Friends, geeks, film lovers, lend me your ears;
I come to bury 300, not to praise it;
The evil that men do lives after them,
The good is oft interred with their bones,
So let it be with 300 ... The noble reviewers
Hath told you 300 was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath 300 answered it ...
Here, under leave of The Hollywood Reporter and the rest,
(For The Hollywood Reporteris an honorable site;
So are they all; all honorable reviewers)
Come I to speak of 300's stupidity ...
It was a stupid and mindless film to me:
But reviewers says it was ambitious;
And reviewers are honorable folks....
300 hath brought many near naked men to the screen,
Whose claim was that they were Greek:
Did this in 300 seem ambitious?
When that women have cried that adventure was boring?
Ambition should be made of manly stuff:
Yet reviewers say that 300 was ambitious;
And reviewers are honorable writers.
You all did see that on the screen
The story teller did talk like a pirate,
Which he did lose an eye......

GeorgeChabot says "Bogus as a Three Hundred dollar bill: 300" about 300

300 (2006)

This movie is a version of the 300 Spartans story that comes from a comic book by Frank Miller. Now why Frank Miller had to deviate from the historical story which is interesting enough itself is a question that occurred to me. If he were going to tell a different story, why didn't he just make it up. Any ten year old boy who liked playing war would know enough about the 300 Spartans to know the Persians were not Africans, yet that's what Xerxes was. He also was festooned with enough strings of gold chain, piercings, and face makeup that his sexual orientation was questionable. This was also the case with several other Persians yet the Spartans were all butch and looked like they were recruited from Gold's Gym.

I have to say that the action was pretty good but it was all Computer Generated with fake backgrounds making it look almost like panels from a comic book. When you are doing a moving picture it seems like movement would be desirable yet they often used the comic......

the movie 300. like in my bite wait till you see them. the movie dose have blood and ancient Greek war fare techniques that they have acted out. also the effects to make the battle scenes are up their to. the movie as a whole had the action fighting with some other plots woven in. going to battle not knowing whats going to happen and if this was the right decision ext ext. the other good thing about this movie is that is dose have historical roots. i was watching the movie and realized that what Hollywood did was about the same as the ancient Greeks did when tell stories ext. the movie was enjoyable but not one to watch over and over. once can last you a month if not longer....

First thing I have to say is, I don't usually like movies based on comic books. I know, this is a "graphic novel", which to me means "a fat, pretentious comic book". After I saw the movie, I got the "graphic novel" from the library out of curiosity. The movie is way better, trust me girls! No love scene in the book. Gorgo barely gets a panel. She might as well not be there at all.

Anyway, since I'm too cheap to go out to the movies, and DVDs have all the nifty extras, I was really looking forward to this one. Big Gerard Butler fan here. And muscles. I really like lots of muscles! All the CG stuff, who cares? All stories got to have a STORY, right. How it gets told is secondary. Who's lookin' at the scenery anyway, there are MUSCLES! Not just great looking muscles, but useful, slo-mo fighting almost like dancing muscles. Scene 14. Need I say more?

While this movie is about the 300 Spartans giving all for their country, that is just on the surface. The real......

I am not a lover of war movies, but the visual effects, costumes, acting, and yes love story, was perfection at it's best!

I have bought the movie and loaned it out to many friends! Gerard Butler is so what you would imagine King Leonidas to be. If only all men could be raised Spartans...LOL!

Great movie to watch with date or spouse. Wouldn't recommend to those under 17, has sexual content and nudity.

...

maerti says "SPARTA!!!!!!!!" about 300

I give 300 a B. It's worth a watch. Really. But it's not for those that dont like gore, blood, and violence. So, if you see it, be prepared. And, if you are prepared and know what you are getting into, you may just like it.

300 recounts the 480 B.C.'s Battle of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartans took a stand against the invading Persian hordes. Led by King Leonidis they fend off legions of very freaky attackers-- which get worse and worse as time passes. While nearly the entire 2 hours focus on fighting, you find yourself cheering for these 300 heroic men that support their belief systems and want to defend their land.

There is also a subplot involving the political issues of being a woman back in Sparta-- led by Leonidis's Queen. As a woman, I appreciated that subplot and was happy with how it all played out.

Again, worth a see in my book.
...

So here is the basic scoop on "300" (in other words, this is why I hated it):
1) No Characterization at all - I won't really call it bad acting because since the actors didn't have squat to work with (this is most important to me because I am first and foremost, when it comes to film and theater, an actor).
2) Narrator - I don't need my intellegence insulted by some dude explaining to me what I am watching
3) American Freedom cliches - enough said
4) I suppose that the cinematography was alright - the fighting got old after about 10 minutes, though - spartan flips persian (or various kinds) over his shield in slow-mo, stabs him in slow-mo, and then blood sprays everywhere in slow-mo - After a while I thought the fighting was just being looped
5) Totally predictable - enough said...

300 is a movie based off history.(True History) The setting of the movie which contained the dreary off colored sky, Sparta itself(the little that was shown )along with seas mountains etc. made the film very lifelike. All of the strange characters such as Xerxes,the giant Immortal ogre from Asia and the horrible guy with the sawblade arms, who cut off one of Xerxes generals were awesome special effects combinded with human bodies.There was also the strange guy who defected to the Persians and enjoyed the pleasures of Xerxes wierd herem . Too there were the three Ephors and thier Oracle to add to all of 300s interesting characters. The overall plot was great:the actors were suited for thier roles:Queen Gorgo and the Oracle were nice to look at;especially in contrast to Xerxes' herem. Overall the movie was great,but I wish I would have watched it on Imax....

300 does so much for so many different reasons. Visually, the movie creates an atmosphere that's unlike others. Of course, this effective atmosphere can be credited to the use of great visual special effects throughout the film. To compliment the effects are actors like Gerard Butler who make you feel the challenge faced by King Leonidas and the rest of the 300 Spartan warriors who sought to defend their nation against Xerxes and his Persian invaders. While the movie easily earns its R rating due to the graphic content of the fight scenes and the occasional nudity, the rating does not diminish the powerful storytelling as the movie engages the audience from start to finish. The movie serves to not only create a stunning visual masterpiece, but it furthers the viability of movies based on comic book properties. What many movie-goers didn't realize while watching this film is that 300 is the product of one of comics' great talents, Frank Miller. Frank Miller created the graphic...
...
