This film , originally a play was all but Doubt. This was written flawlessly with the intent of its audience doubting all of the characters at one point. I have watched this movie more than five times since i've seen it. I love it and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates a good one.

bkovacs says "Can priests and nuns do the right thing?" about Doubt

Let me say from the start that Doubt is a good movie with strong acting and a timely story. It's also long and slow at times, slow enough that I had to stop it halfway for fear I'd fall asleep. Still, Doubt is worth seeing and I recommend it.

The year is 1964, not long after the murder of John F. Kennedy. The characters in the film feel like they're still mourning the president's sudden death but carrying on as best they can. Sister James (Amy Adams) is a nun teaching a classroom of 12-year-olds in a Catholic school. Her principal is Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep), a stern disciplinarian who does not let the children step out of line. In the church next door, the priest is Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a gifted orator and storyteller who spins thoughtful sermons.

Father Flynn seems a little too attached to the new altar boy, Donald Miller (Joseph Foster), who is the only negro child in the school. Just how far does this relationship go and what does Sister James see? Can Sister...
...

bookfan5555 says "Interesting movie" about Doubt

Doubt was an interesting movie to see. I knew it had been up for several Academy Awards so when the Library where I work received this movie, I made the decision to watch it. I wanted to see what all the hoopla was about and why it had received all the nominations. Siffice to say, it was a good movie, but I was not overly impressed. I like Meryl Streep and it was creepy to watch her play this nun who not many people liked. I was saddened the way that she acted toward Father Flynn, who was only trying to help this young boy through some rough times. He was not doing anything bad but as the movie title suggests, there is enough "Doubt" in this movie to make it like something did happen.

Amy Adams was great as Sister James but it was her suspicions that she brought to Meryl Streep's character that started it all. It just goes to say, a little doubt is enough to start a witch hunt. All in all it was a good movie, but it was not a movie that I would want to watch again and again. I would recommend...
...

This was a non-glamorous role for Meryl Streep as the head of a Catholic school. She was fantastic as always. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was also outstanding as the priest who is suspected of foul play with an altar boy. The human dynamics in this movie were nothing short of remarkable. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who suffered through Catholic school as a child - much food for thought.
...

kevin says "You'll end up Doubt-ing why you decided to see this movie" about Doubt

Doubt (2008) is a movie set within a Catholic grade school and parish in 1960s Boston. The premise is that Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep) suspects Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) of having an inappropriate relationship with the only African-American boy in the school. The timid and younger nun, Sister James (Amy Adams), is caught in the middle of these two strong leaders of the parish and their resulting conflict.

Did he do it or did he not? The problem with this movie is that it doesn't come out and make a strong statement either way. It gets lost in it's own attempt to walk a middle road and to show how each character's motivations lead to the ambiguities of the situation. I can applaud the screenwriter's attempt to tackle a topical issue from all sides and without overtly casting blame, but it makes for an unfulfilling movie watching experience.

That said, the true redemption of this film comes in the strong performances that Hoffman and Streep deliver. The characters......

DOUBT Cast:
Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis.

DOUBT is set in the Bronx at a Catholic school, and the story centers on a nun (Played by Meryl Streep) who grows suspicious when a priest {Played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) begins taking too much interest in the life of a young man who is the only black student and is isolated from the other students because of his color. Is the nun being overly protective or not protective enough? And will she work within the system to find out the truth?

VIOLA DAVIS who plays the mother of the black student also offers a very powerful performance, which has earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in this years Academy Awards.

I would have given DOUBT a much higher rating, but I hated how the movie ended!

...

LoveisJoy says "The Only Action in this Movie is the Intellectual Kind" about Doubt

Doubt exists because life is gray and complicated, nothing is ever black-and-white, and humans are imperfect. So goes the theme of this intelligent, multi-layered movie. The characters in this superbly acted movie find comfort in conviction and certainty, but even the most devout and fervent among them must wrestle with questions of doubt
Meryl Streep stars as Sister Beauvier--a strict, uncompromising nun in a movie set in 1960s New York. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Father Flynn, whom Sister Beauvier suspects of spiritual--and criminal--wrongdoing in her school. Amy Adams shines as an idealistic nun who questions everything, but is tormented by her very uncertainty. On the surface, the film is a cat and mouse game between the two powerful personalities. However, layered throughout the film are larger questions that beg contemplation but are never fully answered by the movie. The viewer becomes a part of the experience because we are forced to face the questions raised, but...
...

TheBard says "A Conservative Nun sows seeds of mistrust" about Doubt

Bottom-Line: Doubt is a winner!

At the beginning of Doubt (2008) father Brendan Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman - Charlie Wilson's War, Cold Mountain, Almost Famous) delivers a sermon about feeling of doubt that seems to resonate quite profoundly with Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep - Mama Mia, The Devil Wears Prada, The Manchurian Candidate).

The sister later wonders aloud to her follow nuns what the father meant to convey by the sermon; was he speaking in generalities or was he speaking of himself and his own doubts? Was he speaking specifically of doubting ones faith, or was his sermon speaking more about life in general? No matter the meaning or moral of the father's sermon, Sister Aloysius, the head nun at St. Nicolas, bade each of her fellows to keep a watchful eye on the priest. And so it begins...doubt.

My Viewpoint

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep; it is rare these days to be privileged enough to see two masters of their craft perform together in the same venue. ...
...
