kathrine35 says "Completely awesome" about August Rush

This was one of the most amazing films I've seen in a long time. They had the basic boy meets girl, boy loses girl, and boy gets girl back story. But I think Evan's story was the most amazing. He's been without his family and can hear music in anything. Believing he hears his parents in the music and someday that'll bring them all together. It's the age of innocence.

You can't watch this movie without being moved to extreme. The little boy who plays Evan does the job to the point that you almost forget you're just watchinga movie.
...

bkovacs says "The romance and music stopped an hour too soon" about August Rush

August Rush is about music and stars some appealing talent, so it seemed like a good bet, but it turned out to be just okay -- nothing special.

August Rush starts out with the chance meeting of Louis (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and Lyla (Keri Russell) on the roof of a building where there is a party. Louis plays guitar and sings in a band, while Lyla is a talented cellist with a symphony orchestra, so they both have strong musical backgrounds. The two share a magical night, then are abruptly separated in the morning, never to see each other again. Lyla gets pregnant, then believes she loses the baby in a terrible accident. Lyla and Louis get on with their lives but never forgetting about the other. Of course, Lyla has regrets over the loss of her baby as well.

As Lyla and Louis continue their lives 12 years later, on a parallel track is Evan (Freddie Highmore), the child that neither of them knows about. He busts out of an orphanage and falls in with a group of street urchins in New York...
...

skbreese says "Music In The Wind: August Rush" about August Rush

With the majority of films coming out of Hollywood being dominated by sex and violence, it's refreshing to find a family friendly film like August Rush, a charming little film that is nothing more than what it pretends to be; a modern fairy tale, with an appropriately happy ending.

Evan Taylor (Freddie Highmore) is not your average, ordinary orphan. He is a sensitive young boy, who hears music all around him, when others hear only noise. Music is his one solace in an otherwise cold and lonely world. The story of Evan's parents is told in flashback, when his mother, a concert cellist, Lyla Novacek, (Keri Russell) meets his father, Louis Connelly, (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) a singer in an Irish rock band, and fall deeply in love, one magical night. The next day, fearing that Louis will ruin her career, Lyla's father wisps her away, much to her dismay. In a fit of anger, Lyla runs out of arestaurant after a fight with her father, into on-rushing traffic, and is seriously injured. Unaware that...
...

We I saw August Rush on HBO the other day I knew I had to review it. I had wanted to see this movie when it first came out but decided to wait until it came to t.v. in case I didn't like it. The only thing I regret is not watching it sooner. All of the acting is superb, esp Freddie Highmore and the music is wonderful in fact now I'm going to have to buy the movie and the soundtrack to get it out of my head. I think this movie would be something that parents and children could enjoy as long as the kids aren't too little since there are some adult themes. This movie is truly uplifting and I love that it has a happy ending.
...

August Rush is an engaging movie with warm undertones. Robin Williams really is out of this comedy box but manages to gets some good one liners in. Nice to see his dramatic side. The ending is storybook and gives us all hope. A great chick flick!!...

I loved this movie. While a friend pointed out some similarities to Oliver Twist, I do not believe, as he does, that this is a simple retelling of that story. There is so much going on with all of the characters that this move feels rich beyond belief.

...

Caprig says "A Haunting Engaging Movie Despite an Epileptic Editing Job" about August Rush

When we first saw August Rush advertised, it was one of the few times that both my husband and I declared that it was a movie we HAD to see.

Once it hit Netflix, we ordered it and much to my astonishment, I found us both riveted to this movie. As an artist and musician, I found this film to be haunting and delightfully addictive.

The story is about a young orphan boy who is a musical genius in an orphanage. He is mocked because he is different and because he has hope and faith that something good will happen to him despite his horrible circumstances.

The movie then winds through the account of a well known cellist that plays for the Philharmonic who has a chance encounter over night with an Irish musician from a rock band. Through unfortunate circumstances they are forced apart after only one night, but they continue to hold each other in their hearts after that.

The young boy is their love child, and believes that they will come find him someday.

The way that this movie was written was......

This movie was so good! I enjoyed it, but so did my husband and 14 year old son. Robin Williams plays kind of a bad guy, but does it well as he does most of the time. This is a great date movie, or even a family movie. Definitely worth seeing....

This movie was outstanding. Keri Russell has come a long way since Felicity. More mature and her acting is astonishing. The child actor in this movie was great. This kid had such a passion for music he could hear it in everything and he thought that his parents would find him if he could play his music for them to hear. I laughed, I cried and this film made me want to hear music the way he did. It was amazing, definetly 5 stars....

nydrom23 says "True love prevails" about August Rush

I know it sounds cheesy, but it's true, this movie is about true love and how it will always find a way. A young boy, Evan Taylor, is put into foster care when his grandfather takes him from his mother. He grows up there, until he's about 11-12 years old and he believes that his mother and father will find him because of the music. It's cute and it follows him as he runs away to the big city and he finds characters there that help him bring his music out. It is kind of a cheesy movie, and cutesy, but I liked it very much. I think Keri Russel and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers did a very great portrayal of their characters.

I like the ending, too, But I won't spoil that for you!!
...

aruala43 says "Best Family Movie I've seen in a long time!" about August Rush

First of all let me say that others who reviewed this and gave it 2 or 3 stars, apparently only like reality movies. If you don't like fiction, don't watch this. But really, in "reality" how many movies can you say are realistic, since hollywood has deemed romance and love as all ooey, goey and mushy, when in reality it's not quite as feel good as they make it. Anyway, this is an awesome movie and is one of the best movies I think I have ever seen. If you love music, especially guitar, rock music and/or orchestra music, this movie is definitely for you. Yes, Robin Williams does play an unusual character, by that I mean very different then a character I've ever seen him play, but you know that's what makes him such a great actor. The male actor who plays the dad has a cool Irish accent. Of course the little boy is adorable, and Keri Russell is great, not that fake looking slutting woman that hollywood tends to portray in movies, but a natural beauty. Well I could go on and on, but I think......

The ending left me wanting more and a little angry for not getting closure. Overall I recommend this film as a romantic faith driven fairytale....

LauraBelle says "The Music Tells the Story" about August Rush

I never would have thought I could see Robin Williams in a role that would make me hate him as much as I did watching August Rush. He was downright mean ... and mean to a child. It's definitely not the Robin Williams we're used to seeing. The closest he had come to that before was when he was in Good Will Hunting.

Williams takes in young kids into his care, and while it seems at the onset he has good intentions, he really doesn't. A talented musician himself, Williams takes in young homeless kids, runaways mostly, and teaches them to play music on street corners. Any money the kids make gets turned in to Williams' character.

One boy that ends up in Williams' care isn't just a street kid being taught to play music; he's a musical prodigy. An orphan all his life, he refused all attempts at being placed with a family, as he knows deep down his parents are out there looking for him somewhere. Never playing music before, he knows that it somehow holds the key to finding his parents. As he explains......

I loved this movie. I found it very entertaining. The music itself was worth it. I found it funny how one person could ruin two peoples lives, by telling his daughter that her baby had died had ruined both their lives and separated them for too many years. Luckily they had the music to tie them together.

The ending was a bit anticlimatic. I would have loved to see an ending where they were hugging and talking, etc. The ending wasn't bad but I think it could have used a little more spark.
...
