spending trends. Members scan any products they purchase with a hand-held scanner and transmit the data over the computer. In exchange for this effort, members receive points that can be used to purchase gifts in an online catalogue. Those who scan and transmit on a regular basis are also entered into sweepstakes to earn cash. After certain anniversaries (6 months, 1 year, etc.), additional points are awarded. One other advantage of the program is that your shopping habits become more recognized by retailers. For example, we buy a lot of gluten free and soy products. I hope that mainstream retailers in turn will begin to stock more of the products that we currently buy at specialty grocers...
...

Scanning fo Homescan can sometimes be a nuisance, but I've noticed I've become more aware of what I pay for products and when prices increase. It also takes a REALLY long time to get enough points for the "good" prizes, but they are very nice prizes. I like having my opinion count and there are lots of surveys to take on many different types of products for even more points. All in all, I think it's worth my time, but anyone interested needs to be aware of the time (10-15 minutes on a big grocery trip) and commitment needed (you're supposed to scan EVERYTHING, even gas!) that goes along with being a panelist.
...

Eric01 says "This sucks" about Homescan

I signed up for Homescan about three months ago. Since then, I've been asciduously scanning in virtually everything we've purchased.

Then, today, scanning in a large grocery shopping trip, using their reference cards for the vegetables, and spending about an hour doing it, I got to thinking "why the hell am I doing this for them without adequate compensation?" These suckers are not even paying minimum wage.

AC Nielsen and its subsidiary HomeScan are large, for profit corporations. They sell their research findings to high-paying clients, but they're using essentially slave-labor for the basis of their research. Every time we scan in a shopping trip, we are "rewarded" with points that equal mills on the dollar in terms of the "gifts" that are offered as incentive. I think we're also entered into some mysterious sweepstakes (what are the chances of winning that? yeah, right). Bottom line, unless you want to donate your time to a for-profit corporation, it's not worth it.

If they......

I learned about Homescan on Viewpoints and while reading the reviews I thought I would give it a try and signed up. I am very pleased.

Homescan is a Nielsen's consumer panel program that helps make your voice heard in the market world. All you do is scan the products you normally purchase with the nifty scanner they send you (see pictures), put in the store you shopped at and purchase price for each product and when you are complete you are also entering if you used a savings card or what knots (the scanner asks the questions), after that just transmit once a week and watch the points build up to use for the selection of great gifts they offer. I was surprised at what I can get. Computer items, kitchen items, stuff for the kids, home, camping etc...I ordered my first gift and it said I would be waiting 4 to 6 weeks. It came in three days.

Some of the point amounts needed for some of the products I thought at first would take me forever to save up for, but I forgot...
...

About Homescan:

I was completing surveys for cash on-line for over a year when I was contacted by Homescan and invited to become a home scanner. The company representative explained all the details to me and I decided to join.

The Pros:

I was sent a bar-code scanner, a welcome notebook, a sheet of bar-codes for items that won't scan, USB cable that is capable with all computers and support documentation. You get to purchase the items you would normally purchase, scan the items and transmit the report weekly to earn points. I am earning 225 points each week for transmitting my purchases.

You can also complete surveys to earn extra points and often your entire family is invited. This great because each person that completes the survey adds points to your account. Surveys usually earn 200-300 points per survey. The more you transmit the more chances you have to win prizes in addition to your points. I enjoy shopping and this is a fun way to earn free things for my household. I usually save...
...

I'd been with them for several years with no problems whatsoever. Then, we signed up for a little beeper type thing they wanted us to wear and everything became unbelievable!

Before the beeper type thingys, the points didn't add up fast anyway, but our children enjoyed scanning the items and I thought our voice was being heard.

The first problem with the beeper type thingys, was the fact that one of our children is homeschooled and they had a problem with his not going outside the home.

The second problem was that our daughter was not allowed to wear the item at school.

Their solution was to just take the beepers away from them, even though they were aware of the childrens schedules to begin with.

They then stated they were sending boxes for their equipment to be returned, the boxes never came, yet we began receiving vicious hate calls from them stating they were going to sue our children!

This of course, prompted me to tell them......

This is a great way to earn points redeemable for gifts. You're sent a barcode scanner and you scan every thing you buy. You can an item, enter how many you've purchased, the price you paid, at the end you enter the total amount spent on that shopping trip. If you shop at store like Jewel, and use their preferred card, then you don't have to enter the prices.

Each week you transmit your data back to AC Nielson, and you earn points, each week, if you transmit. Your point level is determined by how long you've been with them. Right now, I get 225 points for every week that I transmit data.

There are also surveys (very short ones) where you can earn anywhere from 200 to 300 points.

When you're ready to redeem your points for merchandise - they have a great selection. I'm letting my points grow and grow.

If you're interested, go to www.homescan.com and sign up. You may not be automatically selected, but they may put you on the waiting list based on your demographic information....
...

MacGyver says "An A C Neilsen Company" about Homescan

Homescan is a great service to the nation by letting manufacturers know who is buying their products, for how much, and how often.

They send you a scanner, charts for store IDs, places to scan for on vacation, ill, need a break, etc.

You shop, return home and unpack scanning everything you bought with store ID first, then all the UPC codes off the items. You may be asked prices on products. Stores like Sears have their own codes on pricetags, so you scan off a card for apparel then add the price.

Remember even treats, they want to know the store, the UPC off it & the price. Then you send the info weekly via a USB cord they send to you that attaches to the scanner.

Yes, these are the Neilsens who have folks watching TV for them. NOT US!
...
