bkovacs says "'Gran Torino' is a great ride" about Gran Torino

I think most reviewers get one point wrong about Walt Kowalski, Clint Eastwood's character in Gran Torino. Everyone remarks that Walt is a racist, and he certainly uses strong language that we associate with racial intolerance. However, Walt is more of a "timist" than anything -- his beef is not with the race of the people around him, but the time in which he is living. Walt would prefer to turn back the clock to a time when everything made sense and his beloved 1972 Ford Gran Torino ruled the streets with gas-gulping muscle.

Walt lives in Detroit, in a neighborhood that has just about completely gone ethnic. Gran Torino opens with Walt at his wife's funeral, while the extended Hmung family next door celebrates the birth of a child. Walt fights the changes of time with a string of obscenities and slurs that are actually... well, funny. When Thao (Bee Vang), the timid Hmung teen next door, tries to steal the Gran Torino as part of a gang initiation, Walt stops him with his Korean War...
...

GRAN TORINO

GRAN TORINO Widescreen Edition was a movie which I borrowed this weekend to view with my husband after the children went to bed. I have 5 children. Obviously, 8 year old Aimee watching was never an option. I have a 22 yr old son who will eventually. My 18 yr old has too much college "stuff' going on period. My 17 yr old will another day and my 15 year old will in maybe a year.

We live in a very racial area and my children are half Pennsylvania Dutch and half Mexican. I was more worried that my Mexican husband would lose his love for Clint Eastwood than anything else. I knew he was portraying a predjudiced man before borrowing this movie. I disagree with others who say it was so so. He showed an older man who was predjudiced grew to care more for someone he once despised than his own offspring. Clint pulled his lines. It was not an action movie for him so much as an acting movie for him.

Walt Kowalski Clint's character) was widowed and from the first told the young...
...

Gran Torino had to be Eastwood's worst movie ever. The acting was terrible except for the dog. One stupid cliche after another. A waste of time. It was even named after a crappy car.
...

Clint Eastwood did it again. Always a great actor and, in this case, a great director as well. In my opinion, Gran Torino was of Academy Award quality. Clint revealed his usual trademark personalities, and at the same time showed that he could reach out to other less unfortanate individuals with sympathetic and caring abandonment.

It's one of those movies that seems to end to soon.
...

I rented this DVD, Gran Torino, not expecting to like it, which is probably one of the reasons why I did like it so much. It had a great story and I found it very amusing as well. It will even probably make my "top" list. It is not maybe the BEST movie I have ever seen, but it would come close. The characters were interesting, the story flowed nicely and I don't know what else to say. Clint Eastwoods character was, to me, very funny as he reminded me of my own elderly family members; however, he was offensive, so be prepared for that. He was very mean and racist, but it was all part of the growth of his character and I really liked it a lot. The movie, I think, accurately portrays the opinions and attitudes of some of the people in this world that are in that age group and have had those experiences (like war veteran) and I really like and agree with how people can be won over to new opinions and viewpoints if they would just get to know each other.
...

Gran Torino looked like a guy movie my husband bought it and I was hooked after few minutes of viewing keeps you watching never seen Clint Eastwood like this but he does good.

It did have language we would not use, alot was hard to hear being said to people on the movie but its things I have heard people use to others out on the streets.

This is a movie we have watched over several times and had family over to watch with us also and loaned the movie out.

So much bigotry language but approperate to get the story told had sad ending but at same time good ending. Made you realize people can change.
...

kargirl says "Gran Torino is the best money I have spent going to the movies." about Gran Torino

I don't go to the movies very often (usually wait for the DVD to come out) but since I've always been a Clint Eastwood fan I made an exception and saw Gran Torino in the theater. I was definitely not disappointed. The story is so involving that the time just flew by. Even my husband, who usually has a very short attention span, was completely into the movie. The characters are well defined, human and realistic and the storyline is logical and easy to follow. I think Eastwood is at his best in this movie. He gives a great performance that is multi-dimensional.

What I especially liked about the movie was the mix of humor, drama and great storytelling. I found myself involved in the lives of all the main characters. I even learned some things about the Hmong people. I think this is a great movie for anyone age 13 and up. It could also be useful as a discussion topic for parents and teens However, due to rough language, some violence and a lot of racial slurs, it would...
...

With the rave reviews of Gran Torino and the fact that many friends loved this movie, I guess I was expecting more. Yes, the message was a good one, but really - did I need to hear the "F" word and so much other profanity so many times that I wanted to get up and walk out!! Wish I had. Couldn't believe that so many people loved it for the message. Can't we get those messages of prejudice across in another way. I'm not a prude and have seen many other great movies minus the language that didn't make me cringe whenever I knew it was coming again and again. I was a little embarrassed at first when people would ask me how I liked it, but then decided I needed to express why I didn't! Great movies in my book are movies like Ghandi or A Beautiful Mind. What have we come to when we rate movies such as this four stars, or rave about them. Bring on the real messages in movies, not just what we think the public wants to see and hear.
...

I had seen previews for this movie and to me it did not really look too interesting at first. I went to a friends and watch it and thought it was awesome!!! I liked the whole story line. Nothing ever bored me in the movie. The only thing is, is that I thought the ending was very sad. Clint Eastwood played an amazing role as a racest whose gone soft on the neighbors next door whom at first you would never think he would. I'm telling you, for someone who isn't the biggest Clint Eastwood fan, I feel that he nailed it in this movie. When I was done watching the movie I immediatly called my mom b/c she is a huge movie buff as well as a Clint Eastwood fan. I couldn't stop raving about the movie to her. She was telling me that she was waiting for it to come in the mail. My mom called me right after she watched the movie and told me how much she loved that movie too. The movie has great acting, great directing. The story line I felt was extremely powerful and I couldn't...
...

Clint Eastwood is oscar worthy in his role as a racist old man who learns to love.

Eastwood playes a disgruntled Korean War vet Walt Kowalski sets out to reform his neighbor, a young Hmong teenager, who tried to steal Kowalski's prized possession: his 1972 Gran Torino. Without giving a way too many spoilers I will just say that Clints acting and directing has never been better. If it wasnt for him , this movie would not be anywhere near as good as it is. Almost everything about it is amazing. The only con is some of the foriegners who are acting in the film come of as very stiff. Almost like they are reading their lnes off a teleprompter. Other than that, this film is a fantastic story of a man who learns to love.
...

"Gran Torino" is the best movie of the year! Its funny, heartwarming, sad and suspenseful all wrapped into one. Clint Eastwood did an outstanding performance as an elderly, "old school", veteran, whose militarist habits have alienated him from his family. He makes his opinions and comments well known to everyone regardless how politically incorrect they may be. He comes across as a gruff, prejudice, athiest, who through his "enemy" neighbors, realizes he is no different from them. This is a must see. Clint is a classic and this is just one more great movie to add to his accomplishments!
...

Utterly brilliant and captivating film featuring (supposedly in his last acting film)Clint Eastwood.Mr.Eastwood has always been known as a hard as nails man portraying hard as nails characters. In this film,he is,as well as hard as nails, vulnerable, sympathetic, and hearbreaking. He does a little Dirty Harry in this film-but a more subdued and much older version.Truly amazing film that should've earned him atleast an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
...

My husband was pretty excited to see the latest Clint Eastwood movie so I agreed to watch it with him. I don't think that Gran Torino was quite up to Clint Eastwood's usual stuff. I thought there was entirely too much racism period. The movie was ok, I wouldn't say it was bad... it was just ok. Ol' Dirty Harry was too soft towards the end. He was rough and tough at the beginning but suddenly turned into a big softie once he knew he was dying. The ending was a bit of a surprise, but I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen the movie yet.
...
