I bought my Eureka Whirlwind Lite #4388 at Kmart on 6 August 2003 for $69.99. ( looked at my receipt) It still runs great! I even use it to vacuum the 4' by 6' rug in the garage by the door coming into the house. It picks up rocks, sawdust, staples, nut and bolts and even dirt.
My Aunt passed and I took her Hoover Wind Tunnel Self propelled vacuum. I use it downstairs because it has more features than the Eureka. The Eureka is used upstairs by my Grand-kids to clean up their pig sty rooms. They have even dragged it down the street to our cousins house when his vacuum was broken. It has been knocked down the stairs and left out in the rain. Still runs. Still picks up everything. I gently wash all the filters in the garage sink and line dry them. Haven't spent a penny on one yet.
This morning I was empting the dirt cup and dropped the cup on the garage floor. The tab on the botton of the cup that is used to lock the cup in the housing cracked. A little duct tape (the handymans friend) now......

After years of putting personal convenience aside, I bought a bagless vacuum. I'd had use of three; a pre-1970 Kirby, a Rainbow from probably same era, and an old Hoover glide from the 50's. I liked the Rainbow the most due to the level of dust I get from dry unpaved mountain roads, but it was accidentally damaged.

I chose the Eureka Whirlwind because I'd had good luck with Eureka and heard good reports of quality for the price. I am all about quality for a low price. I've had my vacuum for about five years.

The filters get dirty and are expensive to replace, but I found that cutting and folding heat vent filters works quite well and at about a dozen for a few dollars they last inevitably. The belt for the rug brush has only needed replaced once which is a miracle with animals, children, and a million projects leaving invisible terrors like thread around.

Because of the type of fine heavy dust, I do find myself washing out the collection pan frequently and beating the filters......

When we moved to our new house, I needed to pick up a vacuum cleaner. I wanted one that was not cheap, but not overly expensive. I decided to get the Eureka Whirlwind, and now I wish I would have spent a little more. I would have probably gotten a better product.

After using it a few times, it started making noises and smelling like the belt was burning. Our home only has a few carpeted rooms, but after the few times I used it, alot of junk was getting stuck in the hose, and its very hard to clean out. I dont think I would recommend this vacuum, unless you are only using it for 1 or 2 rooms, and not very often!
...

UNBELIEVABLE! I was offered this vacuum by the Appliance Manager at Lowe's for $69.99 after I brought back a Dirt Devil Platinum Force that was 4 times the price. PF was under a year old, so they took the return, after it caught on fire vacuuming. Dirt Devil told me I was to change the filer at $59 each. Get to Lowe's for one as they are selling like wildfire!

Why go broke with all the filters needed when Eureka charges $5 for a set, but the Lowe's Manager told me to goto WalMart furnace filter area & see a bag slim & foot long filled with white filters that are cut to size for the vacuum for $5 a bag. Enough in there for 2 years. So that works out to $.10 a filter & it uses 2 halves, one in the base the other on the back of the canister.

So I take home this lightweight, no-expensive-anything vacuum. With 2 parrots and all their mess, I need something that cleans easily & this does. Just put some dish liquid in hot water in the canister afer emptying & watch the dirt wash out. Dry everything...
...
