I had Bariatric surgery on April 29,2008,and on that day I weighed in at 375 pounds. I am now down to 180 pounds, and I feel great. I STRUGGLED WITH MY WEIGHT ALL MY LIFE, AND TRIED EVERY DIET OUT THERE, BUT WITH FAILED ATTEMPTS TO LOSE WEIGHT. It is not the easy way out, you have to educate yourself on the pro's and con's of the surgery and decide if it is right for you. I had to go through alot of testing, and education on the surgery before the doctor would operate, so it is time consuming. I haven't had any complications so far except for not being to eat certain things, but I can live with that.I was in a size 32 jeans and 5x shirts when I had the surgery done, and now I wear a large in shirts, and 14-16 in jeans. It is a life changing surgery, and to me is well worth everything you have to go through to get it done. I just ask that anyone considering the surgery, get educated first, then make a decision.
...

I had Lap. Roux-en-Y surgery in August of 2007. I have since had a loss of 112 lbs. and I have maintained that loss for over a year.

For someone who has tried every diet known to man and has spent endless amounts of money, bariatric surgery was my last hope. I had yo-yo dieted my entire life and ruined my metabolism. My health was not good and I knew I had to go to drastic measures to regain my health.

RNY is not a surgery to be taken lightly. As with any other surgery, there are risks involved.

It's also not a miracle cure for obesity. There is alot of focus on changing eating habits and exercising. Most patients are instructed to eat a protein rich diet and steer clear of refined carbs and sugar.

RNY patients also have a chance of experiencing dumping syndrome. I personally, like the idea that sugar will make me sick. I had such an addiction to sugar that I needed that reinforcement to keep me away from it.

Bariatric surgery has saved my life and I am now, for the first...
...

A few years ago, a thyroid problem cause my weight to skyrocket to over 400 lbs. Even after treatment for the thyroid problem, I still couldn't lose the weight. I developed sleep apnea and high blood pressure and could barely walk from my car into a store without getting out of breath. None of my clothes looked good on me, and I was tired most of the time. Then, I had gastric bypass surgery, and within a year, I had lost 150 pounds. The sleep apnea went away, my blood pressure returned to normal, and I get compliments all the time about how I look. Not to mention the fun I've had shopping for new clothes! The only "side effect" I've had is that if I eat too fast or eat too much, I throw up. And starchy foods like rice & pasta make my stomach hurt, but it's pretty easy to simply avoid them. I'm still hoping to lose a bit more, but I feel great, look a whole lot better than I did before the surgery, and even if I never lose as much as I would like to, it was definitely "worth it!"
...

I am had gastric bypass surgery March 5, 2008 and have had wonderful results. I couldn't be happier! I have lost 95 lbs. I was 220 lbs at my heaviest on a 5ft. 2in. small body frame. My joints ached and my body hurt all over. I had suffered through 5 knee surgeries.

My knees still give me some pain but nothing compared to before the weightloss.

I would recommend this procedure to anyone who feels that they have tried "everything" with no success in getting their weight to a healthy level. It has truly been a blessing in my life!!!
...

I had bariatric surgery 3 years ago - lost 130 pounds with a bounce back of 15 pounds. I am healthier than I have been in years. Bariatric surgery allowed me to retake control of my life. I can hike, ride amusement rides, plane ride without fear of seat discomfort, feel good about my appearance and play with my kids. My kids are proud of me and glad that I have the energy to play physically with them. Although there are definite downsides such as i can now only eat a small slice of pizza and I need to watch that I get enough protien in it more than makes up for that loss in what the surgery allowed me to take back on. I would do it again today knowing the issues I had which were few and the benefits. It is not for everyone - you have to know that it will be difficult to eat at all for awhile and that when others are eating a plate load you are eating a couple spoons full. But I can go out to dinner and eat that same meal 3 or 4 times after - just order a to...
...

I had bariatric surgery 3 years ago. I had a gastric bypass. I lost 100 lbs of 200 lbs I had to lose. I had it done in another city away from where I live and there was no support for me. I have no clue what I should be eating. They tell you not to drink sodas and eat sweets. I am a sodaholic. I did manage to quit for 6 months after my surgery during which time I lost the first 80 lbs of the 100 lbs I eventually lost. I still can't eat huge meals, but find that now I'm gaining my weight back. I do get hunger pains which the doctors said I shouldn't have. I don't get hungry often. Your not supposed to be able to eats sweet things without getting sick. I don't have that problem....wish I did. Thing is this surgery doesn't fix what is wrong in your head that makes you overeat. If you are a food addict then you need to join overeaters annonymous. If you simply feel hungry all the time and would benefit from a way to limit your intake then this is for you. You......

I had Bariatric surgery 5 years ago and it saved me...from myself. For those of you still in denial about how you got so obese, let me clue you in. You ARE NOT "BIG BONED", "just have a slow metabolism", "have a thyroid condition", or have "Inherited" obesity (there-by giving you the excuse to be fat yourself). Peope who are truely obese are.....by choice. The sooner you take that step, the sooner you WON'T die from weight related complications.

You are obese because you didn't care enough about yourself (for whatever reason- go to therapy for that one) to not kill yourself with your DRUG OF CHOICE....FOOD! I say ALL this as a women who was over 350 lbs. I DO NOT say it as an "ex-food addict reformed", but simply as, hopefully, the most honest communication you might have about the fact that you are obese. You are a food-aholic and so am I....and everyday, I have to wake up and remind myself.."I won't over-eat today". It NEVER gets easier...you simply get to a place where you are more afraid...
...

i had a roux-en-y gastric bypass over 5 years ago. i have maintained a weight loss of 140 pounds. it was extremely painful at first as with any surgery. it was my no means easy. i got sick at first very often til i learnt how to eat again. there was 4 week of a blenderized diet with no food being bigger than half a pea. ive had to relearn how to eat and cook. its a life change not quick fix but is a miracle. i cannot eat anything high in fat or sugar or anything dairy. if i eat starches i need to eat protein with it or it bothers me as well does raw veggies sometimes. i would undo it for the world but its definitely not for everyone and i have to follow up with my doc for the rest of my life. if you are morbidly obese and need help its something to talk to your doc about for sure....

I had the lap band surgery in November 2005 and have lost a total of 70 lbs. Although this is not as much as I had hoped for it is still enough to make me feel better physically and that is good. It took some getting used to for me because I now have protein shakes for breakfast every day...for the rest of my life. I am still trying to lose more but at this point even if I never do I am still happy with my current success. It still takes great control to make sure you do not eat the things you are not supposed to or fall back into old habits like eating when you are not even hungry. You have to have the mindset that this is a life change and you are going to stick with it and the rest seems to fall into place....

I have spoken to many people who have had this surgery. Some of their doctors were awesome and informed them accordingly. Others have lost hair because they were not informed the daily protein intake must remain high(in regulated amounts) otherwise hair etc. will be lost. Please, ask your doctors the absolute musts that have to be changed after your surgery. Your intake of food lessens but you have supplements you must take. ex: B12 and your absorption is lessened therefore you are on liquid alot (at first) for your nutrition. You still have to maintain with protein (just not as much) years later....

First of all, let me start by saying that I am not a professional or someone in the weight loss industry. I am a 57 year old woman who is 5ft 1 & weighed 324 lbs. I had a severe foot infection & was off my feet for over a year. During this time I gained about 150 lbs. I felt that I needed to do something drastic to lose weight before I suffered a heart attack or stroke. I weighed my options very carefully as to what i wanted to do. I decided on bariatric surgery. I checked with my doctor who recommended a surgeon. I checked out the surgeon & got references from his patients. I lived near a great bariatric hospital. I had to go thru a psychiatric exam, classes with the hospital bariatric department & an extensive interview with the surgeon. On June 20, 2006 I had my bariatric surgery. Since then I have lost 141lbs. This has not always been an easy road & it is a commitment you must make to yourself which includes exercise & staying on a regiment of vitamins & proper......

In November of 2007 it will be 5 years since I had Gastric Bypass Surgery. Of course in the beginning it took quite a bit of getting used to, I could only eat 1 scrambled egg and I was stuffed. But the weight was falling off rapidly and I was focused on that. Then I didscovered that I could eat small amount often, and that is where the trouble started. I started eating more, then I would vomit, then it seemed as though my stomach stretched out. Anyway, I stopped excercising as much, then hardly at all. Eating the wrong foods again became habit and about 3 yrs after surgery I had put back on about 30 lbs. to date I have put back on 50 of the 110lbs. that I lost. It almost seems that I am mentally, back where I was before the surgery. So, unless you are really ready to never eat the "Bad" foods and ways again, try other options. Any questions? I would be happy to answer.
...
