Preaching screenwriter here:

Just tried to upgrade from AVG 7.5 to 8.0...big mistake! Firewall will not load properly after numerous attempts. All I get is a never ending error message while the tormenting flames of computer hell scorch my tortured soul as legions of nightmarish viral imps mock and taunt me for my impetuous foray into cyber territories unkown. Oh that I would have heeded the clarion calls from those who are forever ensconced in the fiery depths of cyber hell....delete!!! delete!!! before it is too late!

Alas, I fear all is lost. Someone, somewhere entreat the God of all cyberspace on my behalf to have mercy on my tortured cyber soul.

Blessings,

Preaching screenwriter
...

AVG 7.5 worked well while I had it. When "upgraded" to version 8.0 (as encouraged by the AVG people) the program completely broke down. AVG support did not respond to requests for help and I was left with no antivirus program. Avoid Grisoft and its AVG products....

I loaded this program for free when I discovered a virus had made its way onto my computer despite my having EZ Firewall protection. It downloaded pretty quickly and easily and took care of the virus issue pretty quickly. I couldn't have asked for a better result or a better price.

The downsides are that it takes up a lot of memory, it takes more time to start up my computer and the daily updates are pretty time consuming. But the positives far outweigh the negatives.
...

I like anyhting that is free, especially software. AVG finds bugs at once and keeps my sytem clean and free. I'm just like you. No special training, no computer classes, just the average Joe looking to make sure that their computer works without spending tons of money or time on the process. - AVG free enables me to do all that, without all the confusing extras that cause your computer to suddenly do something unexpected. Before I used AVG I was constantly having to turn off my security program to install software. AVG in no way interferes with the normal operation of your computer....

AVG Anti-Virus 7.5 discovered viruses that my $2100+ Trend Micro Anti-Virus didn't discover. I confirmed the viruses with other packages, but our expensive Trend Micro SMB AV didn't find.

You can even use the AVG AV Free Edition but it is less configurable so you do get the extras by paying for the commerical versions.

Try it against the other AV Companies before you pay to much for "assumed" protection.

Download the free edition and test it: grissoft.com
...

I was introduced to this software by a very good friend and since downloading and using it, have been recommending it to others. It is very easy to use, understand and download. If i had more than two thumbs, I would have given it all my many thumbs up. Excellent software and definitely a must-have....

Before I used AVG I was constantly having to turn off my security program to install software. AVG in no way interferes with the normal operation of your computer. What's even better, when it updates, its a quick 30 sec process at start up, and then you are done. You decide when to, or not to, schedule virus scans. If something does happen, say you download a file and a virus gets on your computer, WHAM, AVG is on top of the matter, either healing or confining the virus in a virus vault.

AVG is dependable, trustworthy, and best of all, FREE. If you like the product that much but you need more, there is an edition that offers more that you can purchase. At least you get the opportunity...
...

c3ajeff says "Why pay for an anti-virus solution when you can get it for free?" about Grisoft AVG Free Edition 7.5

Why buy an anti-virus solution for your home computer when an excellent solution is available for free? Yes indeed, there is such a thing as a free lunch (in this case anyway!)

AVG Free Edition works. It does it's job. I am a computer consultant and I have installed this software on literally hundreds of home computers. Many of my professional clients who have AVG Free at home liked it so much that they purchased the rather reasonably-priced professional editions for their offices and servers.

I have never had a problem with AVG. I can't say that for other anti-virus software. In fact I have had SO many problems with the likes of Norton and McAfee that I always advise my clients to remove them and install AVG.

I have absolutely no affiliation with AVG - I do not profit from it's use or sale of it's professional products.
...
