I was really looking forward to this movie coming out on DVD, but it ended up that they had showed every interesting part in the previews. Who knew a movie with MeryI Streep and Lindsay Lohan could be so dull and lifeless. I let it play for quite awhile in hopes that it would pick up speed. It didn't. So slow, so boring. So not worth it....

NDS says "Good actors; Strange, hard-to-follow plot." about A Prairie Home Companion

I wasn't really sure what category this movie belonged in: Fake documentary, quasi-supernatural, coming of age/understanding adults...Little bit of everything.
It's been awhile since I saw this movie but I remember that the plot left you unsatisfied and, at times, confused. I like the cast, plus or minus a couple people, but really, kind of a strange movie....

Waste of talented actors like Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, etc. The movie wasn't surreal enough to be quirky. The story was bizarre and not in a good way. The mysterious character remained just that; never did figure out who or what the girl in white was.I'm not a big Robert Altman fan, but unlike his other films that are at least watchable, this one wasn't.

Do not recommend.

...

AmyA says "Public Radio...fun on a Sat night (not the movie)." about A Prairie Home Companion

I have been going down to my parents home on Saturdays to help out and drive back in the early evenings. I like to like to listen to the radio, but was getting tired of the music I was listening too so I thought I would do the old flipping of the stations.

I have seen the movie "A Prairie Home Companion" and knew that it was a old radio show, but didn't know it was still on. So I thought I would take a listen in and see what is was about via the radio.

I am hooked! I laughed I cried and now a huge fan of this show. It airs on Saturday nights (Please check your local Public radio for listings or their schedule on this web site: http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/). (you can even listen from their website and bring up older shows too. In the Milwaukee/Appleton, Wisconsin (where I listen) it is on Sat nights live, re-broad casts on Sunday.

This show is a variety show with humor, music (from the show and artist invited), poems and much more every single week. Garrison Keillor, author...
...

egyptianmonkey2 says "Great Cast....Bad Movie" about A Prairie Home Companion

The cast of this movie is great. With the legandary Meryl Streep and the hilarious Lily Tomlin you would think that this would be a great movie. However, it is quite the contrary. This movie is boring and the radio show is very boring and almost puts you to sleep. The underlying plot of the the troubles between and mother and her daugther is one of the best parts of this film, but it is not really brought into the forefront. The singing is good but the songs are not. This is not the best move and I don't really reccomend it....

As an NPR listener and fan of Prairie Home Companion and Garrison Keiler, in general, I found this film to be largely disappointing. Altman has done wonders with ensemble casts (e.g. Nashville, M*A*S*H), but this is not one of his exemplary works. The film drags on, the storyline is inane and unnecessary and the ending in unsatisfactory. All in all, I'd save my money and go see a live show of Prairie Home Companion, any day.
...

As anyone knows who has regularly read my reviews knows I am a habitual NPR (National Public Radio) listener. Those of us who listen and are members of our local Public Radio stations have our favorite shows, but A Prairie Home Companion which airs every Saturday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. after All Things Considered Weekend Edition, is not one of mine. I find the program just a touch too cutesy and boring for my tastes.

And so I was a bit surprised when it was announced the a movie would be made from the rather bland radio broadcast (staring) the real live host Garrison Keillor who has a face that was most certainly made for radio.

Helmed by acclaimed director Robert Altman (Kansas City, Dr. T and the Women) and written by Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion takes place in a night as the last broadcast of the show takes place. The cast above fills out the on-air performers: Woody Harrison (Dusty) forms a C&W duo with John C. Reilly (Lefty); Meryl Streep (Yolanda Johnson) is...
...

I like Robert Altman, but not every movie he's ever made.

I am not a big fan of the radio show--though I guess you could say I respect it and appreciate the tradition Garrison and others are continueing.

I do not like Country Music.

As the move went into production-- and I wondered why Altman was doing this one first rather than a film centering around the ART world which would be a nice follow up for his fine film about the dance world; The Company.

I asked a friend about the radio show and some of the recurring characters so that when the movie came out, I could GET it. You really don't need to know much about the radio show except that there are some odd characters that pop in and out.. and that happens in the movie. Don't let it throw you.

Robert Altman's A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION is a warm, affectionate, smooth brew of a movie that many will be utterly charmed by. I found dozens of moments in the film that made me smile and you'll probably have a few more if your a fan of Garrison...
...
