Camster246129 says "If you want a intelligent dog, get an Aussie!" about Dog Breed Australian Shepherd

I've owned Australia Shepherds for twelve years now and would not have any other breed of dog. Though I love all dogs! Be prepared to be "alpha dog" with an Aussie, because an intelligent dog prefers to think they're in charge. Their intelligence will amaze you!! With Australian Shepherds, you can train them to do anything you so desire.

These dogs are great for agility training/exhibitions/contests. They will even keep track of a person for you if you train them to do so. Give them lots of love, good food, good friendship, clear commands and they will be your best friend. If you treat them well (this goes for virtually any dog) they will always be there for you.

I've found that with my Aussies, I can talk to them just like I talk to anyone else. They understand more than just simple commands. But I believe that most dogs will respond to love and respect instead of commands.

butterfly4kathy2 says "LOVE this breed. Smart and wonderful" about Dog Breed Australian Shepherd

my boyfriend and I have a 2 year old Australian Shepherd named Sadie and we love her to death. She is smart and beautiful and sweet. There is nothing that she wouldnt do for us. We bought her from a breeder online and had her shipped to us. She was just over 10 weeks old and she has been great since the day we got her. She was easy to potty train and listens to everything very well. She didnt get very big, she is only about 45 pounds. I am sure that has a lot to do with the fact that she is a female, but we really like her size. She has a very thick coat and we have had to have to groomed a few times so that she doesnt get too tangled up, but it is worth the time and money. Simple grooming measures are all that need to be taken. She is one of the best dogs that we have ever had. We would not trade her for the world. And I highly HIGHLY recoomend this breed to anyone that like and active, sweet, smart dog that will keep you motivated to get outside and play. You will not regret it.
...

mcginnityj says "Australian shepherd: super friendly, hardly barks, ultra-playful" about Dog Breed Australian Shepherd

We had never even considered an aussie until I saw an ad in the paper for the right price. I must say that we could not have ended up with a better dog.

Our australian shepherd is very sweet towards everyone and tends to be a little overly-affectionate. She lives to play and loves performing tricks. She is very easily bored, however, and is starting to become a little destructive when we don't give her enough attention/exercise. She absolutely loves dogs and kids, and will try to get all animals to play with her, which is great except that she doesn't understand when an animal is telling her to back off.

I am currently pregnant with my first child and my dog has become very watchful of me (she just turned one). She will wait for me on the stairs to make sure that I am going to make it up okay. She will also check up on me periodically.

All in all, I would not trade my aussie for any other dog and when we look into getting another dog this fall, it will definitely be another...
...

I love my Australian Shep mix. He is a great provider but does in fact have a lot of energy. He is 5 years old now and is not even close to slowing down.

My only concern is we are expecting our first grand child and he has never been around children so I hope all works out.
...

ann86 says "A loveable bread and a great protector" about Dog Breed Australian Shepherd

Australian shepherds are very protective dogs. My family and I have never had a problem with people bugging us with out dog outside. The Australian shepherds are also very loveable. Our dog spends most of her time with us inside the house. Our dog is the cinnamon color which is the rarest color of the Australian shepherd. They are not small dogs nor or they big. They are great for taking with you on car rides. They do not allow anyone they do not know get close to your car. Australian Shepherds can stay clean for a long time and water runs off their coat. It takes a while for them to get wet. Like most dogs it's better to dry them off quickly when they get wet or you will have the smell of wet dog in your house. If you are trying to decide on what kind of dog to get I would recommend them. They are very good and loveable dogs. Great for families....

nysemt says "Aussies make the BEST companions!" about Dog Breed Australian Shepherd

Australian Shepherds (Aussies) are fantastic dogs. They are energetic, loyal, brilliant, and make great working dogs and/or pets. My Aussie is the (pet) love of my life! She is almost a year old and weighs about 45 pounds. They are a great medium sized dog. She is such a perfect companion too... she is very loyal and just loves to be in the same room as me. When my fiance and daughter return from being out, she will almost knock them both down to get to me!

Aussies have a lot of energy and need daily exercise. I wouldn't recommend an Aussie for someone who cannot take the dog for regular exercise or who works long hours. These dogs need lots of attention. They are very smart dogs and can perform a large range of tasks and tricks. Infact, we have taught our Aussie "shake", "other paw" (shake with the other paw), "high-five", "huggles" (front paws on our shoulders to give a hug), "kiss kiss" (put her nose to our mouth for a little peck), and of course the standard "heel",......
