Do you like words? Do you want to help people? Well, Free Rice is a site where you can do both. Brush up on your vocabulary while helping to end world hunger. Each correct answer you submit not only raises your level, but also submits 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. Now I know that 10 grains of rice doesn't sound like much, but believe me, this site is addicting if you have a thirst for knowledge, and the amount of rice you "donate" adds up.

If you answer a question correctly, you get a question that is supposedly a little harder (although one criticism I have of the site is that some of the words in the harder categories seem easier than some of the words in the lower categories). If you answer incorrectly, the next question is a little easier. The question you answered incorrectly comes back later, so you have another shot at answering it (although many like myself think that having another shot at a question answered incorrectly is pointless, since the site...
...

What a great way to test one's word knowledge and donate to the world at large! The words involved make one stop and consider, but the grains given to the world are truly a source of sustenance for the hungry peoples of the world. To combine these two concepts is to feed and sustain our planet. Each of us is fed by such a game----those who need physical food sustenance and those who have a thirst &/or hunger for knowledge. This game is geared to older children, say ages 10 and up, to adults. I found I could handle many levels of play, but then I have an extensive vocabulary. I believe it would be a very useful tool in the classroom to strengthen the younger participators' vocabularies.
...

Free Rice is a wonderful word game that improves our vocabulary. Every time you have the correct meaning of a word 10 grains of rice are donated. I find it to be a great educational tool and recommend it to people of any age. If you make a mistake, the word will come back for another chance. This game can be played for a very long time as you watch the rice bowl fill. It is rewarding to know that I am helping others while learning and having fun.

Fun Rice is a worthwhile cause to support.
...

I couldn't get enough of this site when I first started playing. I liked to see my little piles of rice add up while I exercised my brain by testing my vocabulary skills. I still find it fun every once in a while though I get tired of playing more quickly now. They do have a few other options like grammer and geography. I hope in the future they add more games to keep people like me interested.
...

CountryMama says "Brain Exercise and Giving Back too!" about Free Rice

The Free Rice game is awesome. A friend of mine sent me a link to the website and I've been hooked. I play it every day.

Not only does it challenge your brain and keep your vocabulary up to date, but it helps feed the hungry by donating rice to the UN World Food Program to help end hunger around the world.

I've even gotten my kids to play on a regular basis so they can feel like they're doing something to help contribute to society and help the hungry. It also helps them with their vocabulary, spelling and geography too.

I do wish the site would donate more than 10 grains of rice, as that just doesn't seem like a lot compared to how many people are starving around the world. I also hope they make the words and levels a bit more challenging in the future. All in all, I think it's a great website and encourage everyone to use it.
...

I recently stumbled across the website FreeRice.com and absolutely love it! It is a non-profit website that donates grains of rice to the hungry around the world in exchange for your FREE participation in their vocabulary trivia. This wonderful website was started in 2007 by a man named, John Breen. United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has since taken over the website and it runs completely non-profit.

How does it work?

When you go go FreeRice.com, there is a vocabulary word and four possible definitions. Simply click on the definition that you think describes the word and if you are correct, ten grains of rice are donated to the WFP. If you are wrong, it simply goes to the next question and will go back to the question you answered incorrectly later. The correct answer is shown after each question, so if you get it wrong, you can pick the correct answer later. All grains of rice are donated to the WFP on behalf of the sponsors that advertise on the FreeRice.com website....
...

I found Free Rice a few months back from my teenage daughter. I find it brain stimulating and intriguing. Helping others while learning something yourself is a smart use of time. There are words I've never seen or heard of but some of them I can make out fromt he multiple choice answers. It also gives you second chances if you miss one. I visit it about once a week and usually spend a longer amount of time than I initially intended with it. It's definitely a favorite with me.
...

I found out about the freerice.com website from a magazine and decided to try it out. I'm glad I did because it is very fun. The main purpose of the site is to donate rice to the Un World Food Program. They donate 10 grains of rice for every answer you get correct. I always do the english vocabulary because I learn new words every time. I love trying to guess what some of the words mean. Most are easy because they usually give you one word that is fairly common and then you pick the definition from the choices. You can also change the subject. They have art, chemistry, math, language's, english, and geography. Most of the questions are so easy...it's a very easy way to donate your time to the needy. I also try to go to some of the sponsors websites because they are the ones donating the rice. This site is definitly worth playing around with because you get to donate and learn a little at the same time.
...

I am currently a teacher that insists that my classes mutli-task. We are moving at different paces in my class and once the general part of the lesson is complete students may be doing many different things. In my research for another project, I stumbled across a teacher that used this site as work for early finishers. It has a three-fold reward. The students can feel like they are playing a game, the website is compeletely educational and the students are unwittingly doing something good for someone else. How can that be a bad thing?!? Students will compete to see who can get the most consectutive grains of rice. It's something fun and educational for the students. The only down side is that for some of the categories the game is over too soon. Some categories only have one or two levels and it's very easy to finish them and get bored. Other than that it is a great site and I love it.
...
