Tip says "very deep/thought provoking/not as simple as appears" about Discovering the Golden Compass: A Guide to Philip Pullman's Dark Materials

This is the first in a really different trilogy. Not as simple a story line as it appears, unlike the Lord of the Rings or the Narnia books, were it's pretty clear who and what is evil and needs fighting.

The Compass books require a bit more thought, they are working on more than one level and I'd advise people who think them disturbing to actually read all 3. They are the perfect books for a reading circle/group to discuss and dissect.

The most basic premise they make is that anything taken to extremes (at either end of the spectrum) is potentially dangerous. (Won't go into any specifics in-case I spoil someones read.)

I grew up on with the likes of Narnia (with all it's christian morality) and loved them, still re-read them now. I didn't find anything to challenge anyones beliefs in the Compass books, just the advice to think through judgments, reasons and choices that we make. And to be honest about those reasons.

Hope this helps.
...

shellibyrd says "Didn't read it...don't want to" about Discovering the Golden Compass: A Guide to Philip Pullman's Dark Materials

I do not ever intend to read this book or watch the movie...I'm not one to FORCE my views on others, but any story that results in (from what I hear) some human actually killing
God (which is impossible anyway), well, it makes my stomach turn. It's trash like this that accomplishes Satan's purposes. I know that there are people that don't believe in
God, and though I feel sorry for them I respect their right not to believe. But to make a book/movie to try to appeal to children that would pollute their minds is irresponsible. It falls into the same category, I guess, as movies with too much violence or sex. The parent needs to make sure that their children are not seeing movies that will influence them in ways that the parent doesn't like or want for their child....

katyob says "an enchanting story full of excitement and fantasy" about Discovering the Golden Compass: A Guide to Philip Pullman's Dark Materials

I wanted to read this book because of all the contoversy , and I have grandchildren who will want to see the movies. I wanted to be well informed and familiar with the material when the decisions were to be made if the children should be allowed to see it or not. I found nothing to justify all the hype. It is fantasy, Yes their are bad characters in it, how dull it would be without any. Yes there is fanasty, and witches, how cool. The Wizard of Oz, Bewitched, and endless other great stories had all of that "fun" stuff. I saw nothing about wanting "God" dead, no anti-christian plots. This story is pure fun and entertainment, I recomend it highly. I have not read the two other books yet, but look forward to doing so. I have them and plan on starting tonight. As soon as the movie is released I look forward to seeing it. I also look forward to taking my grandchildren for an afternoon of fun and excitement....

Do NOT go to see or purchase this movie. It is against everything that is true. The writer's goal throughout his books and this movie is to kill God in the minds of children. If that happens, where will they turn when they need God?
This movie should be banned. Don't be passive, take a stand for what is right.
...
