I loved this book. I now understand exactly where such a dynamic person got his strength. Thoughout his life he was surrounded by proud; caring; supportive; intelligent people that helped to shape him into the man he is today. I could not put this book down!
...

This book was written before Obama began his political journey which may end in the White House. It is interesting and moving regardless of who the author became. It is especially revealing to those interested in his thought process and what shaped him into the man he became. Dreams of My Father is highly recommended for any reader....

cj2018 says "Honest and heartfelt" about Dreams from My Father

Being a single, white mother of a teenage, Aftrican-American son, I was naturally drawn to Barack Obama's telling of his life. There were so many aspects of his story with which I was able to identify that it is difficult to justly summarize them here. Still, hoping that others will take the time to read this book, it is well worth trying.

Soon after graduating from Harvard, Mr. Obama was asked to write the story of his life. In an ideal family situation, a son or a daughter learns strength of character and compassion from a loving and nurturing father and mother. How many of us, though, have truly grown up a part of that perfect family? Believe me, I know that kind of family exists, and I have many friends who grew up in just such a setting. Some of us, however, are forced to learn strength and compassion from the father or mother that we did not know growing up. This is Barack Obama's story, as it is my son's story.

As we read his book, we are allowed to take a step into...
...

Sandman600 says "Dreams are about the only thing his father left him." about Dreams from My Father

This guy really knows how to push all the emotional buttons. Dreams from My Father? Give me a break. Does he mean the father who the Kennedy's personally sponsored to come to America? The father who herded sheep in Africa? The father who married a "white girl from Kansas" and then left when their baby was two years old, never to be heard from again? The father that he never knew?

Whatever values Barack learned from his father are not the values we need in the President of the United States. And the only dreams he has are rising to the top of his political profession, by whatever means he can employ to get there.
...

cassandra21 says "A real recommendation for this candidate" about Dreams from My Father

Read this book to get acquainted with this candidate, and I was so impressed by his thoughtfulness, thoroughness and passion. Although this book deals more with his personal history, a sense of the man behind the politics, it still hints at his positions and gives a great sense of him as a man of character, commitment, and common sense. Based on this and the more clunky, but still reasoned and intelligent Audacity of Hope, he has my vote! ...

Barack Obama's autobiography gives deep insight into his motivations and his hopes for this country and the world. When I read the book, simply to find out more about him, I found myself compelled to support him and his dreams for the future of this country....

Jo says "Obama Dreams from his Father; I dream of President Obama" about Dreams from My Father

To the Point

We just finished listening to the excellent audio book- CD - by Barack Obama called Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance. It was a terrific autobiography that my husband and I both very much enjoyed.

A Closer View

This is a 6-CD set. The book was originally written right after Barack Obama graduated from Harvard Law School. If you have been hiding under a rock Obama is running for President on the Democratic ticket. He’s young; he’s of color and he’s smart.

He wrote the book in 1995 before he was elected to the Illinois Senate. In 2004 he gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention. This speech as well as a new preface was added that same year.

If you are wondering who Obama really is this well-done autobiography will give you a thorough look at his life up until he starts law school.

The CD starts with Barack getting a call that his father had died. We travel with him from Kansas to Hawaii; from Kenya to New York; from Chicago...
...
