I used to watch Dr. Who on PBS with my dad in the eighties. I am not into sci-fi at all. My dad is a Trekkie and into the Who series deeply. Out of all his interests, I shared in Dr. Who simply because it was a series I could follow because it centered around time travel. Time involves most of what we do so it was practical in a sense. We have wondered about the validity of the past, the future and how we apply the present. Dr. Who's cast involved real people who were relatable. In the area I live now, I was quite disappointed to find the local PBS doesnt air Dr. Who.
...

chewieinchicago says "The greatest sci-fi show of all (time)!" about Doctor Who

In the old series Dr Who often flowed with the times . the 1st Dr was in many historical eras while the 2nd opened up more to aliens . The 3rd Dr was a defender of the Earth and the 4th transcended nicely from planet defender to space traveler to universe defender.and so forth and so on . Thus the cannon of the old Dr was established . he was the anti-hero ,rebelling against authority to do what was right moral and just . The new series comes along and skillfully changes the entire dynamics . Where as companions were of minimal use and usually caused more problems in the classic episodes in the new series they are the key to many of his victories . Where as the Time Lords used to keep the Dr in check , the constraints are now off of him and he projects a sense of authority that he once rebelled against .
bottom line is the newly renovated series is tied in nicely with the old series but in a fresh new way that makes this extremely fun and enjoyable to watch.
...

Doctor Who is a great show that started in 1963 and Starred William Hartnell as The First Doctor. He had a grandaughter named Susan and Ian and Barbara Susan's high school teachers. In These first years not much was revealed about the Doctor and his origins. I liked this it gave him a lot of mystery. Susan leaves in Dalek Invasion Of Earth and marries a Earth freedom fighter named David. The Doctor Promises he shall come back and see Susan again. The next season we meet another companion named Vicki who joins the Tardis after crash landing on another planet. Ian and Barbara soon leave.

Then there would be Steven and Ben and Polly. Then The Doctor regenerates into the second Doctor Played By Patrick Troughton who we would soon discover is a Time Lord he gets exiled to earth and changes into Jon Pertwee who would be stuck on Earth for two seasons his best companions were Jo and the Brigadier after a adventure with spiders the Doctoer regenerates into Tom Baker who would be known as the longest...
...

I was never a fan of the original series but ever since they added David Tennant as Dr who I've been hooked. David Tennant is funny, handsome and very talented. I love the story lines and never miss an episode. Dr Who is a Time Lord who is over 900 years old and the only one left of his kind that he knows of. He has 2 hearts and travels in a phone booth that transports him in and out of time and worlds and alternate universes. He had a daughter on one world for about a day only to lose her in a fight when she stepped in front of a bullet meant for him. He once found out that he was married in another time only to see her die in front of him when she traveled back in time to save his life. He has lost alot of people in his travels and made alot of friends as well. If you have not seen this show and you have cable you have to catch it on the BBC Channel it is one of the best shows out there.
...

I remember Tom Baker. Later I learned to love them all. All my Doctors. And now Russell T. Davies has brought him back to life. Even better than before.

With Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, the Doctor Who franchise has been in the hands of wonderful actors. We wait patiently for the unveiling of Matt Smith. As Russell T. Davies and Julie Gardner hand over the reins of Executive Producer to Steven Moffat, all of us who love a great story with intricate twists and turns, good laughs and sometimes even a tear or two sit up on the edge of our seats. Of course, don't forget to get a really big couch to hide behind because Steven's stories can sometimes be wildly terrifying too!

If the series had been handed to anyone else, I would have been skeptical. After the season with David Tennant and Catherine Tate, I was surprised that anyone would even try to make more episodes. There was just so much that was so wonderful.

The moment I found out that they would be bringing back Doctor Who I was on the edge of my seat. As a life time fan of the series I can honestly say that I was not let down when the new episodes of Doctor Who aired. So far they have gone through two Doctors and both times the choices were amazing. R. T. Davies deserves a medal for this incredable accievment. Not only are the storylines captivating but the effects and direction are spot on. I would highly recommend that you give Doctor Who a try. I promise you will not regret it.
...

ParkMaster2000 says "best continually written sci-fi series for almost 50 years" about Doctor Who

WHO would think that any show would be around so long? Not even a daytime soap could claim that! Entertaining people all around the world (and anywhere else in the galaxy that can interpret television signals) for almost 50 years, DOCTOR WHO has enlightened people of all ages throughout time.
Continually ever-changing, DOCTOR WHO has kept up with the times. No other series can boast that claim. Okay, there have been other series that have augmented their storyline to adapt, but the stories in general find themselves lacking in content even after 4 years on television.
The next closest series to compete would be STAR TREK. Even through the generations of programs and movies, this series has repeated or mimicked other storylines from past incarnations and has NO fluidity of technology for the series itself. DOCTOR WHO has never repeated a story nor forgot how technology changes throughout time.
If one was to compare STARGATE to DOCTOR WHO (oh, the battle commences), one would......

You Can't Help But Fall In Love With Doctor Who and the spin off series Torchwood. This show leads you through sci-fi fantasy and makes it a reality by bringing aliens and monsters right into your bedroom. Doctor Who can be a very educational experience since the show not only deals with space, but time. One episode can be on another planet and the next in present time on Earth. It can lead you through history getting to know historical figures and those not so well-known. The aliens and CG is a little quirky at first, but given the chance it will shine through with its endearing characters and have you coming back for more. It premieres 1st on the Sci-Fi channel and then on BBC....

Doctor Who originally aired on the BBC and ran for 27 years. After a nearly 17 year hiatus, the show has been revived by Russell T. Davies (creator of "Queer As Folk"). Davies take on the Doctor manages to be simultaneously up to date and respectful of the original material. The new Doctor has already been played by two actors, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. While Eccleston's performance as the Doctor was well received, it's Tennant's quirky yet subtle take on the 900 year old Time Lord that has garnered the most raves.

Already into its 4th season, the first three seasons have been released on DVD. Each season set comes complete with execellent commentary by Daves, Tennant, and other cast and crew members, along with lots of behind the scenes footage and the complete "Doctor Who Confidential" series. Don't miss it!
...
