My Dell Inpsiron has lasted me almost 3 years now, which is the longest I've had a laptop. Plus, it's been dropped a couple of times (I have 2 big dogs who have knocked it off the couch). I have never had a problem with this computer and how it operates. At times, it seems to perform a bit slowly, but that has only been more recently, and I have a lot of programs, pictures, music, etc. on it. Newer Dells are coming with a lot more storage space, so that should be less of a problem with a newer one. The only cons about it are that it seems to be maybe a tiny bit on the cheap-ish side just because the screen and its frame sort of have some tiny gaps in them (totally fine for me, I don't care except that I have a few dog hairs that have gotten behind the screen), and that it's not the sleekest, smallest computer. But again, for me, I don't care. I care that I was buying Toshibas and HPs and replacing them every 12 months. I care that this one has lasted me almost 3 years and is still going...
...

The Dell Inspiron E1405 would be fine for people who don't use their computer every day. However, for people who travel with their laptop a lot, or people who aren't extremely kind to their computer, I wouldn't recommend it. I'm a college student and have had the computer for three years now. My Dell warranty ran out two years ago, and if it weren't for my school technology services, it would certainly not be in any functioning shape today. Once your warranty runs out, Dell is completely unhelpful. Their online support is limited, and speaking to a representative without a warranty is impossible. I have had problems with the operating system, with my hard drive, and with the physical computer itself. The screen is coming unhinged, buttons have fallen off, and the keypad scroll doesn't work. Many of my friends with Dell laptops have had the same problems, so it doesn't seem to be specific to this model. However, I must be honest and say that I am not the kindest person...
...

lovetoglobetrot says "You're better off getting a Mac... or at least an HP." about Dell Inspiron E1405 Laptop

I am sorry that I purchased this laptop. I needed a new computer for graduate school (had never owned a laptop before), and the only reason I didn't purchase a Mac was because my school's website strongly recommended students purchase PCs. It turned out it's not really a problem to have a Mac. The computer runs extremely slowly, whether opening Word or My Computer. Whenever I call Dell about an unrelated problem, they ask me if my laptop is running slowly and if I'd like to purchase more memory for $75. What I'd like is for the laptop to run well without having to purchase additional memory. They should have included more memory on their computers if they knew Vista would run slowly. I've also had to have the keyboard replaced at my expense. My boyfriend has an HP laptop that has a built in microphone and webcame (the Dell Inspiron E1405 has neither), and when he opens up the computer after it has gone to sleep, it works right away. My Dell on the other hand, takes almost 30 seconds to......

I really like my dell laptop. The computer came with an "upgraded" glossy screen that really is horrible. The glare is so bad you can't use it in any type of sun light. The battery pack that came with the original computer was pretty weak and didn't last long. I was able to replace it with a generic from ebay and now I love the computer even more.
...

Only after 1 year, the battery can only last for 5 minutes, I hope that Dell can recall all the batteries which have potential problems.
Dell Inspiron E1405 laptop is a good piece of device and is good both for office and home use. With 2 GB ram and intel core duo processor the performance is good if you use windows XP. The only problem I faced that it came with Vista and I had to reinstall XP as most of the applications I use were not compatible with vista. The necessary drivers are available on Dell's website. But the customer support is not very good.
I could not run Visual fortran application on it even when I changed the operating system from vista to xp and the customer support could not help me and I wasted lot of my precious time on it. The softare support from Dell is very expensive.
But otherwise I leave my laptop open most of the time and I am happy with the overall performance.
...

I am very pleased with the Dell products I have owned three Pcs and 3 laptops - upgrading each time, I also have the in home service and have needed very little repair, and when it was needed they responded promplty and provided service within 24 hours in my home - that alone is worth the product. I am searching now for a new laptop with a docking station to replace an older Dell PC, as I like being able to take the lap top with me. I dont think there products are as good as they once were but they are still far better than what else is out there....
