k9ace says "Do you really want to know why vets recommend Science Diet?" about Hill's Science Diet Light Formula Canned Canine Maintenance

Science Diet is not a bad dog food. There are dogs out there who have had problems with it, but there are also dogs who have had problems with other dog food brands as well. — The main reason that you see this food in your vet's office, is because Hill's, the company who makes Science Diet, has vets promoting it, in exchange for little "freebies" that they are given. — Hill's have their fingers in almost piece of the dog industry. I was in the Air Force (the largest professional, commercial dog kennels in the world at Lackland AFB, Texas), for 15 years as a K-9 handler. The military dogs were fed a special food, made by Hill's, that was made exclusively for them. This food was not available to anyone else, not even private veterinarians. The dog food was high in calories and medicated with heartworm preventative. Everyone just assumed that these dogs needed a high calorie food, because they were, after all...

k9ace says "good dog food and not expensive" about Pedigree Small and Crunchy Bites Dog Food

Pedigree makes an excellent product. They do a fantastic job at keeping the prices down. — I began feeding Pedigree as I started to accumulate more dogs, through rescues. I loved the food I had been feeding, but with more dogs being added to the pack, I had to find a way to cut costs; and Pedigree fit the bill there. — Pedigree is not the most exensive dog food, but they are not the cheapest either. I cannot honestly say that it is the BEST or the WORST dog food, as that label depends on the individual dog owner. It all depends on your own likes, dislikes, what you are trying to accomplish by what you feed, and your finances. — Some of those dog foods that cost over $40 a bag are not necessarily better, just because they cost more. I will, however, caution owners to make every effort to steer away from those really cheap, generic brands that not many folks have not heard of. Those usually contain more fillers and not much...

k9ace says "very intelligent, too intelligent!" about Boxer Breed

The Boxer breed is a great dog. This breed is highly intelligent. They learn obedience very quickly, much faster than most breeds; Shepherds, Labradors, Aussies, and Border Collies. One thing though, they also can be quite stubborn. — I am a dog trainer and I started seeing Boxers come through my obedience classes about five years ago. Right away, I noticed how smart they are, but also how stubborn they are as well. You can tell just by watching them, that they know what they are supposed to do, they can do it, but they wil test their owners, to see just how much they are going to get away with. — This breed demands an owner/handler that is going to be a strict Alpha personality. If you give this dog an inch, they will take a mile. When training/working with this dog, you cannot back down. If you tell the dog to do something, he MUST be made to do it, otherwise you will soon have an non-obedience...

k9ace says "very tasty, but high in calories" about Milk Bone Original Dog Treats

Milk Bones are a great way to treat your dog. You do want to be careful with them, however, as they are very high in calories. What I used to do when I first got my dogs, is that whenever I would leave the house, for work or whatever, I would crate or kennel the dogs, and give them each a treat, and talk to them, saying "I'll be back soon." This way they learned not to stress themselves out, from being left alone, and also that when they got a treat, it meant I was coming back soon. So they learned they were not being abandoned. — I do not recommend using these as treats for training. You should reward a dog in training with PRAISE, as a dog will work for YOU so much better than he will work for food. And remember what I said earlier, these treats are VERY HIGH in calories, so if you plan on treating your dog a lot, you may want to consider cutting back a little on his daily food ration; after all, you don't want an...

k9ace says "dogs are dogs, it's people who make or break them" about American Staffordshire Terrier

This breed of dog is so unfairly discriminated against, as are all the other breeds making news today. If we as a society are not careful, those anti-dog folks will make it illegal for us to own dogs; think PETA, the biggest anti-dog organization around. — I am a dog trainer of 30+ years, and an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) evaluator. I have had this breed in my obedience classes and the dogs are a pleasure to work with, responding so nicely to anything that is asked of them. — Any dog has the capability to be a "dangerous dog." But one must understand, it is the people that make the dogs this way. If you warmly accept the dog into your family (pack), and you make an effort to understand the dog and train him, then you will encounter very few problems. — I strongly encourage anyone with this breed to seek out a competent trainer who can train and test you and the dog on the CGC test. Then when you have your certificate,...
