I have been shopping and doing homework to find the best sewing machine for me since my 8 year-old Pfaff 7530 started having computer problems. I liked the long arm on the Viking 875 and Pfaff 4.0, but the bobbin sensor only came on these models that were "on sale" for $2,000. The Bernina 440QE was more money at first glance, BUT I didn't have to buy extras that were necessary with the other 2 machines that would have cost me another $250. After sewing on the Bernina I knew I had to settle for quality over those other features. It sounds solid, it looks solid and the stitch is better than I have ever seen on another machine. It is easier to guide the fabric and make an accurate 1/4 inch seam because of a little notch that is near the feed dogs and another guide that is out on the plastic table.

I have not tried the BSR feature yet. I am not very artistic and I'm afraid I would need to be to make it look good--but I'm going to try.

Another thing is that it is still made in...
...

I got my Bernina 440 QE last May on sale at the local dealer, and it is the best purchase I have ever made! It has really helped me step up my sewing and quilting. I have been using it nearly every day for the last 6 months, and I don't know what I did without it. If you are a quilter, it comes with all the feet you need to peice and quilt. My applique looks great too. I haven't had any of the tentsion issues I had with my last machine, and everything I make looks professional. I would never hesitate to recommend this machine!
...

I love the BSR and the automatic buttonhole. I hate the tinny sound it makes and after 18 months, it just shuts itself off every minute or so - very frustrating. I'm told it needs a new board of some kind. I'm away from home for the summer but will take it in when I get home. I understand the board is guaranteed for 2 yrs so I'll just make it. Has anyone else had this problem? I've hardly used it
...

I have wanted a Bernina sewing machine since seventh grade home economics class, where they had several and I fell in love! I finally made the plunge last year, picking out the Bernina Aurora 440 Quilters Edition and it is even more awesome than I ever imagined. Yes, they have a heavy price tag, but perfection does not come without a cost. The stitch quality and ease of operation are exceptional. My dealer has been extremely helpful with all of my questions and I have been to several classes at her shop. I bought my machine a year and a half ago and added the embroidery module this year. I am having a blast creating wonderful gifts for my family, friends and co-workers. It has been problem free since the day I bought it and I remember to treat it kindly in return by keeping up with the routine cleaning and lubricating. I would definetly buy another if this one ever fails me.
...

I get to use this terrific Bernina machine when I go to my Mom's house. It's very easy to thread and change the feet on, which is a definite plus.

I'm a quilter that doesn't like to do the actual quilting. When I use this machine I enjoy quilting small projects, table runners and wall hangings. It's very smooth to sew with!
...

I purchased the 440QE last year at a quilt show. I already owned a Bernina but wanted to upgrade to a machine that better suited my quilting needs. I tried the 440QE for several months before my purchase and local quilt store only sells the Bernina...(Thank God) I too wish their was a warning light/sound when the bobbin is getting low. However, I do hear a slight noise just prior to it running out which is helpful but you have to really pay attention and not be listening to your ipod. The stitches are great and the cleaning is easy. Also, I found the BSR to be a bit challenging at first, but with practice, like anything, it works beautifully. I prefer the BSR 2 because I can control the movement of the fabric easier. I use my machine 4-5 days a week and love it!
...

I traded in my new Janome because it was a lemon that had been to the repair store many times and made a trip to the factory only to be told that it was in perfect working condition and must be "user error." Now I have the Bernina 440 and the only complaints I have are that it doesn't warn me that the bobbin is low and I have to get my husband to come and take off the plastic tray as I don't have the strength to yank it off. If I leave it on, I can hardly put in a new bobbin or clean the bobbin trace. Otherwise, the machine hums right along and I've had no problems with tension or thread snapping like I had with the Janome. The Janome was so out of line that I had to move the needle over from 3.5 to 4.0 to get a quarter inch seam. Left in the normal position, the needle would hit certain feet or the plate. For what we pay for these machines, I think we should expect better presision and more respect from the techs that are required to try to fix these problems.
...

I OWN THIS BERNINA AURORA 440 QE. I AM A QUILTER. I LOVE IT. THIS MACHINE DOES ALL THE FINE STITCHING I NEED. I THINK IT MIGHT BE A LITTLE TOO MUCH FOR A NEW SEAMSTRESS, BUT WHO KNOWS. I HAD A KENMORE FOR 100 YEARS AND THOUGHT I COULD NOT PART WITH IT, BUT THIS NEW MACHINE HAS BROUGHT ME INTO THE 21ST CENTURY. I LOVE THE EASY THREADING & EASY STITCH CHANGES. IT CAME WITH A COMPREHENSIVE INSTRUCTION BOOK AND A VIDEO. THE STORE WHERE I PURCHASED SOLD ONLY BERNINA, SO IT IS EASY TO GO BACK THERE FOR INFORMATION AND OTHER FEET.

THE ONLY CON I HAVE IS THAT I FEEL BAD WHEN I GO WEEKS AND DON'T GET TO USE IT. THE PRICE WAS OVER MY BUDGET, THEREFORE I FEEL I SHOULD BE SITTING AT IT AT ALL TIMES. HA.
...

I bought the Bernina 440QE for the BSR which has never worked to my satisfaction. My dealer, which is the only one within 50 miles, is not helpful and when I complain to Bernina I get no response. I much prefer my 13 year old Pfaff which has never given me a moments trouble. I finally convinced my dealer that the machine is defective and that it's not the operator, which was the answer I was given everytime. It took going in, turning on the machine and forcing them to try it. Yes it was threaded right, it had their expensive thread and a new needle. All the things I'd been told I was doing wrong, It still sounds like a bucket of bolts and skips stitches all over. The new update they said would help only made it worse. The needle threader has been replace 3 times and still doesn't work. My husband bought me the embroidery module soon after I got the machine and I now have too much invested in it to give up. But if it comes back from the factory this time not working......

The Bernina 440QE is way overpriced for the features it has (or the lack thereof.) I agree with the reviewer who said it doesn't let you know when bobbin thread is low. Also, it is difficult to reach under the slide-on table to change bobbins or clean the thread race. The slide-on table itself is a pain, as is the accessory box. Having used many different brands of machines, I much prefer Pfaff, Janome, and Babylock for the convenience of access to the bobbin and the built-on accessory drawer that swings out of the way to open up the free arm. Also, for quilters, the Pfaff has a built-in walking foot. This is an optional, but necessary, accessory for quilting and is an extra $150 for the Bernina. The "classes" that one gets with Berninas are merely sales pitches for the extra (and expensive) feet and other accessories that Bernina wants to sell you. Also, Bernina touts their automatic needle threader, but it doesn't actually work, so they have a manual needle threader to sell you to go...
...

While the Bernina has a price tag that may make some people gasp, It is well worth the money if you are someone who uses your machine a lot! My best friend got the same machine 6 months before I did. I used her machine so much (I actually drove 45 minutes to her house to spend the afternoon at her machine) that I bought one myself and have been completely satisfied.

I've had the machine for almost 2 years and have had no problems with it. Any dealer I've seen offers free classes to help you get familiar with all the things your Bernina can do. The Stitch Regulator quilting foot has been a godsend! I highly recommend this product.

...
