Bryan-Carey says "Elefun: Good Concept, but a Flawed Product" about Hasbro Elefun - The Butterfly Catchin' Game

Kids love games of any sort. Mine little girls have several games they count among their favorites and a few others they like, but with slight reservations. One game that fits into the latter category is Elefun, a butterfly catching game from Hasbro.

Game Commentary:

Elefun is a motor- operated game that features a plastic base shaped like an elephant. This elephant has a long, four- foot vinyl trunk that contains dozens of small "butterflies". These insects are vinyl in construction and are shaped like a bowtie. They come in several colors like green, yellow, red, and orange.

To play Elefun, two to four players are required. Each player takes a small net and stands next to Elefun. The small butterflies are placed in the base, the trunk is attached, and the motor is activated. As the motor runs, air is blown through the trunk, causing it to expand and release the 30 small butterflies. The player who catches the most butterflies with their net is the winner.

Elefun is a simple enough game...
...

I enjoy playing games with the kids. Yes, they are young, but we try to find games we all can enjoy, and I purchased Hasbro Elefun - The Butterfly Catchin' Game thinking that it could be fun for the whole family. I was wrong, well sort of. . .

Hasbro Elefun - The Butterfly Catchin' Game was first of all easy to set up, but also a pain. The box says 1.5v batteries, but it doesn't say if they are AA or C. So of course I come home try to use AA and it needs C. So, here I am with two little girls jumping up and down in glee wanting to play and not understanding why mommy bought the wrong batteries even when I explained for the 153rd time why we can't play the game tonight.

The next day it's off to the store for C batteries and of course first thing when we get home, "Can we play now mommy, you have the right badderies!" Game is started and it seems a quick run through, but the girls are squealing in delight. Just like any new toys they want to play over and over again day after...
...

My nephew got Elefun for his birthday this year and we opened it up right away. Although the game says it's for 3-5 (or was it 4-6?), my 2 year old nephew loved it! Granted, he was on a sugar high from the cake and ice cream, but even so he had a lot of fun with it.

Elefun is a Butterfly Catching Game. Basically, the elephant sticks his trunk up in the air, and you turn on a little fan that blows the butterflies out the top. The butterflies are made of little paper/plasticy things that sort of float down. The goal is for kids to catch as many as they can! It's meant to be played with others, but my nephew is perfectly fine just playing it himself.

The first few times he played, we had to keep telling him to get closer. He doesn't really have the hand-eye coordination yet, but why not give him a head start on learning this? But even when he didn't catch any at all (which was most every time in the beginning) he still wanted to play over and over. We helped him catch some...
...

I really cannot say anything good about this product. First it was very difficult for my daughter to get the trunk off to load the butterfly pieces. When we started the game it wouldn't work then I noticed there is a piece on the bottom that must be pushed in to allow game play so it wouldn't work on our carpeted floor. I actually had to put it on top of a book so it would work. Finally we got it to work only to be sorely dissapointed in the game. I thought that the butterflies would com out of the course of several minutes however, they all came shooting out in about 30 seconds. So after reloading the game half a dozen times in just a few minutes my daughter was bored and frustrated and so was I. The game has never been played since and has found it's way to goodwill. I would not recommend this game to a friend or even a stranger. This is probably the worst game I have ever purchased.
...

I dont have a ton to say about this elefun that anyone else hasnt said. It is not something a 3 year old can play alone b/c it takes constant re-assembly. The butterflies are done flying out of the elephants nose in no time and then you have to put them back in. the top is not easy for little hands to take off.

I definately thought the price was way too high for the game.
...

We bought Elefun for our 3 year old. She immediately loved it! You put butterflies in an elefants trunk and it blows them out and you need to catch them in your net. This game can be played alone or with up to 4 players.

Sometimes my friend comes over and we play with my daughter...and we start to make up "adult" rules where we have to stay on our knees and can't do this or that...very silly! Makes it fun for even us to play.

Recently my 3 young cousins came to stay with me and the 10 and 6 year olds even got a kick out of this game, making up similar stay on your knees kind of rules.

Cons: Not all the butterflies come out. The batteries drain really quickly and you need 4 or 6 C batteries. The lid is really hard to remove even for me.
...

My 3 yr old got this for his 3rd birthday and we (mom & dad) included have been playing it everyday. Very easy setup, very easy to play. Mom and dad have to sit on the floor while my son can stand and try to get the butterflys. There were a couple times the last one or two butterflys wouldn't come out but excellant game and makes my son laugh everytime we play....

I bought this game because it looks like soooo much fun on TV. What they failed to tell you is it takes maybe 15-20 seconds to get all of the "butterflies" out. So then you have to constantly put the butterflies back in, which requires you to open up the trunk part. A young child wouldn't be able to play with this by themselves because of that.

This is basically good for a playdate and that's about it. I don't recommend it.
...

Elefun
by
Milton Bradley

What is it?
Elefun is a game for kids where there is a Elephant face and a long elephant nose. Turn the power on and 30 little butterflies fly out of the nose and the kids catch them in their nets. The one with the most butterflies in their net wins!

Recommended Ages: 3-6 years old
Players: 2 to 4
Batteries: Requires 4 "C" Batteries

My Viewpoint!
Elefun is fun for the whole family. Of course, Mom and Dad have to play on their knees to be fair, but it's still fun. It's a game that has the kids up and moving and it's fast. The one downfall that I do have is that the elephant has to sit on a hard surface to work. It doesn't work on carpet. The nets are cheaply made, so don't tug on them too hard..they are flimsy. All in all, this game is fun!
...

My son received this as a gift from his Godmother when she came out to visit us a couple of weeks ago. By her second day here she started hiding it on the top shelf of a closet so she wouldn't have to play it 100 times a day. It's a very cute game that gets kids up and moving trying to catch paper butterflies that shoot out of the elephant's trunk, with little butterfly nets. The only real complaint I have is that it doesn't come with enough butterflies, the game is over really, really quickly. But on the flip side, that's not such a bad thing, because the kids love putting the butterflies into the elephant almost as much as catching them. Oh, and make sure you stock up on batteries for this one, it takes 4 'C' batteries, and at the rate my son plays it, those batteries don't last long. ...

I do not like the holiday season because there are way too many toy commercials on television. I guess next season I will just have to leave the TV off during November and December. One day my daughter was watching cartoons and she saw a commercial for the Elephun game. I had already heard of the game, but I had never bought it for her because I thought she would be too little to play.

Boy was I incorrect. We went to the store and since we were working on her doing chores at home, she was good therfore we went to buy it. I was distracted at the store and when I got home I realized that I needed four "C" batteries for the game, so we had to go back and pick them up.

Assembly was a bit too much for my liking. I am a huge fan of simple games where you open the box and go. You have to put together the nets, and assemble the elephant. The worst part of it is that after the butterflies fly out, you have to take the trunk out each time they want to play...
...
