Teddy4922 says "5 years old and never an issue. Great furnace!" about Goodman GMH95 gas furnace high (95%) efficiency

I agree the installation is key. Our contractor that installed our Goodman GMH95 assured us it would perform flawlessly if installed properly, and he was right. In five years, other than our annual scheduled maintenance, we have not had to call him out for any problems at all. The furnace heats our home efficiently and superbly comfortably. We couldn't be more pleased.

By the way, one of our neighbors had the same furnace installed by another contractor who was the lowest bidder. They had several issues with the furnace, and the installing contractor went out of business within a year. Turns out they weren't even licensed and never even obtained the required permit for the installation. The furnace wasn't installed correctly, which caused the problems in the first place. Well, the contractor WE hired corrected the installation mistakes the other company had made, and their furnace has worked just fine ever since.

Just goes to show you that the old cliche "you get what you pay for" is...
...

CJthefixer says "Right contractor is more important than the brand of furnace." about Goodman GMH95 gas furnace high (95%) efficiency

I am currently having my heating system replaced. So here is my story. I have a 19 year old Lennox Pulse system that pretty much bit the dust. While attempting to do an operational check to get ready for those long cold winter nights in upstate NY, the system decided to just chatter and never came online. After extensively exhausting my engineering and electrical background, I finally broke down and called a service repairman.

First words of wisdom! Find someone locally that you know or someone you trust knows. ASK! Don't finger tab through the yellow pages. Check them out with the Better Business Bureau. It is even better if they have prior experience with your unit. A contractor insuring a quality intallation is more important than the brand of furnace!

For my dilemma, I just recently purchased the house and all the inspector did was check the unit for operation, no foresight into potential problems with age of the furnace. Seems all units are built for an average life of 12-14 years....
...

sandysch says "Wouldn't trust a Goodman furnace ever again!!!!!" about Goodman GMH95 gas furnace high (95%) efficiency

We switched from oil to natural gas in 1996 and the contractor told us that the Goodman high efficiency was a great furnace. They sold them to several homes that were switching over in our town. Within the first year, the furnace was breaking down during the coldest months. There was a hose that would trap water and cause the furnace to kick off, usually during the night. We would have to go to the furnace and blow the water out of the tube and the furnace would start back up. By December 1999, we had to replace the heat exchanger as it was on recall due to it cracking. It broke down on New Year's Eve and because of the crack, the gas company had to shut down the furnace for a week until the new exchanger was replaced. We had to use micro furnaces to heat the house to prevent the pipes from freezing. Every year after, during the coldest months, we had to have the furnace serviced for different parts that broke down. We spent more time and money repairing it than we...
...

nextwave says "Fair but Advise to Consider Others" about Goodman GMH95 gas furnace high (95%) efficiency

I would agree that the contractor is just as if not more important that the brand selected. The concern with the Goodman brand is that it tends to be available for sale to just about anyone. Accordingly, less skilled (and often less honest/reputable) contractors tend to offer this brand as they don't have to comply with the standards of some better known brands. Historically we have not been happy with the performance of Goodman (aka Amana, Janitrol) but every brand has a blemish in its history. We still find their units to contain fewer features than competing brands. Regardless of the brand you select please be sure to change those filters on a regular basis!!!...

Furnace Reviews

Finding an honest furnace or air conditioner review is hard because everyone is biased in one way or another. I decided to write this furnace review to give my opinion with facts that I have accumulated over the years.
I have been repairing and installing furnaces and air conditioners for 21 years so I have a good amount of experience in the subject.
I have found that furnaces have evolved over the years to a point now where the manufacturers are offering a high quality product that will last many years. When high efficiency furnaces first came out, each manufacturer had its own idea on how to build a furnace and by trial and error they slowly worked out the problems to where now they are all are building a good furnace.
The furnace manufacturers actually just build the heat exchanger, cabinet, housings etc. They buy the circuit boards, motors, burners, controls, limit switches, draft inducers, pressure controls, gas valves, ignition controls, and hot surface igniters...

...

This furnace was an emergency replacement for a very old low efficiency gas furnace. It was installed 3 months ago. We've been warm & cozy ever since, no complaints. We're quite pleased with the savings on our gas bill & feel very good about our envirnmentally sound choice....
