In my opinion, American Gangster was the best movie of that year. It was a great story with great actors. Denzel Washington plays Frank Lucas, who smugles herion in the United States by planes coming from Vietnam. Russell Crowe plays a detective who tries to catch Frank Lucas and get him arrested for smuggling drugs. Frank gets his whole family in the drug sellling buisness and eventually that's what gets him caught. I don't want tell the whole movie, but if your into gangster movies.. this is a movie to see....

Denzel is great in this movie of course...is there really a movie he is not? This movie shows drive and determination. The characters are very multideminsional. I enjoyed American Gangster, but it did get a little long and drawn out through various scenes. I would definately reccomment this movie to others. I give it a thumbs up and think used in the right context is a good tool to use with our youth to show them that you can go far, but if on the wrong path will eventually turn into a dead end....

American Gangster (2007)

This is another great film by Ridley Scott who continues to prove (to me, at least) he is the greatest working director and the only one who will be remembered fifty years from now when the short list of great directors like Ford, Huston, Welles, and Hitchcock are discussed.

American Gangster tells the story of Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) who begins as a driver for Harlem kingpin Bumpy Jenkins (Clarence Williams, III) and replaces him when Bumpy dies suddenly. Rather than continuing with the numbers game as Bumpy had, Lucas decides to call in a favor from a buddy off in Vietnam. Almost 100% pure heroin is shipped by air freight to NY, courtesy of the US Army... Soon Lucas is the king of NY with the old time mobsters that wouldn't even talk to him before eating out of his hand. He has family members working for him, and that contributes to some of his problems, as you shall see if you see this.

At the same time, a parallel thread is being exposed with NYC detective......

I've always been a Denzel Washington fan, so when this movie came out I of course had to see it. I was not disappointed. Ruby Dee was just awesome as his mother, she played a wonderful matriarch. The whole cast was just great. Also knowing it was based on a true story made it more interesting for me. I was amazed though how violent they could be on the streets so easily -- no one stopped them. This is worth adding to a DVD collection....

I'm not one to watch movies that have any violence just because it is not my thing. But this particular movie despite the fact that it was a movie based on the true life events of a gangster and the mafia it was pretty decent. It was much more enjoyable than I expected. Highly recommend it if you are into movies that have to do with true life events.

I saw this movie with my husband and we were highly delighted. I don't know much about the true gangster , Denzels performance was outstanding as always. one of my favorite actors. Again he gave a top performance and left us wanting more of the superp skills that he possesses. The man he portrays was not afraid to do what needed to be done to acheive the goal he had set for himself. " by any means neccessary" literally. we looked into the soul of a man portrayed by Russell Crowe who fought his own conflicts to catch Denzels character. A MUST SEE MOVIE.

The movie was good. I enjoy movies based on true stories, even though we all know that they may write a lot more than the truth into the movie script. Denzel Washington did an excellent job in this role. As the movie progressed, you get the feeling that all this really could have happened. None of it was so far out there that it was unbelievable.

My only complaint is that the movie was so very long!!!!! We watch a DVD with dinner each afternoon, and this one lasted a full week. It was interesting, but it was way too long.

If you like gangster movies, you will enjoy it.

I saw American Gangster and I am still confused. I didn't get the story line. I read the reviews about that it was a true life story about a real person. Denzel Washington didn't show very much emotion in the movie; he was stone face though out and you couldn't perceive what he was thinking at the time of his actions. I don't know if this was suppose to portray the real character or not. But I didn't like it nor his performance. I thought the movie was a dud. I usually watch movies that I like at least twice. I wouldn't care to see this one again.

This movie was the best!! It actually kept me in my chair wanting to watch more!! I truly enjoy watching Denzel Washington and the others. They all seem to compliment each other!! Truly fantastic movie!!...

Excellent movie - be sure to watch the interview with the real life characters. I could have done without the repititious nudity. I think it was needed to depict the way it really was when preparing the drugs for sale, but over and over was not necessary. Overall, a very good movie....
