We just bought an older house with a basement that smelled musty. Before we moved in we removed the carpet, which turned out to be damp on the underside. We also found evidence of previous plumbing leaks so we decided it would be best to try and dry out the basement before moving in.

We bought this particular size dehumidifier because of the manufacturer's recommendation for space, and I am very happy with the results. We emptied the 50-gallon tank at least twice if not three times a day the first month we lived in the house! We can tell a HUGE difference in the air quality downstairs - the dampness that pervaded the air when we first bought the house is gone. Now I think the basement is probably the driest place in the house. The best part is that the musty smell is completely gone - no more walking in the front door and being hit by that stale odor.

The dehumidifier comes with a filter that really does a good job. I let the filter go past its suggested replacement and...
...

Fotobug says "Faulty Controls?? Or Not Very Efficient!!!" about Frigidaire Dehumidifier - FDL50S1

I've gone thru THREE of these new units (Fridgidaire FDL50) in the past month. My units (all of them) turn on and run for 30 seconds to 3 minutes (after the humidity was reduced to the set point..45%). From that point on, I could here it turn on and run for a minute or so.. turn off for 3-5 minutes, turn back on for 20 seconds, turn off.. The same thing happening over and over. I took the first unit back to the store and received a new one.. It did the exact same thing, so replaced again after talking to Fridgidaire. The THIRD one is now doing the same thing. Either there's a bad batch of them, or they are incredibly inefficient!! If you buy one, be sure to monitor what it's doing after a few days when the humidy is stabilized in your basement.

And another BIG negative is that they are NOT repairable. I found this out after talking with Fridgidaire. "The are too expensive to repair, so we just replace them".. Wow.. Talk about NOT a GREEN company!!! What a waste...
...

Frigidaire FDL50S1 really made a difference in our basement. True, it is not quietest of all dehumidifiers out there but the noise does not bother me that much. What does matter is that it removes a lot of moisture and it is doing it fast. On our firs day of operation it filled the bucket (2.12 gallon) in 3 hours in 80% humidity at 75F

The controls are very well designed and easy to use. The unit is also capable of maintin specific humidity level which is a plus.

The humidity sensor is very accurate. The unit is diplaying very similar humidity level to my analog unit with a margin of difference of 5 which is the actual increment the unit is designed to show

As long as it will operate correctly it is a very good dehumidifier.
...

RationalMan says "Surprisingly effective workhorse - running for 2 months straight" about Frigidaire Dehumidifier - FDL50S1

We bought the Frigidaire FDL50S1 dehumidifier after our sump pump failed and brought in 3 inches of water into the basement. My woodshop occupies the basement, so I had to get it dried pretty quick. We picked this unit based on the amount of airflow it could push, the digital controls, and the option to connect a hose pipe to expel water directly into a drain. The unit worked great right out of the box - no disappointments or regrets.

Initially I had to empty the bucket every 2-3 days, and after a month I was down to emptying it once a week. The controls are not only intuitive, but simple and clear. The bucket holds quite a bit of water, and the attached float switch shuts down the unit at the right level, to allow you to remove the bucket and take it upstairs without sloshing out onto the floor. I haven't used the hose connection yet, although I'm about to.

The airflow is considerable - I use it at the high setting for maximum effect. Incidentally, the "noise" that other reviewers complain...
...

cindylaloca says "Turns off even when it is not full" about Frigidaire Dehumidifier - FDL50S1

I also own the Frigidare Dehumidifier FLD50S1 and to be honest it is awful. The thing shuts off even when it is not full and I am quite frequently emptying it. Our basement stays moist almost all the time and this just does not dry it up not even a little. The cost was in the middle of the price range as I did not want to buy the cheapest nor could I afford the most expensive. The air filter fills quickly and is hard to clean and expensive to replace, so I wash it off with the garden hose in the summer and in the shower in the winter.

It is raining right now in Ohio and I went down to check just before rating this and as usual it was not on and the basement felt damp. I emptied the half full tank and I had to jiggle it around in it's compartment to get it to turn on.

The only good thing I can say about it is that it is white in color. If I had researched this dehumidifier better I would have never bought it.

The Frigidaire FDL50S1 does what it's supposed to do, but getting the bin out of the machine is a major challenge that requires strength and dexterity to get rid of the water. SInce I can't find the instruction manual for this thing, I am just running it hit or miss, the method of setting the humidity level is not intuitive, so I'm just guessing as to how to get it to operate properly....

We bought this in an emergency situation because our electricity went out for 48 hours and the sump pump stopped working. We got water throughout the basement and it knocked out our existing LG Dehumidifier. Lowes had this Frigidaire and we spent the money on it, but not really happy with it. The water tank is hard to pull out to empty and the unit is so LOUD! I hate the thing! Needless to say, it does the job, but I can hear it upstairs. My husband found the reset button on the LG, so we have both running constantly, but if I had the choice, I would not have spent the money on the Frigidaire unit. If you can find an LG, go with that, the bucket has a handle, its quiet and much better than this thing.
...

matthewdfleming says "It dried out our basement, but the external drain kinda sucks" about Frigidaire Dehumidifier - FDL50S1

We bought the Frigidaire FDL50S1 Dehumidifier in an emergency situation. The massive amounts of rain that we got this year in Chicago caused our basement to flood. We had put drain tiles into the basement the year before, but water flowed over them into our only carpeted room. It was a lot of rain (12 inches in two days), our sump pump was running for about 5 days straight after the rain stopped! We thankfully already had a wet vac, so we were able to suck up a good bit of the water, but the carpet was still really wet.
After two days, the basement started to take on that moldy, damp smell. I searched online and saw that Lowe's had a 50-pint dehumidifier in stock (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=288372-70213-FDL50S1&lpage=none).
The unit performs admirably. It sucks the water out of the air at a pretty quick rate. I found I was changing the basin about 2-3 times per day. After about four days our basement was dry. I didn't really want to be changing out the...
...
