AZRancher says "American Home Shield (AHS) wears you down so you go away." about American Home Shield Home Warranty Plan

We live in the Arizona desert. We've been sitting here for five days in 112-degree heat with a broken air conditioner. The American Home Shield contractor came out, decided the issue was "lack of maintenance," said he "didn't have time" to do (chargeable) maintenance for us, took the co-pay, and left.

We paid for an independent serviceman, who actually examined the unit and found that the 27-year-old drip pan had finally corroded away (which he stresses is an age issue, not maintenance) and water is pouring into the electrical section, causing a shock and fire hazard.

We've called AHS repeatedly to get them to send out a technician who will actually do something, but the story is always "fax us this receipt," "none of my supervisors are available to talk with you," "we don't have any record of receiving your papers," "my supervisor didn't leave me any instructions," "I was out two days this week," and (my favorite) "I'm not the person you talked to before, so why are you all bent...
...

It isn't possible to talk to a company administrator. I got the number for the office phone of one of the vice presidents and when I called him, he hung up on me. Then hid behind a womans skirt by having his secretary call me back to tell me that my claim had been denied without explanation. The administrators are cowards, the service is bad, and the assurances are fraudulent. Incidentally, AHS is currently involved in a class action law suite originating in California. Check it out - San Diego County, California Superior Court. Karon and L.B. Chip Edelson; Case # 37-2007-00071725-CU-BT-CTL.
...

BIGCAP714 says "What a rip off-or is it? " about American Home Shield Home Warranty Plan

I am a long time policy holder of American Home Shield. They recently sent a repairman to my house to fix a water heater that was not producing enough hot water. The repairman informed me that I had to give him a check for $95 (this was $35 when I started with them) before he would even look at it. The problem was sediment in the heater and was not covered by my policy. The repair cost me $275 out of pocket. I have a policy i at my vacation home the the service fee is $ 0 and the service is done by the companies own technicians although the quality of the replacement appliances is "bottom of the line".

I pay just under $50 a month and I only keep the policy because I know that the minute I quit the heating system or the airconditioning system or some other major(costly) item will self-destruct.

If I had the ability to self-insure and actually put the $50 each month aside in its own account ( and not use it because that month I needed some extra money), I believe that I probably woul...
...

sljbaj says "AHS has been good for us." about American Home Shield Home Warranty Plan

AHS has been fine for us. We've never been denied coverage. The contract terms limit coverage for some things (like, they won't put sheetrock back to finish condition, and they don't cover icemakers), but I think every year we've come out about even with the $ we've paid in, one way or another. They are kind of like the HMO of home repair service, in that you have to use their network of tech's and wait for them to come out - and sometimes it's 1-3 days before they can get to you. But we've actually used both the plumber and HVAC tech's AHS sent, to do other work for us, and we like them just fine. I think on websites like this, often most complaints are negative because only those who are unhappy take the time to write something. So I thought I would post an objective, positive review myself. Look, you get what you pay for. AHS is a good, relatively inexpensive way to have some peace of mind for the major systems and appliances in your home. If you don't like it - pay...
...

Nil1 says "WORST WARRANTY EVER!!!!!!!! RIP OFF-- HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE" about American Home Shield Home Warranty Plan

HORIIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!!!

They always send their people to check the problem. Who CHARGES you for looking at it. They don't care if you already have your own technician or repair guy.

In our case they seem to always find a loophole..

The airconditioning was leaking. Their guy came and said that it was installed incorrectly-(like 30 years ago)
AHS didn't have a problem covering the house and taking the previous owners money.
Customer service was horrible!!! They just kept trasferring you. They were not helpful.

We told our realtor to contact them. So after all the hassle- they decided to credit us $500 towards replacing our whole Central ac unit. I'm sure that they would be the ones to install it. $500 does not cover a lot to replace the whole unit. Plus why should I pay more for something that should of been covered.

We called a local guy who was able to fix the problem for less then a $100.

It's really a shame

STay away from AHS home warranty........-!!!!
...

Joebel says "Stay Far Away from AHS !!!" about American Home Shield Home Warranty Plan

I would give American Home Shield NEGATIVE five stars if possible !
AHS should stand for American Home SCAM -- this company exists ONLY to make money for its private investors, NOT to provide quality home insurance service to its customers.

We gave AHS thousands of dollars in premium payments over the years, but whenever something breaks down and we call them, it's ALWAYS a major hassle to deal with their rude and uncaring customer "service" reps, who AGGRESSIVELY enforce AHS's apparent policy of ALWAYS trying to deny or minimize claims.

And the contractors hired by AHS are just as bad if not worse than AHS, apparently colluding with AHS to cheat customers.

Recently, an electrical fixture broke and we called AHS. The tech came and said he needed to get a part for the unit. We had to pay the tech a $55 "service" fee just to come out and look at the problem. He didn't do any work, and didn't bring a ladder so he had use ours !!!

Three weeks passed and neither the contractor nor AHS called...
...

This company sends crappy technicians, and if you aren't vigilant and tenacious in your follow up, it's easy to get consistently bad service. If you complain too much, they drop you from renewing! They send technicians at their discretion and there is no guarantee that once you call someone will call you back or show up to fix your home problem in a reasonable amount of time.
...

ncp says "More hassle and cost than any benefit--and that's on a good day." about American Home Shield Home Warranty Plan

I have paid about $1000 in home warranty payments and service fees; estimated savings $350; net cost $650. So when the fridge's ice dispenser flap starts cycling on and off, with the control panel lights blinking like a Christmas display run amok, I called the place we bought the fridge from. As it's out of warranty, they said they'd have to call Maytag to see whether there's any sort of factory recall--it's only been out of warranty for a few months, but he was pretty sure that it was a bad circuit card. So I say I'll see if American Home Shield (AHS) will cover them coming out to do the work.

I call AHS and say oh, by the way, there's an issue with my washer too, so let's see if it can be taken care of at the same time by the same company. Nope, says AHS, we only have 2 technicians in your area--the Albany NY area, not a major metro area but not podunkville either. And the company--which I greatly like and respect for their expertise--is not on their list of certified technicians....
...
