In the famous lyrics to the hymn 'Amazing Grace', it reads "I once was lost, but now am found". There is much to be found in the world history of slave trading -- death, money, villains and heroes.The movie 'Amazing Grace' delves into the struggles of a true larger-than-life hero named William Wilberforce, who finds his calling in life by relentlessly fighting in the English Parliament for decades to stop the English slave trade.

Ioan Gruffudd holds our attention as the young Wilberforce greatly possessed by his convictions and haunted by the images of slaves pleading for freedom. His good friend William Pitt, the youngest prime minister ever elected in Britain's history, was brought to life by Benedict Cumberbatch, a young actor with a very mature and intoxicating voice. These two fine actors are complemented by a fine cast of Albert Finney (who plays John Newton, the lyricist of Amazing Grace), Romola Garai, Youssou N'Dour (film debut), Michael Gambon, Rufus Sewell, Ciaran Hinds...

I am a Christian who eagerly awited the release of Amazing Grace and went to the theater to watch it with my best friend. She fell asleep and I ended up feeling irritated and empty. The movie itself wasn't bad but it lacked God, to be blunt. There are few movies released in theaters these days that are even suitable for Christians but what can be even more irritating is when there is so much potential to glorify the work of the Lord in so many lives, on our history and on the legacy of nations and God is mentioned often as an after-thought. It's like throwing the Christians a token by-line in order to get the backing of 'Christian', 'Family Friendly' stamps of aproval. I find it insulting and aggrevating that we have sold ourselves so short when the story had so much potential....

This movie is very informative, but it comes across like a documentary.

There were a few good scenes, but the dialogue came across as a little dry.

It could have also been a little shorter.

It was a good story, but I wish it came across as exciting as the material actually is.

Still an inspiring film.

Usually a movie about history messes up because they get it wrong and when they get it right it is boring. This movie did not mess up. It is spot on with the history and it is any thing but boring. The casting is superb and the acting is awesome. The movie moves at a good clip and has a little bit of erverything in it. The mix of morals vx evil was good. If you like history and love politics you must see this movie....

This was one of the most unadvertised, but most wonderful movies I have seen in a long while. If you do the research on the song "Amazing Grace" and then watch this movie. Well, it will mean so much more to you. Gone are the days of a GREAT story in a movie, not surrounded by cars blown up, nudity, and foul language. This is a throwback to what it is like to have just a good script and good actors to bring it about. It is also so woderful to see something that does , as one reviewer put it, "stirs the soul". Hollywood has thrown us in the abyss with what they produce as "the norm". This movie just shows us how far down that trail we have let ourselves be led. ...

Amazing grace was done well though I must admit that I expected to get more info on the writer of the song than it portrayed. Overall, a ni ce movie for the family to watch. Clean and thought provoking....

My husband gave me a DVD of this movie as a Christmas gift because the night we went to the theater to view it, they were doing some screen repairs and we were unable to see it then. This was an enjoyable movie to me as there seems to be such a lack of "clean" movies to watch nowdays. This is based on the true story of the many-years struggle of William Wilberforce to abolish British slavery. His minister was John Newton who penned the famous hymn, Amazing Grace. Newton was haunted with his own "ghosts" of the slaves he traded before finding the amazing grace of Jesus Who "saved a wretch like" him. While watching this, I could see the correlation of how some individuals today view gambling, porn and other such establishments as merely "jobs" to help the economy, rather than the "poison" it actually creates within our communities. Wilberforce faced opposition to abolishing slavery because of the impact on the slave traders income. The inhumane treatment and sometimes...

This was one of my favorite movies. It's realistic and down-to-earth, insightful but not overly preachy, and there are some really funny and sweet moments. It's also very poignant. If you know anything about the history of slavery in Britain (or don't) and if you're interested in social issues and thoughts that matter, this is a great film. ...

This movie was so inspiring -- we went and looked up some more history on William Wilberforce and the abolition of slavery. Except for a few curse words when viewing the slave ships and some others, this was very family friendly. It had no undue violence and it even had some romance without the usual sexual scenes / innuendo. A good movie for families with older children, and anyone who wants to see what even just one person can do if God has called him to action....

Amazing Grace tells the story of an extraordinary man who follows his convictions despite many setbacks and a physical disability. It's a story about standing up for what you believe. A dynamic politician, William Wilberforce worked for over 15 years to have the slave trade outlawed in England. Along the way, he had many doubts about what he should do with his life, and he found inspiration in a group of abolitionists (& colorful characters in their own right) who also worked tirelessly for the cause. One of Wilberforce's mentors was a former slave ship captain turned monk, who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace" - hence the movie's title. One of the movie's producers was Patricia Heaton of "Everybody Loves Raymond" fame. It's very well done - informative, interesting, and inspiring....

I have been amazed by "Amazing Grace" since I saw it in the movie theater. Now that it is available to own, I am thrilled to have it on my shelves. The most powerful aspects of this movie are the fantastic, witty dialogue, and the intense yet tender character development. The screen shots are incredible, as well as the costumes and the overall "feel" of the time period - early 19th century. The movie transcends the standard historical movie by speaking of things that still resonate with the viewer, such as justice and honor and cruelty. I highly recommended this movie. Whenever I watch it, it inspires me to act, to do more for not only those around me, but the world. It is a movie of passion and hope....
