rsilva says "Albom's Earth is more interesting than his Heaven." about Five People You Meet in Heaven

Mitch Albom's novel begins an hour before the death of its main character, an 83-year-old maintenance worker at a boardwalk amusement park named Eddie. Eddie dies trying to rescue a small girl from a falling gondola that breaks loose from a freefall ride in a freak accident.

The story is Mitch Albom's vision of Heaven, a place where the meaning of your life is explained to you by five people whose lives intersected your own, some of them in ways you might not have even noticed.

It's a story of closure and a story of purpose, of making sense out of the twists and injustices of life and of finding meaning in the small interactions that happen every day.

While the main plot of the story takes place in (a rather nondenominational) heaven, the book consists mosly of flashbacks, and it is in these sequences where Albom's writing really shines.

His characters are complex, richly detailed, and full of hidden beauty and intensity. From the blue-skinned sideshow freak to Eddie's abusive father...
...

Saw the made for TV movie before I read the book. Wish I would have read the book first!!I have to admit, I thought that the story was going to be a bit on the "gooey" side. But now, whenever I need a good cathartic cry, this is the first book I'll grab.

I like how the story flows, starting at the end of his life, back to his childhood, & then full circle to his future. Very thought provoking book, but no so deep that one can't grasp the gist of what Mr. Albom is trying to get at.
...

When I first heard about this book I wondered how someone could write a fiction novel about what heaven was going to be like - I didn't think it was possible, but when I started to read the book I couldn't put it down. By the end of the first page I was hooked. It was simple, easy to read and complex all at the same time. By the time you finish reading the last paragraph it's impossible not to think about the ripple effect your decisions may have made in someone else's life. For the rest of your life you may always wonder if the seemingly small decisions do make a difference. I've given this Mitch Albom novel to several friends and have recommended to friends, family and strangers alike....

I like books that are different from the average swing of things. This book has a different view and really makes a person think about their lives. The book isn't very long and is perfect for the impatient person who just wants the story to end. It's very detailed and doesn't go on for long paragraphs at a time about nothing inparticular. It's one of those books that makes you think, can make you cry, and is really worth reading....

"This is a story about a man named Eddie and it begins at the end, with Eddie dying in the sun." This is how Mitch Albom's book begins. This sentance alone leads to much intrigue. Who is Eddie? How did he die? Why is Eddie so important? This filled me with curiosity and definitely puts you in the right mindset to read this book.

For the first few chapters of the book, the author describes, in vivid detail, the very last hour of Eddie's Life. Although he is only describing one hour of his entire life, I felt like I knew Eddie immediately. I understood more of where he came from, who he was now, and his basic personality. To keep it simple, Eddie is a mechanic who works on Rollar Coasters at Ruby Pier. The author does incorporate some flashbacks to Eddie's life to allow the reader to know exactly what this guy is about.

'Today is Eddie's Birthday' is the general theme of the entire book. This is the title of all the flashback chapters. It is very interesting to see what happened on Eddie's......

This is a wonderful book. I could have read it in one sitting, however it touched some heart strings so I had to put it down once or twice. When I was finished with it, I forwarded it to my Mother & Son to both read. something worth sharing and certainly worth your time....

This book is amazing. It has a wonderful message and a great storyline. It is about a man, Eddie, who feels the life he lived wasn't' what he wanted. He dies and meets five different people in heaven. Each one either impacted Eddie's life or Eddie impacted their life. Each person has a message for him. Basically, this story is about how every single person affects every other person, even if that person doesn't realize it. This story is a quick read with a powerful message....

This book touched me in a way that stayed with me long after I read it. I started passing it around to friends right after, it was just one of those books that you want to share with the world. Though the title sounds religious, it is not a religious book. It really makes you think about how you affect others in your life without even realizing your own significance!...
