johnny12 says "Performance and design of dehumidifier wheels:" about GoldStar GHD Dehumidifier

A typical dehumidifier wheel system is shown in Figure 1. In this system, there are two flow streams--supply air and regeneration air. As the dehumidifier wheel rotates, the water molecules are removed from the supply air and transferred to the regeneration air. Adjacent to this dehumidifying device is a heating device to heat the regenerator inlet air to a temperature much higher than the supply air. This elevated temperature is necessary to regenerate the desiccant coating on the wheel matrix for dehumidification of the supply air. The heating device can be an electric or gas heater, and it may be preheated upstream by a supply of waste or solar-heated air.

Dehumidifier wheels have very different operating conditions than energy wheels, although their construction is usually similar and in some cases they are identical. Just how each wheel matrix design and desiccant coating design impact dehumidifier wheel performance is not well explained in the literature. A comprehensive...
...

I own one of these and it works Great. It keeps running and pulls water from the humid air in our basement quickly. If you have a musty smelling room, get one of these and you will be happy. The tank for the water is easy to change and you just put the machine on auto and it does the job. We have a flood in our basement when it rains a lot and this little machine really did the trick getting the air back to normal....

While it works it works really well, we have had to replace two. They both lasted about 1 1/2 years but it does work well. As far as quiet it is in our basement and so the noise is not really bothersome but there is some noise to it. It is amazing how much water it accumulates.
...

My house is very damp. The new windows installed last year at quite a bit of money are always fogged over when the weather starts to get colder. This dehumidifier did a good job of drying the air. The motor is basically silent and the water holder is easy to get to. My electric bill has not increased much, so I assume it is energy efficient....

We bought this unit for our basement at Home Depot. It worked for just under 4 months, then one day went down to empty the bucket and nothing.....never came back on. The warranty period elapsed before I had time to scream at someone at GoldStar....so we are stuck into buying another. I will let you know how the search goes, but don't buy anything from these idiots....

I bought this Goldstar DH305 at a Wal-Mart for $138.44 and my only regret is that I didn't buy it years ago and have saved a bunch of stuff from getting moldy. Sure, it's a bit noisy, but for a cellar or garage, who cares? It runs well, shuts off when it's supposed to, and I can hook a hose to it and run it to a floor drain or out under the garage door. Saves having to empty the bucket every day!...

This dehumidifier works very well. My house doesn't feel nearly as humid since we have been using it. My only complaint is that the tank is very small and we dump it twice a day. But it was $50 cheaper than the bigger one and worth the sacrifice....

This was the cheapest dehumidifier we could get at Home Depot. We have a finished basement in our small house so we thought it was good enough.

While it does the job, and frankly is powerful enough for our size house, it kicks out so much hot air that in the hot summer months, I really feel my AC has to make up for it. I figure my energy costs are twice what the dehumidifier consumes as a result.

Dehumidifiers can get expensive, so if the hot air isn't an issue, this is a decent unit to buy. It's dependable and I don't think it needs to be emptied too often.

I do wish it would shut off a little easier. It seems when I turn it on it runs until it's full. I guess our place is that humid!
...

To the Point

We had two dehumidifiers in our basement. That area tends to be damp. Over a year ago we bought a GoldStar Model Number GHD30.

A Closer View

We bought this one basically for two reasons: it was small and it was inexpensive. The cost was around $140. We wanted it small because it sits on top of a file cabinet. At 15 inches wide by about 13 inches deep and 21 inches tall this fit the bill.

When we came home from vacation our house was musty especially the basement. The GoldStar has been working day and night and it's doing a great job. It's in one finished room; the others are in the unfinished area.

It's easy to use. All that is on the unit is the speed fan which gives me two speeds, an auto shut-off light and a humidity control knob. It holds 30 pints of water which are easily emptied by removing the water bucket which is in the front of the unit. It has a handle so it's easy to carry to the downstairs bathroom. There is also a font and rear grille, an air filter, a brush, and...
...

I bought a new house in 2000 and quickly learned that the basement smelled damp and musty. The cure was a dehumidifier and I bought an inexpensive GoldStar DH3010B, a model that is now obsolete. The DH3010B worked fine for about six years, then the unit's fan seized. I fixed it without too much trouble but it seized again in a few months. Time to get a new dehumidifier. I have another dehumidifier (in another house), and it's been working fine for 15 years -- and continues to work. I thought six years was an unexpectedly short life for a dehumidifier.

I looked at several stores but the best deal was on another GoldStar model, the GHD30. This is GoldStar's bottom-of-the-line unit with the capacity to remove 30 pints of water per day. That's all I need in my basement, so I bought the GHD30 for $140 at Home Depot.

I show the control panel in the pictures above. The round knob is a humidistat, which switches the GHD30 on and off depending on the ambient humidity. So far, it seems to work well....
...
