Both my husband and I were back in school for our BS's in Criminal Justice. We took the entire program on-line and only had one problem with our internet that entire time. The service department was great when we did have a problem.
...

disconnected says "From excellent DSL service to disfunctional after adding voice" about Earthlink

Earthlink DSL/Voice bungle.

I had only one problem with my DSL line for about 9 years, and that due to a line-person disconnecting me down the street. Then I swallowed the bait. Earthlink offered to bundle my DSL service with a limited minutes voice plan that gave me voice for free. I demanded that they leave my dedicated DSL line and my separate dedicated voice line as they were. No Changes they promised several times. Guess what? With the new service, I had no phone service until the phone was switched over to share the DSL line.

I could write a book about the consequences.
Intermittent slow service, minutes to load pages, then back up to speed in an unpredictable manner. DSL connections dropped at a Stupefyingly frequent rate, I thought I would wear out the power socket with the frequent re-powering of the DSL modem. And the phone chased this record hard. Disconnected calls and then unable to get a dial-tone, usually for about 15 minutes. Conversations ending in a digital stutter...
...

Michelle504 says "Earthlink is good enough for us." about Earthlink

We've had Earthlink since having our first computer in 1998 (our first computer was an I-Mac and our second computer is an E-Mac). We've always been on dial-up because it allows you to be on-line whether you have cable or not. The biggest annoyance is when the computer decides to hang up on you, but that's not Earthlink's fault. The biggest annoyance about Earthlink (other than not always accommodating Mac users) is that they outsource a number of their customer service calls to the Philippines. Other than that, we see no reason to switch companies or have anything other than dial-up. It's a fraction of what we paid for cable and worth the price. I just wonder what will happen when we have to get our third computer which will most likely have the universal binary, though we hope not to have to worry about that for several years yet....

penvan says "Slow dial-up, horrible customer service and a pain to cancel." about Earthlink

I had earthlink as my service provider for over 10 years. I finally had DSL available to me so I switched to AT&T Yahoo DSL. I called Earthlink to cancel my service and had nothing but problems having them cancel my service and stop charging my credit card. It took over 2 months of phone calls to customer service, who spoke broken english and instant messaging their customer service and I was still charged at the next billing cycle. I finally called my credit card co. to have the charge disputted. What a pain. I'd never recomend Earthlink to anyone!!!...

doctork says "Does not stand by "trial offer: Will not refund."" about Earthlink

I've been loyal ELNK Cable user and supporter for 3 1/2 yrs. Two events starting in June 07 make me disgusted and feel very betrayed. In the first, I ordered a VOLP hook-up system & paid $72.27. The items sent did not include speaker set. I learned that my 2 phone jack modem system was inadequate: 3 jacks = needed. Also I found that my existing phones would all have to be replaced (junked) if I got VOLP to work. Despite help from a savvy computer repairshop, I learned VOLP was incompatible with my CPU. I requested a refund and stated this in writing/also via chat. Supposedly a 2nd system was sent but never came. I was charged $7.00 more. After extensive chat one night, got a call at 4 AM saying my refund would be issued. Initial billing date 6/23/07. Refund/credit still not received despite several contacts to main office.

Ordered a basic ELNK system for a sibling, with $9.95 trial rate for 1st six mos & no strings attached 7/30/07. I initiated the billing on my credit card. Sibling...
...

Shel785 says "Great savings and great quality!" about Earthlink

We made the change from landline to Voip over a year ago and haven't looked back. I was able to set the whole thing up online and even kept my own phone number. The estimated up to three weeks for the box to arrive and it got here in under a week. The installation was a snap. We did hit a bump with an old router that we had to have changed out (thankfully, no charge with our service). Cost is very reasonable. Free long distance, voicemail, caller ID (which we'd never sprung for before), free call blocking, free online voicemail check, and more. When using the phone I've never even noticed a difference between the old landline and the Voip!...
