I have had this computer for about 5-6 years. I have had at least that many cataclysmic failures. I had to use the recovery disks several times either because of the laptop or updates that hurt the laptop from Microsoft. The screen was faulty just months after purchase. Had to give up the computer to get the screen replaced. They returned it with a shadow in the start button. Still there. Then the MS update problem. Then the hard drive died. The website wanted an idiotic amount of money for a replacement so I went to Ebay. Dell let me know in no uncertain terms that I was up the creek. I will never purchase a Dell anything EVER again.
...

I have had this computer for 3 years now. i have never been a big fan of dell however this laptop is not bad. they best part about this laptop is the size its small and lightweight making it very portable. works well for anything basic like internet and word processing. The biggest issue with this computer is that i have had to replace the power cable 3 times and have even been shocked once. im not buying cheap aftermarket cables either. these do not hold up well at all and can be very dangerous. also I have had to completely format and reinstall everything 3 times, luckly dell keeps a recovery install on a partioned space on the hard drive. but i finally have not had any issues on the computer when i put my own version of windows xp on and just installed the dell drivers i needed off the website getting rid of any dell junk thats included on the computer that is useless and slows everything down
...

spaldero says "Had my Inspiron forever!" about Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop

My husband and I have had the Inspiron 8200 for just over 5 years, and it's still going strong! It is a pretty basic laptop, but perfect for everyday use going on the internet, downloading and playing music, etc. The laptop itself is quite bulky and heavy, but considering how old it is, what else would you expect! This computer is very durable as well. I can't count how many times we've dropped it and nothing turns out wrong with it, not even a mark on it to show how it landed. Two years ago we must have had a virus because we went to turn it on one day, and all it showed was a black screen. We called Dell, and they were very quick in sending us a new hardrive. A result of that, is that we lost everything.. documetns, songs and most importantly pictures.. including ones from our wedding. Since then nothing major has happened to the computer. Another con I can think of is how hot it gets underneath, too the point you can't be wearing shorts and have it on your lap! All...
...

Hello,

In October, I found my Dad's old Dell 8200 sitting on a shelf in the basement while we were cleaning the basement. I was able to make the hard drive operational again. I decided to make this my main computer by upgrading the memory, hard drive, battery, speakers, and mouse. Well, after five months have passed, thousands of man hours invested in work (both mine and paid help), the hard drive crashes. I call Dell's technical support (Who have been a great help in the past) and they tell me that they can't/won't help me or replace the hard drive. They tell me to contact the manufacture and they will replace the hard drive. I call them and work my way through their answering service and finally reach a real person. They tell me that I have two choices, One - I could send the hard drive back after removing all the data off the hard drive, and they would send me a replacement. Two - They could send me a new hard drive, place a $80.00 hold on my bank account which they would remove after...
...
