We were having challenges with our home wireless network. We have a mixed Windows/Mac environment with a lot of devices. We stream a lot of music and video. Plus, multiple people due critical Internet-related work from home.

We were having bandwidth/performance issues with our old wireless system. Since we have had such good experience with other Apple products, we decided to spend the little extra $$ to get the Apple Airport Extreme router. We already had several Airport Express devices in the house, plus and iMac and a MacBook.

Long story short, the Airport Express router outperformed even our best hopes. LOVE IT!
...

taddzine2 says "Pretty awesome with one small flaw" about Apple Airport Extreme Router

Just purchased the Airport Extreme. We recently moved to a new city and wanted to have both our computers, one Mac and one PC, running on a wireless system. Previously I was using a AT&T USB plug in. Got tired of paying over $70 a month for that. We signed up for Comcast to be our server. Plugged airport into our modem. Hooked it up and with in minutes both Mac and PC were running wireless. The next test was going to be the wireless printing. I being the mac user had no problems and can print from anywhere in the townhouse. My partner, on the other hand a PC user didn't have the same fortune. Not able to print wirelessly. We contacted an Apple representative, hoping to get some helping resolving the issue. The rep told us that they were more Mac savoy. They told us to download software, Bonjour. After about 20 tries we finally got Bonjour to install. But that still did not resolve the problem. So we can still not print remotely from the PC. All in all given the only problem is that we cannot...
...

drkellermhs says "easy, reliable, but short range, Apple airport extreme router" about Apple Airport Extreme Router

Airport Extreme router was easy to set up on my macBook Pro using the airport utility already on my laptop with OS 10.5.4 2.5 ghZ intel core 2 due, 2GB 667Mhz DDR2 sdram.

My only problem with the product is the weak signal. I cannot get a signal in the room directly under the unit (wood floors) and I cannot get a signal on the front porch - a distance of about 25 ft away. I get a strong signal at the door but once I go outside - nothing, even with the door wide open.

I am currently looking for some way to extend the range as my desk in in that room under the router and it is not a good thing to be without a connection.

On the plus side, the printing via HP deskjet 5500 was perfect and fast. set up was extra simple, same for my remote hard drive a 320GB USB drive.

When I can find a way to extend the signal it will be "extreme" at last.

Apple always delivers on its claims… the public might not always agree, but products ALWAYS deliver! I have used the Airport Extreme Router since January and it is faultless and efficient, stable and reliable on both 2.4GHz & 5GHz settings. I use PCs and Macs on my home network in a large soviet-type building with super thick concrete walls. I use an old PowerMac G4 500 server upgraded to 1.24GHz with 270GGB storage, 128GB graphics card and cable ethernet from the router. The other is a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz, 17" hi-res screen (1920 x 1200) 160GB HD and Extreme Airport card built-in. Marvelous!...

I used to have a Linksys wireless router on my PC, and I had to reset it all the time. It was complicated to set up, and hardly ever worked properly.

I finally became fed up and bought the Apple Airport Extreme. I am well aware of Apple's reputation for excellence, so there was really no question about what I was going to buy. And to seal the deal, it's PC compatible and so user friendly, it only took about 10 minutes to set up. The only problem I have now is with my cable/internet company!

Sure, Apple products are more expensive, but they're more reliable, durable and will last long after their PC competition becomes obsolete. It's more money up front, but less expensive in the long run.
...

I purchased the Apple Extreme Base Station because of the problems I was having with my Linksys g wireless router. I would lose connection more than twice a day, was limited to the distance we could be from the router and had on many occasions called the local ISP to see what might be wrong. This router was located in the room where the computers were set up. Since replacing the Linksys
router and purchasing the Apple Base Station Extreme we do not lose the signal, can be over 100 ft from the router and not lose the signal. Download speeds have been fantastic ad I found it easy to set up, and encrypt. Support has been great on questions that I have had, and is one of the reasons I decided to switch to an Apple desk top computers.
...

This was the first wireless router I was able to hook up my Apple laptop, mac mini, 2 PC desktops, one with Windows 98 and other with ME and two laptops one with Windows 95 and Vista. Now I just have one printer and I am loving it. I might be high price, but speed and distance is great. Service was great with help setting up all computers. Would give 5 stars if not so pricey....

Purchased 2 to set a network in a large house. No web based interface so had to use the airport utility from the mac. One airport was setup as a router with ppoe DSL. The second as a range extender. Had to keep rerunning setup on the second one. Finally replaced with a Linksys N Router and it reached throughout the house for half the price of one airport. when it worked it the speed was very fast. Also you cant clone the Mac address....

I've used wireless routers from Cisco (Aironet), Linksys, and D-Link over the years, and the Apple Airport Extreme is the best by far. I have the early version without gigabit ports, but it still works great on my home network.

The router was very easy to install and I was up and running very quickly. I bought this router while on an extended business trip and originally had it configured as the only router on the network. I now have it integrated with my home network with a LInksys wireless router and a mix of Mac and PC computers, with no problems.

The only problem I've ever had was after upgrading to Leopard. But a quick trip to the Apple Support forum and a reset of the Airport Extreme soon fixed that problem.
...

The Apple Airport Extreme is such a reliable piece of equipment, advanced and really easy to set up. If you are planning to go wireless, this, in my opinion, is the way to go. Setting up is basically plug and play, which means plug it in and begin using it. For the price of the airport extreme, you get a quality product, in which the manufacturer stands behind. I have had my wireless system in place for the last 5 years and have experienced no problems with it since the first day of setting it up. I have to admit that I love all Apple products and have many of them.

The printer may also be set up to use wirelessly, just plug in the cable to the usb port of the airport extreme and anyone can print from the computer(s) within your home.

...

I have been using an Airport Express for a while, and I got the Airport Extreme for my mom - who uses a PC.
I set it up for her last Christmas while we were visiting, and she hasn't had any problems with it since.

The only drawback that we have found is that she can't run her stereo from it (like the express).

It works great for long ranges too - she often sits outside in her yard to surf the net, and there isn't any problem.

It works equally well for Mac & PC computers. She currently has a desktop plugged into it, and runs her laptop - and mine whenever I visit.
...

My linksys WRT54GX started flaking out on me; the wireless connection started to drop enough for me to notice. At first I thought that maybe the card in my PC was to blame but after all PCs on our little network started doing it, I decided to replace the router. I personally can't stand it when equipment half-works... either fail 100% or work! I guess I'm a do or do not, there is no try type...

Linksys WRT54GX

I decided not to get a Linksys for a replacement. I'd only had the router for a year, it didn't even last long enough to become obsolete. In the technology world that is really saying something. It also didn't really work when WPA security was used.. certain sites (usually https) wouldn't work properly (e.g. hotmail). This meant that I was running an open network with the only security being MAC address filtering. Our whole house gets work done wirelessly, and I was starting to receive complaints (well one really-- from Jolie). It was one of the first really nice days this year that...
...

tim says "It really is 5x faster than my last router" about Apple Airport Extreme Router

Being Really Fast Compensates for other Big Flaws

I recently switched from PC to Mac and bought a Macbook Pro. While I was at the Apple store spending way too much money, I decided that I'd drop another $179 to purchase their new Airport Extreme Router. The thought of surfing 5x faster was really appealing, especially since I have had ongoing problems with my home Linksys router.

Once I got the router set up, it swiftly delivered on its promise of fast speeds. The key is the 802.11N standard which is more efficient than the previous B and G. Using a hi-speed cable connection from Comcast, I am routinely clocking in at 3.1Mpbs - which is about as fast as a T1 line! For home use, nothing could be better. YouTube videos and other media used to be unwatchable but now they load in lightening speed. I have gotten very used to my high speeds and would never want to go back. The unit also looks nice and sleek on the desk.

Unfortunately, there are more than a few things I do not like about...
...
