I haven’t read Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind, but I have seen the movie (I know, *scoff*). I acknowledge that there are probably significant differences between the book and movie but in a way it worked in my favor. It allowed there to be a number of surprises in Rhett Butler’s People.

Somewhat to my surprise, I really enjoyed Rhett Butler’s People! It was cool to gain insights as to Rhett’s youth. At certain points, familiar events would pop up that would make me smile. For example, Rhett is waiting on a train and has a conversation with a friend:

“Have you anything on this afternoon? Wouldn’t you like a day in the country? John Wilkes’s son is getting engaged and John is hosting a barbeque. Everyone is invited. Twelve Oaks’ hospitality…”

As soon as it hit that line I knew Scarlett was soon to enter the picture! The story was both romantic and thought-provoking. You follow Rhett’s pursuit of Scarlett, his involvement in the Civil War, his opinions on...
...

mom2acat says "A good read for Gone With The Wind fans." about Donald McCaig - Rhett Butler's People
RHETT BUTLERS PEOPLE
by Donald McCaig

This story is based on Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind, (my all time favorite book, by the way.) It tells Rhett Butler's side of the story; starting with his childhood, and going a few years beyond where GWTW ended.

There are other GWTW characters in the story, Scarlett O'Hara of course, and also including Ashley and Melanie Wilkes, and Belle Watling. We are also introduced to new characters, which include Rhett's sister Rosemary, Belle's son Tazewill, and Rhett's childhood friend and former slave Tunis.

Though I won't rank this book as one of my all time favorites, it was a very good read. It was interesting to see Rhett's perspective of many of the events in Gone With The Wind, though this book is not merely just a retelling of Gone With the Wind. While Ms. Mitchell's story was a more romantacized version of the war, Mr. McCaig's story of the war is darker.

I think this book will mainly be of interest to fans of GWTW, but it is also a strong......

tink1978 says "An amazing read" about Donald McCaig - Rhett Butler's People

I waited for this book to be released. I love the book "gone with the wind" and the movie. I loved the sequel "scarlett". So of course I had to read this one. Scarlett and Rhett are one of the greastest and tragic love stories, they both love each other but can never get on the same page. This book was wonderful at giving a little moe perspective to the dangerous rebel turned gentleman. I always wondered why he wasn't recieved not even by his own family- this book finally reveals these secrets. Anyone who enjoyed "gone with the wind" should pick this one up, I think you will very satisfied!...

LISAP says "Given the chance, this book will bring you into the "Gone" story" about Donald McCaig - Rhett Butler's People

I have to be very delicate with this review, as this book was a lovely gift from my family due to their knowledge of my deep love for "Gone with the wind".

That being said, this novel has a very slow start. The character development felt forced as if I may have a pop quiz later trying to recall all of the minor players. Yes, they all reappeared later in the novel, and the writer assumed his readers would research back to how they were connected to Rhett, I found the first two chapters to feel more like an English Literature assignment than recreational reading. I continued to read, however, with a gigantic smile on my face with my family watching.

By the third chapter, the author begins to blend the background of Rhett Butler with the story we all know and love and from that point on the book really takes a lover of the original story to places you never had been before and reveals events we never really understood! Silly women! I loved Belle Watling more than ever and the unbelievalble...
...

I got this by accident because I forgot to decline my monthly book club offers. Well I had it for months and went through all my other books when I decided I may as well try to read it since I didn't have anything else in yet.

I never read Gone With The Wind but now I can't wait to find my copy to read the other side of the story. This story was very touching and sad and happy all at the same time. You will find yourself lost in the goings on of Rhett. I was rivited by his tale.
...

njchicaa says "A horrible companion for Gone With The Wind." about Donald McCaig - Rhett Butler's People

I ordered Rhett Butler's People a couple of weeks ago because I am a huge fan of Gone With The Wind and was eager to get some more insight into the story. The book was billed as Rhett's side of the novel which is pretty much every GWTW fan's dream.

Unfortunately, Rhett Butler's People is a boring and depressing account of mostly new and unknown characters like Colonel Ravanel, RosemaryButler, Isiah Watling, Elizabeth Butler, Langston Butler, Tunis Bonneau, etc. Those who truly want to know more about Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler will find themselves disgusted at the garbage that McCaig tries to pass off as a companion novel to Gone With The Wind.

I would go so far as to say that my opinion of Rhett Butler will never be the same after reading Rhett Butler's People. The suave, unflappable mystique is shattered by details about his experiences with his father, best friends, travels, etc. We see Rhett only at his worst and the whole thing is supplemented with loads of detailed information...
...

I love Gone With the Wind and was really excited when I heard this book was going to be published. The premise of this book is to give the reader a more detailed look at Rhett Butler's life and relationships. I wanted to know more about Rhett Butler because not much is told about him in the book. This paints a more human picture of him. It shows that he was more than a blockade runner or an unacceptable person. This shows that he was a loving, caring person who often did things for other people in ways they didn't even realize. Another thing this book did was to show more about Belle Watling, the hooker or whatever that Rhett spent a lot of time with. It showed that she was a decent person who just got caught in a bad situation of having a baby and being unmarried. There were only two things that I did not like about the book. The storyline would be going very well and then would be interrupted by a couple of chapters of Civil War descriptions. I like Civil War history but it was not inserted...
...
