Fardreamer says "Groundhog Day is a mind-bendingly funny rom-com classic!" about Groundhog Day

I first saw Groundhog Day during its theatrical run in 1993; it was my birthday - or close to it - and because it was my 30th, my friends Betsy, Richard and David decided to invite me to a Dinner and Movie Friends' Night Out.

Because we had started watching Saturday Night Live in junior high school, we were already familiar with the movie's lead actor, Bill Murray. David, the lone golfer in our quartet, had loved Caddyshack, while all of us had seen and thoroughly enjoyed Stripes and Ghostbusters, which had been pretty successful vehicles for the SNL alum and Groundhog Day's director, Harold Ramis.

For some reason, I had not read or seen any review of Groundhog Day before we all chose to see it; I usually like to read a professional film reviewer's opinion or watch shows such as At The Movies or the now-gone Roeper and Ebert, but in this case I was going into cinematic "terra incognita."

Phil: What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and...
...

bkovacs says "A great romantic comedy with a message" about Groundhog Day

How can you not like a romantic comedy with a time loop and a groundhog that drives? Groundhog Day is on my short list of the best romantic comedies of all time. If you haven't seen it, plan to rent it -- it's a terrific date movie and it's really fine for the whole family.

A Pittsburgh TV crew heads to Punxsutawney, Pennslyvania, to record the annual Groundhog Day festivities. On the team is the insufferable Phil (Bill Murray), a jaded and critical weatherman who enjoys showing everyone how smart he is. Also on the team is Rita (Andie MacDowell), a sweet and attractive producer, and Larry (Chris Eliott), a droll cameraman. Phil spends the night before Groundhog Day in a bed & breakfast, and delivers a string of put-downs as he heads out the door to do the TV shoot. Once the shoot is over, the crew heads back to Pittsburgh but is turned back by a surprise snowstorm. The next thing Phil knows, he is waking up in the morning and it is Groundhog Day all over again.

In fact, it is Groundhog...
...

garbi01 says "A definite comedy classic" about Groundhog Day

Until last weekend, I'd never seen Groundhog Day. I'd also seen hardly any of it on television. But of course I knew what it was about. The film has its own place in pop culture and is always included in a discussion of great comedy films. Groundhog Day, featuring Bill Murray in his prime, is about Phil Connors, a cocky arrogant weatherman, that travels to watch the yearly ritual of the groundhog, his shadow, and the coming of spring. Phil brings along his photographer, Larry (Chris Elliot), and his producer Rita (Andie McDowell). They are both subject to Phil's selfish actions throughout the day.

Then, Phil wakes up to the same music as the day before. He soon realizes everything is the same. He is reliving Groundhog Day again. By now, even if you've never seen the movie, you know what the plot is. Yet, you are in for a great surprise. Phil relives Groundhog Day hundreds of times, and each time, Rita, Larry and the townspeople are living the day as if it is their first.

Phil goes through...
...

MarkJ says "After "What About Bob" my favorite Bill Murray movie!" about Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is much more than a light-hearted comedy and Bill Murray, who is a master of understatement, plays the part perfectly. The screenplay should have at least been nominated for an award. It is a movie that can be watched over and over just as Phil Connors relives Groundhog Day....

vivasuzi says "Seems to be more of a movie for My Generation" about Groundhog Day

A weather man (Bill Murray) visits Punxsutawney, Penn. for the yearly celebration of groundhog day. This is his 5th year here, so he pretty much knows what to expect and is very reluctant to go to this event in this boring town. This day begins as any other for Bill, but it ends quite oddly. Every time he goes to sleep, he wakes up to February 2nd, Groundhog Day. Will this nightmare ever end?? Will Bill be stuck living the same day over and over for the rest of his life?? If you want to know, I guess you'll have to rent it!

Now for why I liked this movie...
First of all Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, and Chris Elliott are 3 great actors. They all star in this movie as the weather man and crew. Bill knows the day is repeating itself, but the other two, as well as everyone in town, have no idea that they have done this before. Once Bill realizes what is going on, he starts to do many things each day since he already knows what people plan to do each minute of the day. I don't want to ruin any...
...

The first time I saw this movie I just thought it was funny, but odd. Then I would catch myself watching it when it was on cable channels on tv. After a few times of watching it, I got hooked as a fan. It was one of those oddball comedic movies with a life lesson.

I laughed at the groundhog, cried when he figured out he had to get something done right for the day not to repeat itself over and over. It touched my heart when he tried helping the old man who was dying. He tried over and over to get to this guy sooner and help me in many different ways.

Even after you figure it out, it is fun to watch it again and again and again and .....

...

Want a fail-proof 2 hours of fun?
Watch Groundhog Day - with friends, family, a first date, or an old love.

Oops, I Did it Again
BAsic Premise: Bill Murray gets caught in a time warp, where he keeps repeating one day, over and over again, until he gets it "right." The viewing audience gets total pleasure from anticipating what's coming next, as we start to remember the order of the day's events. Murray is hilarious, and Andie MacDowell is unfailingly magnetic, as always.

The Bottom Line: Libby Loves It!

...
