motleybabe says "Doesn't even come close to TiVo" about DIRECTV Group - HD DVR

I have used 3 DVR's: TiVo, Dish PVR, and DirecTv DVR. The directv DVR is the WORST. I don't think anything can compare to TiVo, but directv has fallen very far from the DVR tree!

It's supposed to record 2 shows at once. The 1st DVR I had to replace because it would only record 1 show. So now, I'm on my 2nd DVR and it too has problems. The remote has to be directly pointing at it, with NO obsruction of view, to work at all. We're constantly over fastwording and rewinding because the dvr doesn't respond to the remote commands. Even after repeated battery replacements. Also, it very frequently doesn't record shows...just randomly. Even if it's in the to do list, it doesn't record.

I am just waiting for my contract to expire so I can rid myself of this terrible product. DirecTV should go back to using TiVo boxes!!
...

I have used the Direct TV DVR serive for over 2 years. I shopped around and feel that this is the best year. Since i renewed my contract when I moved, I continue to get my DVR service for free. The average monthly cost is about $65 for a decent package (including taxes, etc). I can watch my shows when it is comvenient for me. i don't know what i ever did without it!
...

CloudNine says "It's kind of a dunce" about DIRECTV Group - HD DVR

I need to preface this review by stating that I have been spoiled by Tivo. Years ago, we switched to satellite from cable, and I researched everything. We decided to go with DirecTV because the price per channel was cheaper. (I told you we did our research!)

Anyway at the time, they had just started into a deal with Tivo. So we got an actual Tivo box and remote. (My husband talked the guy into giving it to us for free! Go, Babe!) Flash forward about 4 years. The Tivo box breaks entirely. There was a power outage across the entire valley. When I got home from work, the awesomest gadget ever was no more. I tried to resurrect it. I even tried my patented method! (take it apart and vacuum the inside) My method has saved countless gizmos, but not the ill-fated Tivo box. :(

So, we call DirecTV. Having been happy customers for 4 years, 2 without a contract, we figured they'd have some sort of "you're so awesome and loyal" deals. um... no. Well, ok. Did they have any Tivo boxes? well... no, again.......

tapowell94 says "Never Change from Direct TV.. Really" about DIRECTV Group - HD DVR

We recently changed to Dish Network because my husband wanted the NFL package.

It was so not worth it! The new DVR system is so much more complicated! It's hard to prioitize, and occasionally confusing with the Dish.

And talk about your slow response! Just try Dish over Direct. You'll think you hit light speed.

Direct TV was easy to use, and had clear onscreen instructions. The telephone techinical support was always helpful.

I've become an okay user at the Dish, but Direct TV will always be my favorite.
...

geotuck says "best thing ever did for A/V system" about DIRECTV Group - HD DVR

The DIRECTV HD DVR has amazing video playback. 5.1 surround sound output is great. You need to buy the optical audio cable seperately. It comes w/ a 6 ft component video cable so get a longer one if the tv is further than that. If you have an internet connection you can use the Video on Demand to download movies or TV shows. You would also be able to access your pictures & music from your Windows Media Player shared computer.

I found the remote response was a little slow. You also have the ability to record 2 shows at once & watch a 3rd. You can also record your shows to VCR easlly. There is a seperate output from the DVR right into the VCR which won't affect your HD picture.

All in all I'm glad I upgraded to HD. The Direct TV Tivo still has the best features to control, search & playback TV. If they could only merge the HD DVR w/ TIVO funtionality.
...
