Using CFL's (Compact Flourescent Lightbulbs) may be the easiest thing you can do to help Mother Earth. Although initially more expensive to purchase than regular incandescent bulbs, they can make up for it in extended life and lower energy bills. Use these in the lamps that you use most frequently, and you'll help your budget and the environment at the same time. CFL's use less electricity, which means that less coal is burned to produce the electricity (as the majority of American electricity comes from coal-burning power plants), and that means less air pollution and global climate change emissions.

A couple of "cons" that I can think of: I haven't yet found CFL's that function in 3-way light switches, where you can choose from lower to mid to higher light levels. But as these bulbs grow in popularity, I'll bet someone will figure that out and 3-way CFL's may show up commonly on store shelves. As another reviewer noted, they don't work well with dimmer switches (again,...
...

Compact Flourescent Lights are a really great, inexpensive way that you can help the environment! They cost a little more than the cheap lightbulbs, but they last a long time and they use so much less energy. I'm pretty sure they last longer than normal bulbs, so even you may pay a little more right now, but in the long run you're saving money and being green at the same time. As soon as we moved into our apartment, we went out and bought a bunch of these and changed out every light in the house. Sometimes it's really hard and/or expensive to do environmentally friendly stuff, so we're always looking for options that we can actually do. These are absolutely worth it; it feels good to know that you're doing something for the environment, and all this takes is something as simple as changing a lightbulb. Even I can do that! They provide exactly the same light as any other bulb, I don't even notice a difference. I suggest that everyone use these.
...

Why wouldn't you want a lighbulb that last longer, costs you less money and is better for the environment. Over the last year I have been trying to convert all of the lights in my house to CFL's. Some people are "turned off" by the higher cost of CFL's without really understanding that over the course of time this lighbulb will actually save money. On average most CFL's save 45 to 30 dollars in energy bills over the course of their life. CFL's are also four time more efficient and last up to 10 times longer. Other CFL skeptics criticize the quality of CFL's light. In my opinion a CFL's light quality is just as good if not better than a traditional incandescent light bulb. Also, CFL's come in all srts of shapes, sizes and watts. Choosing to but CFL's can be made more affordable by using on-line coupons and rebates that are available all the time. Choosing CFL's is smart and responsible to the environment.

...

Compact flourescent Ligts give good light at a good price. Compact Flourescent Ligting (CFLs) don't seem inexpensive f or the initial ipurchase, but in the long run they are a wonderful investment. Do you have a room, porch or hallway where the lights are always on? I had a laundry room where the pull cord for the light had broken and I was too short to reach it, so that light was always on. We lived in that house for eleven years and we were on our second CFL in that fixture. In the years that we lived in that house we converted the majority of our lighting to CFLs. Our energy bills were reasonable, we lived in SW MIchigan, wheree we paid the same amount year round, so I can't give exact figures, but we paid $150 per month foir gas and electricity, that includes heat and air. Cfls come in almost any size you want, they come in 3-ways. They even are available for canister lighting, but will not work with a dimmer switch in that instance, Environmentally they are an...
...

I'm a big fan of the florescent bulbs for the amount of energy they save and for the long life. I'm short and the less I have to climb on a step stool to change bulbs the better in my book. I do, however, have a couple of issues with them. First of all, if you have any lights on a dimmer switch, don't bother with these...they flicker when they're supposed to be off and do not shut off properly. The 2nd problem I have was specifically with the Phillips brand bulbs...I bought the 3 pack of vanity bulbs (for around $15 or so) about a year ago. Now these bulbs are supposed to last for around 4-5 years. All 3 bulbs had burned out or stopped functioning within 6 months of being purchased and installed. I tried e-mailing Phillips directly through the website 3 separate times and got absolutely no response from them at all. So, now I'm stuck having regular energy sucking vanity bulbs in our bathroom again because I'm not willing to risk being out another $15-$20 to try them again. ......

Being green doesn't just mean using organic products, driving a hybrid or recycling it is also about saving energy. I have been doing my part with trying to use organic products around my yard and I recycle aluminum cans. Then I got greener on a trip to Home Depot last year when I spied a big sale on CFL's all of them were 30% off so I figured I would try some and see how the worked.

The true test

Anyone that has played billiards knows you have to have not only good lighting but also no shadows when your trying to aim. Now my family room has a sloped ceiling so a normal billiard light was not an option and besides I like my ceiling fan. It is a 4 light setup so I got 4 CFL's for it, 2 for the computer room and 3 more for the bathrooms. They are all 40 watt CFL's and are actually quite bright.

I put these in the family room and broke out the old cue stick to test them out. They take about 15 seconds or so to get to their brightest but after that they are great. I now have nice bright light......

I purchased my first CFL shortly after they were widely available in stores, so more than a few years have passed. After experiencing good results with that bulb (until it finally burnt out), I decided to continue with a CFL. I am surprised how much better this new bulb is. The full brightness occurs a lot faster, and the bulb, especially the base, remains cooler than the old bulb did. Factor in the energy savings, and I am extremely pleased with my choice....

If you want to save on your electric bills....buy all compact flourecent light bulbs for your house. You can use them inside & out! It's also one of the best ways you can help our environment. There are so many different ones to choose from, too. There are spots, floods, dimmables, small lamp size & more. I also found blue, green & red ones for Christmas decorating.

Yes, they cost more, at first, but the savings you'll reap in the end is so worth the initial cost. Besdes, you can usually find coupons to use to help. If you don't know what to do with your old light bulbs, think of donating them to your local Habitat for Humanity. That way they won't just go into the land-fill, they'll be recycled and you can take a deduction from your income taxes for the donation.
...
