Saxguy says "Yeah, there are flaws, but it's still very good for me" about Epinions

I've been a writer at Epinions for over 9 years. Yes, the site has its flaws, however, I like it and I will continue to write there.

I enjoy the earnings potential inherent in writing a hot review. I've had a few reviews (over a long time) generate more than $100 cumulatively, and others well into double digits, generally in electronics, computer hardware or computer software.

I also enjoy reviewing saxophones, clarinets and supplies, as I do at Viewpoints. I had originally been attracted to VP because band instruments and supplies were not reviewable at Epinions, something I disliked until they corrected it. I also think their financial resources have improved, as they were acquired by Ebay a few years back.

That having been said, people are clique-ish over there, and there are members who use their influence in a mean or arbitrary way. Still the Lead people in the two categories I have status in, musical equipment and sports and outdoors, are very nice, accessible and helpful.

AnimeMovieMan says "a site so laughable you have to see it believe it" about Epinions

Have you ever been to a site so inadequate, so laughable, so vile, you wonder how the heck could it exist? Epinions is that site.

I’ve read most of the reviews on here, and they’ve all nailed the point especially toward the nasty members and advisors to the site.

I am AnimeMovieMan a member for about a year on site. Epinions has got to be one of the worst sites the Internet has ever seen. Their whole reputation is built on lies “unbiased reviews” a family friendly site. Oh really a site that encourages it’s members and advisors to harass, revenge rate, stalk, and even issue death threats to members a family site? I think not.

I) The pay on the site was worthless. Reviews were literally just pennies. In fact, the terrible abusive management at the site, didn’t even pay me for the reviews I had written.

II) Terrible customer service-When I reported the users and advisors who were harassing me and downgrading my reviews from Very Helpful to Somewhat Helpful the customer...
...

thehazelco says "I think epinions.com is manipulated by the companies reviewed" about Epinions

i wrote a negative review of dell as it was a complete nightmare dealing with them and i didn't want to see others get ripped off. immediately my review was marked as not helpful. i looked through all the reviews and found it disproportionate that the positive ones were marked helpful and negative not. thus the negative were pushed out of view. i thought about the way epinions.com is set up and it's a system set up to allow for abuse. i noticed the positive reviews read more like dell advertisements. on unbiased sites you see way more negative reviews on dell (hell) than you will at epinions.com i believe you're getting dell's (hell's) opinion of itself. i have no interest in going to a site filled with ads posted by companies supposedly being reviewed. it's deceptive and immoral. it's trashing the web and should be stopped. i expect to see unbiased reviews, not a sham. ...

Queenbee75 says "Epinions is full of advisors who act like high schoolers" about Epinions

I signed up for Epinions.com about 3 years ago and began writing actively with them recently and got bumrushed with nasty comments and low ratings from advisors and many of them seemed to target me a lot. I got a comment recently from one of them saying how I needed to learn how to write a review when their reviews were not only too long, but they were much too in depth to really give a consumer something to think about. They feel that their opinion is better than yours. They have this habit of saying nasty things to you openly so that other viewers can see it and even join in to further embarass or humiliate someone and that's something that is really starting to get to some people. You think that people on this site would be acting like adults it's almost like you're in high school with the nit picking and the group taunted humiliations. Epinions needs to make some changes and strip advisors of their power so they don't abuse it in this manner.
...

Fardreamer says "Epinions: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly....." about Epinions

When it comes to reviewing books, movies, CDs, computer games, or even headgear, I'm not usually at a loss for words or fall prey to "reviewer's apprehension."

After all, I've been writing reviews, off and on, since I was a high school sophomore and writing for the Entertainment section of The Serpent's Tale, South Miami High's student newspaper. In college I continued to write reviews, especially about books and movies, for one of the Miami-Dade Community College campus newspapers, and although I didn't get back into the swim of things in the genre till I started writing consumer reviews (gratis) at Amazon in 2003, I've been doing it on a fairly regular basis for the past half-decade.

And still, when it comes to writing about Epinions, I find myself feeling somewhat bemused about my ambivalence about a site where I am still actively submitting my musings about books, movies, CDs, computer games, and other stuff (but not headgear). Maybe it's because I don't want to "bite...
...

vivasuzi says "The only good about Epinions is that it led me to Viewpoints!" about Epinions

I wrote at Epinions for approximately 7 years from March 2000 through sometime in early 2007. I started out addicted and loving it, and ended angry, upset and hating it. The site changed a lot over the years and based on the random visits I make to it now, I know it hasn't gotten any better.

Epinions is a review site, similar to viewpoints, but much harder to navigate, and with a much more high-school like community. I'm not even going to go into how the site works, etc, as I think once you see why I no longer visit you won't want to visit either.

Reasons why I no longer visit

The pay wasn't worth it - When I started I got paid per hit, that didn't last long and now you get paid by some random formula. My pay was around 4-5$ a month, if that, even if I posted 20-30 reviews. Right now they are offering 1-2$ per review as a special, but even with that, it's not worth it to write there due to the other problems.

Technically, the site sucks - When it comes to the actual technology...

...
