My husband and I are constantly reading books. And they are stacked up all over the place. We have favorite authors, and tend to purchase their books when they are released. After researching the various "book-readers", we decided the Amazon Kindle was most likely the best deal around. Then I noticed my boss using one, and she proceeded to show me so many of the features. I decided to order one for a Father's Day gift. I figured we can easily drop $100 at a time buying books - and that is at Costco where they offer a significant discount. So I ordered it,and it arrived quite promptly with free shipping no less. We were both so entranced with the low cost of periodicals and books. And all the free books too. The books download in about 80 seconds, and you get to preview it. If you don't like it, no big deal, you don't buy it. That simple. The newspapers are very affordable, and make it so easy to keep up with the news. And the size and weight! No more heavy novels to tote around. No more...
...

On the one hand I love my Kindle 1... I use it everyday, I subscribe to my favorite newspaper, I mark up my books with annotations, highlights and bookmarks.

On the other hand my Kindle 1 annoys me... unintended page changes, the awkward way I sometimes have to hold it to keep from hitting buttons, the sometimes slow page refresh, and the screen freezes that now has me traveling with a paper clip lest I need to do a reset while commuting on the train.

I've had the Kindle 2 in my hands for almost a day and have carried it on one commute. What follows is my "first impressions" review of the Kindle 2 from the perspective of an owner of the original K1. What's different, what's better and what's worse?

5 big things I immediately noticed as different:

First, when taking the K2 out of the box I immediately noted that the back cover is not easily removable (if at all) and won't slip off in my hands - as was frequent with the K1. The keyboard is also much much smaller and less obtrusive.
...

Antosha says "Soul of the e-reader!" about Amazon - Kindle

I'm a great believer in the e-book concept; having been reading e-books since the Apple Newton (and down through various Palms, Sony Reader PRS505, and Kindle 1). The dream has always been a portable electronic device that could hold a ton of reading material, automate subscriptions and facilitate quick easy downloads, and be as portable, as easy on the eyes, and as intuitive as a book. The Kindle 1 was the first really practical device to get close to that dream. The combination of the reflective e-ink screen, effortless Whispernet wireless cellular connection to Amazon (and the Internet - without requiring hooking up to a computer, ever), and Amazon's tremendous ability to rope in a critical mass of book and periodical content made the promise of the e-reader real for the first time. But the Kindle 1 had some rough edges that got in the way of effortlessly reading. Things like the buttons that made it easy to accidentally turn pages; the separate cursor on the side that could only select...
...

The Amazon Kindel is one of my very favorite possessions.

I am always looking for ways to streamline my carry on items for travel for both work and pleasure. I am the type of person who dreads being stuck somewhere without a good book to read. As a result in my PKD (Pre Kindel Days) I would often travel with 4 of 5 books for a 2 day business trip. As a natural speed reader, and with airline travel in the state that it is in I regularly read all of my books and had to purchase more.

Now I don't have that worry, no matter where I am I can download more books to read. I have only been in one location where it was hard to get a signal, but as soon as I went outside it was fine.

The books are delivered via whispernet, a wireless system that Amazon owns (?). It is quick and nearly fool proof as they give you the chance to confirm all purchases before they take place. In addition you can go online to the Amazon website and order books there as well.

I took to the page turning very quickly and,...
...

I love my kindle 2 and only wish I had more time to read books on it. The photo and text clarity is amazing, and the photo zoom feature is awesome. I love the free books that always come available from Amazon. I also love that I can email and download my own documents for free (I use this feature a lot). Anything to save money helps considering the hefty price tag on the kindle. The kindle is not for people attached to the sentimental feeling of turning a paper page. It is for someone who is never home, needs a lot of books, and likes technology. The kindle has so many features I haven't even learned to use them all. You can't beat unlimited storage either. I've never had a problem with it freezing up which is more than I can say for any other piece of technology I have owned. The battery lasts forever. The audio read feature allows me to listen to a book while driving. Finally, I have found it to be invaluable while working full time and attending college because...
...

Fardreamer says "Kindle is a nifty wireless device that holds 1500 e-books!" about Amazon - Kindle

Perhaps it's almost a cliche to say this now, but ever since I started using computers in the late 1980s, I've known that all the sci-fi stuff about books, magazines and newspapers going from paper to electronic form seen in Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey would eventually come to pass.

As the Analog Age of electronics has given way to the Digital Age and more people of all ages become more comfortable with such devices as Apple iPods, desktop and laptop computers and hand-held personal digital assistants, such once far-out concepts as those electronic clipboards and NewsPads seen in the aforementioned 1960s TV and film science fiction classics are now 21st Century realities.

Indeed, in some cases, some of those devices have become more than just electronic conveniences or luxuries - they are, to many people, becoming necessities.

The Amazon Kindle 6" Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)

khn says "a must have for any book lover who travels" about Amazon - Kindle

I'm a new Kindle 2 owner and I did not own a Kindle 1. I was very interested in the original Kindle, but had decided to wait for improvements based on customer feedback after it was released, especially the accidental page turning issue. Since it looked like they made the improvements I was waiting for (one of the others was a bit more free space on the case to hold it) I took the plunge and got the new one.

I thought I'd start with listing my reasons for getting the Kindle, since I think that can sometimes help others who are sitting on the fence to decide if it's for them or not.

* Saving Money. While the cost of the Kindle up front is steep, in the long run it will pay for itself and save me money since I read on average 4-8 books a month. With the free classics available it's also going to encourage me to expand my reading material, for no additional cost.

* Environment. The majority of books I buy and read I'll only read once. I feel guilty about the trees needed to make the paper...
...

debby13 says "Amazingly in its Utility" about Amazon - Kindle

I received an Amazon Kindle for my birthday three months ago. It was a product that I had been thinking about for awhile, but the cost held me back. It was $349 at that point in time (it is now $299) and I could not be certain how much I would like it.

The Kindle is a device that downloads books using its own internal wifi. It can only download books from Amazon.com. The books run about 25% less expensive than the cover price of a regular book. There are a limited number of books available - not every book is available for Kindle.

The Kindle is light, attractive, easily held with one hand by anyone. The text is adjustable and is easily read. The screen is viewable even in sunlight. The screen is NOT backlit, so you will need a light source. The controls are easily managed for anyone with basic computer/mobile phone/mp3 player skills.

I have been delighted with my Kindle. If one accidentally orders a book, it can be canceled immediately, which is a nice touch. One can get samples of books...
...

Read even more than you thought you would-it's so easy! The kindle is very user friendly so you can use it within minutes of getting it. The ability to change font size and choose the male or female voice and the rate of speech to have it read aloud is fantastic. It is replacing my pod for audio books as it reads aloud most anything. There are so many free books, I have yet to download anything costing more and a few dollars. There are many current free downloads available for a limited time so you do need to check what is available weekly. Join a discussion list or monitor the postings at the amazon site at the bottom of the pages in the kindle store. One feature I did not know it had when I bought it is rudimentary net access so one can the net to go to any url you type in on the small keypad. Already preloaded are many often used web sites so you can get used to using it before you personalize it to your favorite urls. Is it cost effective? There is no monthy fee for net access so the...
...

I bought my 1st generation Kindle back in August of last year. I've had it almost a year and it goes EVERYWHERE with me. I am definately a bibliophile. I read ALL the time. I read on my breaks, when waiting at the doctors office, etc. I easily read 4-8 books a week. I love the kindle. I can carry about 1500 books on it for the weight of one book. Anyone who reads a lot understands the value of that. Books get heavy quickly.

I haven't upgraded to the Kindle 2 or the Kindle DX simply because: (1) my kindle still works beautifully, and (2) I like the fact that the 1st generation kindle has an SD memory card slot under the battery cover on the back and the newer generation ones don't. I am going to buy my 17 year old, who reads like I do, one for christmas, but I will be going to ebay to buy a 1st generation one for her so that she will also have that SD card option on hers.

I'm an avid reader, but was a hesitant e-reader. As my S.O. says, "I like the feel of paper." I can't argue with that; however, I can read my Kindle and eat at the same time without getting the "pages" greasy or having to figure out how to eat with one hand and read with the other. It is easy to see, the type size is adjustable if you have difficulty reading a smaller type size, and you can upload your MP3 tunes to use as background music at the same time you read! There are tons of FREE books you can download (some are only available for a limited time, so if you see something you like, snag it!) and downloading is super quick via "Whispernet." You can also subscribe to magazines and newspapers. If you fill up your Kindle (it has a huge amount of room), Amazon keeps the volumes you buy from them, so you can delete them from your unit and yet still not "lose" them. If you come across a newspaper or magazine article you'd like to save, just let 'em know you want to save it...
...
