Tip says "entertainment with a moral" about Charlie Wilson's War

We watched this film on DVD last weekend. So sorry I missed it when it was playing in the cinema, I just knew it would be a good film. And I was right, the dealing, back scratching and all, although not a surprise to anyone was artfully portrayed. The characters were "real" human beings, warts, bad choices, bad moods and all.

If you missed this, as I did - rush out now, rent it and microwave the popcorn.

I promise you'll enjoy this film for it's acting, story line, some of the dialog is truly brilliant, the message it delivers at the end of it all is priceless and relates directly to the "international problems" with us today.

This is not only a movie with some great actors, but well made and educational. I could remember all of these things happening when I was growing up and my daughter was educated as well. Very entertaining and edcuational movie. a little racey for children younger than 13....

Being political activists, we really liked this movie. The acting was right-on and the movie was very true to the History Channel's documentary on Charlie Wilson. It was a very sound foundation on which to build our opinion of why we should or why we shouldn't be in Iraq. Young people would glean a lot of history out of watching this movie and further their understanding of political, religious, and racial tensions in that part of the world. We recommend it to anyone who wants to be better informed on this part of history and how it continues to this day....

The movie is quite interesting and gives an inside view on how congress works. In "CWW",congressman Charlie from the great state of TX is a fun-loving US patriot. He and his matronly lady freind decide to help the down-trodden Afghani people rid their country of Russian oppression by contributing arms and money to freedom fighters in Afghanistant in the mid 80's. Its a thoroughly satisfying movie the way Hollywood used to be,glamorous sets,back room government dealings,exotic locales and fantasticaly perky characters all blend to make it a pleasure to watch.For he's a Charlie good-fellow that can hustle the muscle and money to aid foriegn nations in strife....

After see this movie, the pharse "road is paved with good intentions" in our effort to help, we set ourselves up for what is perhaps the largest fall, in recent US history. It also gave one reason to want not to help othersm and start helping our own people here.

Fix our problems first, sound self centered, but if we are going to remove the stains from our hands we need to use a strong soap. Also I cannot imange how the really Charlie must feel now, he really cared and tried to help, but the "road is pave with good intentions".

My husband and I are the proud parents of a 2 1/2 yr old so as you can imagine we don't get out for movies much. In fact this is the second movie we've seen at the theater since our son was born. Knocked up was the first movie and it was a terrible waste of money and our precious "alone" time!

Charlie Wilson's war was definitely worth paying a babysitter for. Although the subject (war) is a serious one. Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman managed to make this movie interesting, funny and educational. I left feeling entertained and I also learned things that I didn't know before seeing the movie.

I would definitely recommend seeing this movie as soon as you can!

I found Charlie Wilson's War to be a really well-written movie, with dialog that kept me interested and riveted the whole way through. This movie also gives a really intriguing view of recent history and how politics supposedly gets played.

As always, Philip Seymour Hoffman steals the show by being profoundly in character and not missing a beat. Tom Hanks does a good job of showing range of emotion and Julie Roberts, well.....I guess they needed another big name.

Despite the intended blockbuster-ness of this movie, I thought it did a good job of showing the character development of Charlie Wilson, a man without much purpose in politics who suddenly finds himself championing a cause, even if he can't do the same for his personal life.

In short, I would recommend this as a highly entertaining, interesting and intellectually stimulating movie, despite that Julie Roberts, who, sadly, just keeps showing up everywhere.

I liked Charlie Wilson's War a lot more than I thought I would. I am always interested to learn how the way the movers and shakers that run our government do things. Charlie Wilson's War, I'm happy to say did not disappoint. I don't think that actor Tom Hanks gets enough credit for his part in the movie though, because most of the credit is goint to Seymore Hoffman, who I think is equally great in the movie....

When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in December, 1979, little did the Soviets know that it would become their Vietnam and lead eventually to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Also, little did a relatively unknown US Congressman from the Second Congressional District in Texas realize the part he would play in that collapse. This wonderful film based on the book by George Crile and directed by Mike Nichols is easily one of the best films for 2007.

Not only is the story engagingly and wonderfully told by Aaron Sorkin's (The West Wing, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) marvelous script and dialogue, but each of the acting performances are spot on from Tom Hanks's portrayal of Charlie Wilson, to Julia Roberts portrayal of the Christian and rabid anti-communist Houston socialite Joanne Herring to Philip Seymour Hoffman's cynical role as CIA agent Gust Avrakotos on the outs with his agency (this is another is a series of great roles Hoffman has been in this year. I went into this movie with some reluctance, being with my family group and not having much choice in the matter.

I found I truly enjoyed the experience; the movie was not only incredibly humorous in parts, but also well paced and entertaining. At no point did I feel bored or that the movie was lagging a bit. I was a tad underwhelmed with Julia Robert's performance, but considering her part I suppose she managed to do a sufficiently decent job. I thought Tom Hanks was wonderful, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman was completely hilarious!

All in all, I would have to give this movie 2 thumbs up.

To the Point

I'm not a great movie reviewer and only review movies when they are really popular and/or I feel strongly about the movie. Since I feel differently about Charlie Wilson's War than most people I wanted to share my thoughts.

A Closer View

Charlie Wilson's War is based on a true store and is considered a political satire. Would I have looked at the movie differently if I had known that's what director Mike Nichols and writer Aaron Sorkin had in mind? No I'm sure not. There is one telling fact for me that determines the rating scale I give a movie and that's whether it engaged me which is tied into whether I want to go to sleep. Charlie Wilson's War neither engaged me and I really did not only want to fall asleep but I did nod off for a moment or two.

The cast of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts brought us to see the movie. In my view this was one of Tom Hanks' weakest movies although his accent was good. I felt actually bad for Julia Roberts. After recently watching a segment about older......

I've been seeing lots of movies lately and one I looked forward to was Charlie Wilson's War. I really wasn't sure what the movie was about but it quickly became clear that Charlie Wilson was an actual US congressman and he spearheaded efforts to arm Afghanistan's mujahadeen in their battle against the Soviet Union in the 1980s. The results of that arming are still playing out in battlefields all over Afghanistan but that doesn't diminish what Congressman Wilson did in the mid-1980s. Yes, the movie is about a true story.

Charlie Wilson, a booze-loving and skirt-chasing do-nothing congressman from Texas, sees that there is an opening to punish the Soviets in Afghanistan and he somehow finds the one person in the CIA who can possibly help. Soon, the two are plotting how to get weapons to the mujahadeen that will shoot Soviet helicopters out of the sky. The battle eventually goes from a duck shoot for the Soviets to a grinding, bleeding, can't-be-won cat fight.
