TimothyL says "Discover credit card company has poor customer service." about Discover - Credit Card

The Discover credit card was possibly the first credit card to offer cash back on purchases. But don't be deceived by promise of 1%, 2%, or even 5% back. Generally, your total charge must reach a certain amount before you begin to earn 1%; that is, for amounts lower than their scale, you only receive 0.25% and then 0.50%. Each version of the Discover card has their own rates and percentages scale, and usually with the 5% back, it only covers certain categories of items.

While this can be confusing, what upset me the most about Discover was their customer service regarding fraud or unsatisfactory purchases. When I bought something online (one payment with Discover and one payment with MasterCard) and had problems with the company, Discover would not help me. They wanted me to deal with the company itself (which I did unsuccessfully, and which is why I called Discover to intercede). MasterCard, however, refunded me, absorbing the loss, and proved to me they were pro-consumer not...
...

karlarhea says "Not a bad credit card, but there are several better ones." about Discover - Credit Card

I was a very early adopter of the Discover Card, and was more and more pleased as it became more widely accepted. It is still an above-average card and company, as the card has no annual fee and quite good customer service. But the cash-back bonus has dwindled dramatically over the years. It used to have several tiers of bonus percentages based on your annual spending, and those have been reduced. (My two favorite cards pay the highest percentage from the first dollar of charges.) And Discover stopped paying ANY bonuses at Wal-Mart or Sam's. That made several other cards much more lucrative. One selling point of Discover is that they double your bonus amount if you redeem it for particular gift cards. While this makes the cash back amount more profitable for the customer, it locks you into a particular company to purchase from. And you have to keep up with a gift card, remember to use it, and not let it expire or incur dormancy fees. This is an okay card for those of us...
...

ReviewIdiot says "Nice card, limited use" about Discover - Credit Card

The Discover Card comes in several varieties. Consider the Open Road card. This pays 5% back in gas up to a maximum of $100 of gas purchases a month (I think it's $100 but double check). This is the highest that I've seen.

Other Discover Cards pay for some other categories and they rotate. That's very confusing and time consuming to monitor.

One drawback of the cashback scheme is that you have to reach $20 before you can redeem. Another drawback is the cashback amount is not that great. Another drawback is that not every merchant accepts the card. Another drawback is that it is primarily for domestic US use as most stores in other countries never even heard of the card.

So it's difficult to live only with the card but it's a good supplemental card.

Theft wise, they monitor gas purchases so if you try to buy gas 3 in the same day, they make sure that you are not a crook.

Overall, I recommend this with a few minor reservations.
...

I was 18 years old and how do you establish credit when you have none?? I couldn't get a loan and wasn't approved for any credit cards? How was I suppose to establish my credit. I applied for the Discover card and now 18 years later still have it. I was so apprecitive they gave me a card. I now have outstanding credit and it was because they gave me a chance to get some credit! I used to love their rewards program...because I am a saver type. I love the fact there is no annual fee and if I pay it off every month I never get charged interest. So the card for me to have is free. And then to top it off I get rewards! So a card that is free and then get rewards. I loved it but other cards started coming out with better rewards programs where I would get more back so sytopped using my card as much. I wish they would try to keep up with other rewards programs but I will always be thankful they were the only company years and years ago that would give me a card when I had no established credit...
...

four stars: I use my discover card in place of a debit card and pay off the balance each month, usually receive about $20 bucks every two months with zero interest. Only thing is it is not honored everywhere, so you might bring a back up visa to avoid an embarrassing moment. I don't like the APR on my card, probably a big reason I never run a balance, my credit rating is above excellent , 822, so I think I should get a better overall rate.
...

As an incrediably poor new mother with a fair (ok huge) amount of credit card debt, Discover card was one of the first cards I stopped paying on- BUT called and tried to work out payment plans, they refused, total crap. Every single other card I had was willing to work stuff out with me- and guess what- they got their money. I should also mention that before I got preggo with DD and had to stop working I had been with discover card for seven years and NEVER had a late payment, and always paid above the minium- it's not like I was some life-long deadbeat.

Oh and their "cash back" thing is worthless. In my seven years with discover card I got like $20 back which was less than one month of interest
...

They also have low APR for balance transfer. Payment cycle is flexible and can be customized. It appears in different images.
The Discover is one of the best cards we have found to date. The fees are low and the offer so many services with their card. We get a monthly bill online and I can pay it online as well. We have had ours for almost a year and I wouldn't trade it for a capitol one or any of the other ones out there. We also have no yearly fees. This card has come in handy many, many times. IF you are looking for a great card, Discover is it....

i have been with Discover card for nine years and sometimes they have a low interest plan that lasts only for so many months. When you are trying to save money for other bills, you would like to to have a low interest to make your payments and not something where it takes all of your money. some women are single and they cannot make these high interst payments if they are steadty going up on them. think of this the next time you think about charging high interest on these bills....

Discover is like any other credit card. Their interest rates are too high and they continue to increase them while the rules are an ever moving target. The payments go to low interest purchases first, they charge interest back to the original date of the purchase rather than the month in which you may not have paid your full balance. Additionally, Discover is not accepted everywhere because they charge higher fees to the vendors that choose to accept the cards. I personally have cancelled all of my credit cards. I prefer to go the cash route.
...
