A Thousand Splendid Suns written by Khaled Hosseini was quite an interesting read. I listened to it on CD and Atossi Leoni did an excellent job of bringing the whole story alive. Her accent alone made the book more real for me. I knew very little about the history of Afghanistan. The story is interwoven with the history of Afghanistan from the Soviet intevention through the post-Taliban rebuilding. Like many of Amy Tan's stories about China it gives you an upclose and personal view of what has happened to the ordinary citizen in Afghanistan. In particular it gives a woman's view as to how they were treated in this country by certain men. A very sad state of affairs! It was significant that the two women who fought literally for their lives banned together for the sake of the children.

Not only was the history interesting but the story line kept your attention. It was of course a classic love affair with a pregnancy to one man and a marriage to another. This however was the only many women...

I am an avid reader. I will read anything and everything. Of all the books I've read, A Thousand Splendid Suns is one of the best books I've read in the past 5 years. It is so wonderful. I usually think male authors really struggle to tell a story from a woman's perspective, but not in this case. You feel every emotion, and the book is impossible to put down. I've already loaned it to three different friends. Read this book now!

To tell you the truth, I really had no desire to read "A Thousand Splendid Suns". The book was given to me by another avid reader. I thought I would try it and if I could not get into it then I would just give it up.

Sooo, I started the book and BOOM! I was totally sucked right into the book.

I found this book totally engrossing and riveting. I kept wanting to keep reading and never put the book down until it was done.

The storyline keeps you so engrossed and the characters are full of life and easy to picture and identify with. What a spendid book, storyline, and everything! I totally enjoyed it.

A Thousand Splendid Suns was a great read- interesting characters, gripping storyline, and fascinating cultural insights. This book follows a woman named Mariam and a woman named Laila through an intriguing cultural piece. Laila was raised by parents who were ahead of their time. When a disaster hits her family, she is forced into marriage with an extremely strict man who is already married to Mariam. An extremely unlikely friendship ensues. While comparable, I would venture to say that as a follow-up to The Kite Runner, this book falls short. It is less memorable, but still captivating. A definite must-read!

Khaled Hosseini two books are both amazing and will stay in the reader's mind long after the books are finished. A Thousand splendid Sun is a very good story but sooo sad. It seem to go up till conflicts are so unbearable and impossible to be solved. The wives seem to be doom for eternity and suddenly the mean husband died and the old lover came back and everything is alright. Seem easy right?! It can be developed more, I think, but great story nevertheless....

A thousand splendid suns was a page turner. Although, it was very different from most of the books that I normally read, I found it to be intriguing and a great read....

This book is an amazing achievement by Khaled Hosseini. His second novel was, I found, far superior to his first.

The two protagonists of the story are highly rounded characters that you quickly fall in love with. The two women have inspriring strength. Great insight by the author.

I was expecting a lot from this book after having read and very much enjoyed the Kite Runner, but it surpassed my expectations. I never read books twice, but this one is in my list for the next few books I will read

A tragic story that leaves you with a good feeling due to the sheer heroicness of the two women.

A very good book! Such a different world than what I am accustomed to. So sad and harsh is their world. Well written and informative book giving a glimpse into how things may be elsewhere in the world....

This book was great. The author was better for known for his first book which recently became a movie, "Kite Runner". I love his writing capabilities. The stroy line here is so realistic that one could easily see themselves in any given character. Please give us more!...

This new book by Kahled Houssini was great! It was a page turner from beginning to end. Very well written and poignant and the story kept you interested throughout. I love the style of writing here and the awesome truths about living this kind of life in this far away land. A great read and by a great author....
