mattchopin82 says "Little sleepy, but curbed my anxiety/depression" about Celexa (Citalopram)

I have a long history with mental illness. Various disorders run in my family, and I've been treated repeatedly for depression/anxiety. Previously, I've been prescribed Wellbutrin and Prozac - a combination which worked great, except for the seizures. Yep, turns out I'm one of the few that happens to be prone to seizure activity, and thus have to take care when using anti-depressants (most have a slight risk of seizure activity, which is amplified by previous seizures)

So, after discussing my past health issues with my provider, Celexa came up as a low-risk option. It's been working well for me, helping to control my anxiety and depression. I have not suffered any sexual side effects, just the slight lethargy (kind of ironic, as this is a symptom of my depression to begin with) however that seems to be passing as my body adjusts and adapts to the meds. Overall, good product, manageable side effects, highly recommended.
...

I started taking Citalopram 2 weeks ago and so far it's OK.

The only problems I have with this medication is laziness and sleepiness, no energy, and doesn't help my social anxiety much.

I didn't get much side effects when starting on this pill which is a good thing in my book. Other anxiety and depression pills I've taken in the past were horrible on my body!

Overall I do like this medication and I'm still waiting for the full effects to kick in. I recommend asking your psychiatrist about trying out this medication! =]
...

I have been taking Celexa at 20 milligrams for about 4 or 5 years now. I had tried other anti-depressants like Lithium, Paxil, and Zoloft and none of them did for me what Celexa has done. I began to notice a difference after taking it a month or two. I began to feel better about myself and the world around me. I interacted better with my peers at home and at work and especially with my family. I started out at 20 milligrams, went up to 40 after about 2 years, but then lowered it back down to 20 about a year and a half ago, which was great because I got pregnant soon afterwards. It is considered safe enough to take while pregnant and while breastfeeding. I feel more calm and can better handle situations where I might normally feel anxious or overwhelmed by new people or places. On occasion, I would also take a Zanax on the spot, but after getting pregnant I couldn't, but the Celexa has still helped me pull through. The only downside I can say is that I have noticed if...
...

Always seek medical advice for treating depression. For me Celexa has been a wonderful medication. After I had my daughter, my hormones went haywire. I suffered from anxiety and depression. The phychiatrist prescribed celexa for me and it has been a life saver ever since. It does not alter your brain, but it helps to keep your thoughts and moods at an even level. Not too high or too low.

Depression is a horrible disease and no one should have to suffer with it. There are many medications available and for me Celexa was recommended and I have taken it ever since.

I could not function normally without it and would not want to. My family and co-workers think I am just a happy even tempered person. But I know without the celexa - it would be very different. I hope every one can find help for depression in this medication or another one. There are many available - so make sure to get help if needed.
...

manykids says "I am surprised with how well Celexa works." about Celexa (Citalopram)

I was put on Celexa towards the end of June. I was taking an antidepressant already, but developed extreme anxities. I think the anxieties were already there, but assumed they were part of the depression. So my Dr added the Celexa. I was nervous at first. I had read on line reviews that people had awful side effects while they were on and coming off of it. Most people complained about weight gain and that they just didn't feel good. I have not experienced any side effects. Which surprises me. I am usually sensitive to medications and if they have side effects, I usually experience them.

I am feeling much better these days. I am gradually getting better and better. I still have some anxieties, but no where near the level it was.

I wish I didn't need the medication at all, but I was happy my Dr found something that worked on the first try. I have heard of people having to try numerous medications until they find one that works for them.

pitcherday says "Can have bad sexual side effects..." about Celexa (Citalopram)

My husband was prescribed Celexa for his war-related PTSD issues. It worked all right for his depression and anger. The problem is that it caused lethargy and sexual dysfunction. Trading depression for sexual frustration is a wash. No one at the Army would listen to him and prescribed Levitra instead for sexual issues. That did not work, because it was not the problem. He was on the Celexa for 18 months until he was retired.

When he explained his sexual dysfunction to his new doctor at the VA, he said he should go on a new anti-depressant. After carefully listening to his problems, he suggested Wellbutrin. It turns out that Wellbutrin is a non-formulary drug for our health insurance and the Army had him on Celexa because of the cheapness.

We pay about five times more for the Wellbutrin than we were for the Celexa, but I don't want to put a dollar amount on quality-of-life and happiness. Celexa may be OK for some, but not for my husband. He is tons happier on Wellbutrin.
...

Citalopram/Celxa is wonderful. For years we did not know why my husband was so angry, the doc offered him this medicine when his dad was dying. The difference is like day and night. He has become a new and better man. I am so glad the Dr. offered him this medicine . It really works. Before he begain taking this,he would get mad and throw things, and could never figuire out what was making him so mad.No one ever thought of depression. Within 4 years his mom ,dad and sister died ,no wonder he was depressed.Thank God for this medicine. It has improved his whole way of life.We have been able to talk about his anger, and discuss what was bothering him at the .We have never been able to do that before. His relationship with our kids is being restored.Him and his sisters are beginning to get along better,he has even reached out to other family members, cousins and such.It is amazing what one little pill a day can do,it really surprises me .If you or a family member are expering depression, please ,I...
...

I tried many different medicines before I found Celexa (or generically called Citalopram). I was amazed by what a difference it made in my life. Seriously. Medicine though, especially for mental health issues, is a person by person thing. Side effects and dosage can vary based on several things. I took the 40 mg dosage and it has made all the difference, even compared to the 20 mg dosage. Side effects for me personally included decrease of libido and a happier, healthier me! While the first one of these may sound horrible it wasn't as bad as it sounds. I'd much rather have a little bit less of a sex drive than be sad and anxious all the time. Depression and anxiety are becoming more frequently diagnosed in people, whether due to just more awareness or the actuality that more people are having these feelings. Either way it's serious and there's no shame in talking to someone about it or going on medicine. Friends have come to me and asked me questions about being on...
...

I have been taking perscription anti-depressants on and off for over 10 years. When my insurance denied my request for Lexapro, which had been working for me, my doctor perscribed me generic Celexa (citalopram) instead. I have been happy with how it has been helping me. I stopped taking it for a few months while I was pregnant and found myself in a very bad place. I went back on it and have been taking it ever since. I took it through both of my pregnancies and while breast-feeding. While it is not advisable to do so, I haven't had any negative side effects and both of my children are healthy and thriving. I am very grateful that the generic version of Celexa is available as it is affordable and works just the same. I haven't had any negative side effects, though if I forget to take it for 2 days, I do get a bad headache that subsides once I take it. I would recommend this medication to those struggling with clinical depression. It isn't a magic pill or a cure all, but it does help to lift...
...

Celexa is a perscription medication used to treat and manage the symptoms of anxiety and depression. I have suffered with anxiety and depression since I was 12 years old and I have tried many medications to treat this condition. I have been using celexa for almost 5 years now and I think that it works very well to control the symptoms I have. It helps make me less anxious and stabilizes my moods so I am not as depressed. I am currently taking the 60mg dose which is the max dose that is perscribed. This drug is avaliable in 10mg, 20mg, and 40mg pills to make the dosing more convinent. The only complaint I have about this medication is when my MD did try to wean me off this medication I suffered some withdrawl symptoms. I felt dizzy, naseaus, tired, and very crabby. I would reccomend this to anyone that suffers from anxiety and depression. When initialy getting on this medication I did not have any side effects at all but some are possible.
...

I suffer from a lot of anxiety problems, so naturally I went to my doctor a year or so ago. He didn't want to put me on anything too strong, for which I was thankful, and so he suggested Celexa. Celexa is technically an anti-depressant; however, if you have a mild anxiety disorder, it seems to work quite well.

I first started taking a small amount of Celexa for about six months. At first, it was working great. I felt happy - almost euphoric - and I was so much more relaxed. As a college student, I need all the help I can get keeping my stress levels down, and I noticed an improvement in my mood and in my attention span.

However, things started getting a little worse. My mood was a bit darker and I started having trouble sleeping again. I went to see my doctor, and he simply gave me a higher dose. Things started going well again, and I'm pleased to report that I am now back on my lower dosage with no problems.

The cool thing is that my doctor is certain that in a year or so he can start...
...
