A credible rival to MS Office, OpenOffice.org includes powerful applications for making text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams, and databases, as well as HTML and XML documents. Not only does it let you edit basic documents, such as letters and faxes, it also handles equations and complex and multipart documents with bibliographies, reference tables, and indexes.

The interface is similar to that of MS Office, and even advanced Office users will find almost everything they're used to: templates, collaborative features (versions, recording changes), macros, and even a programming language. OOo, as it's known, lets you open and save documents in formats as diverse as MS Office formats, PDF, HTML, and XML. It can also import files from those formats, as well as WordPerfect and others. However, it normally saves files in the open-standard Oasis OpenDocument XML format, for maximum compatibility with other applications.

cNet has lots of software that you can download. I always get the FREEsoftware. My two favorite downloads have been cCleaner and AVG virus scan.

I dowloaded cCleaner to help my coomputer run more efficiently. This software can clean out the cookies and the cache as well as a lot of other things that slow you down. It is easy to run and very fast.

I also downloaded AVG Virus Scan for FREE. This software actually runs a full virus scan on my whole computer and lets me know if there are any problems. This scan does take a long time...so I suggest you schedule it at a time when you will not be using your computer for several hours. I do it in the early hours of the morning while I am asleep.

cNet has more software programs available for FREE than I know how to choose from. I usually only get software that others recommend, since I am not sure what to choose myself. It is a trusted site and has a very good reputation.

Good grief. When I Google or Yahoo or even got to Suite 101 and click on links, I go to sales pages or the AT&T link page. It seems I have a browser hijacker and more, and Norton AntiVirus does not fix it, unless I pay them $139.99 or so they tell me.

I checked online, and Cyber Defender has 5 stars and 95% satisfaction. The link does not go to the page to see what actual users rate. What's up with that. And, another red flag is that Cyber Defender is marked, at the top of that list, as sponsored. Not cool.

Desperate, I decided to try he free "scan." The operative word here is SCAN or perhaps that should be SCAM. I hit that download, and Cyber Defender did, for sure, do something on my computer.

Then, I got a screen that notes I have issues. Well, duh . . . yes I do.

So, you see, it's a scan but not a fix. You don't get something for nothing. Fine. The advertising is very misleading I think. Or, perhaps I'm a sucker.

My computer not only had the brower hijack trojan (I think) but also two...

Sold my Apple Macbook Unibody for $650.00!!!

I was seriously thinking on eBay but didn't want to the the risk. I did some research and this website was the one that offered me more and also seemed to be reliable beacuse of the BBB certification.

I was skeptical at the beginning to be honest, but I spoke to a representative that gave me peace of mind. I shipped my laptop, next thing I got a check for $650.00!

I would have never sold my laptop for that much anywehere! not even on eBay!

I totally understand now why this company has kept such a clean record!

Kids and Cell Phones:Something most parents debate!
I first read the review that another person wrote, then looked at the site. I felt like there is a lot more information out there that I would of like to read about ,that this site didn't cover or barely touched upon. Such as a program I have heard about where you can actually see a map of where your child is, I wanted more information on this program, how it works and who offers it? They did mention another type of service, but not this one. I live way out in the country and my kids have about a two mile trip to the bus, if something happened to them, I would like to be able to find them. Can this program do this?This site did offer some information and questions you should ask yourself, it gave important information about kids and letting them text. The site did give you the pro and cons of this, and I found that very useful.I just felt there could of been more.

You have checked connections, called your ISP, and your security updates. Yet none are taking care of the problem. I believe I have the answer for this. I was at one point in your shoes.

I talked to friends, other computer geeks, and I even took my 'puter to the local computer doctor. That last one cost more money than I was willing to pay. On top of that, I was without a computer. However, the guy who worked on our computer suggested a couple of sites to download some free computer helpers.

I forgot the names of the web sites. I used a search engine to help me find sites. Out of the many sites out there, I have found Major Geeks to be the best and easiest to find what I need. Most of the downloads are free. They have many mirrors to get to sites for product and updates for that product. They have a forum to ask and find...

Was quoted $90 for my old laptop that works, good battery, and powercord. When they received the laptop they said that they would only give $20 for the laptop. They said that it was the condition I stated but that the computer was cracked. My computer was never cracked. It comes from an adult household and we don't throw our computers around. He also said that there was a lot of wear to the computer. Well its an OLD laptop what do you want. I put that in the comments before I sent it. I refused their offer and asked them to send the laptop back. They said they would charge $20 to send the laptop back which of course I fought. I looked all over their website and found there is no mention of a return fee and also quoted them word for word their policy on the matter. The guy who I spoke with "Gerome" got angry and started yelling that I was trying to scam them out of the $20 return fee and "I think I'm really smart looking through their terms and conditions because no one ever does...

The one time there was a problem, customer service was receptive and had a cross-ship worked out within 5 minutes. The replacement came quickly and worked beautifully.

I have used almost all online service facilities since the dawn of the internet and I have browsed probably all popular websites with my research work but have never thought of putting up my own website someday. Until I had to advertise my work and services online that I realized I need to know beyond browsing and come up with something very creative like the things I learned and discovered from Domain Processing, it was a great experience. Even if I never had any formal training on internet and programming with the use of Domain Processing everything was simplified, this is truly what I call user-friendly. If there is such a users manual like that of Domains for Idiots this site Domain Processing is more like it except that its more positive cause I don't feel like an "idiot" using it, instead I felt so smart and probably even geeky, so to speak....

I recently upgraded to OS X 10.5 and love it but for one thing, I never could tell when a window was open without careful scrutiny of the dock. Then I read about Leopard Docks. With this free software you can change your dock to any one that is available. First download the LeopardDocs App and place it in your applications folder. Download as many of the available docks as you wish and place them in the utilities folder. When you want to change the dock simply choose the one you want and click "change my dock" as many times as desired. The one I use allows me to see at a glance if a window is open so I won't leave my browser open all night. Again! If you enjoy creating apps it is easy to upload a new dock for others to enjoy and all are welcome. Again, if you want to try a new dock, check back often to see what is new....

I am very pleased with Lynda.com. Graphic design technology has changed a lot since I graduated from college seven years ago, so I signed up for a membership to brush up on the new applications. I set up another monitor for an extended desktop on my MAC, so I can play the tutorial video on one monitor and do the exercises on the main monitor. It works out great. I even take notes, so I can always go back and look at them. Right now, I am taking the Dreamweaver CS3: Essential Training class.

This is a great alternative to taking college courses to brush up on applications, if money is an issue. Adobe even offers an option of a 30 day free trial membership for lynda.com when you register Adobe products.

The only con that I have with lynda.com is that the tutorial files for the videos are only available to the "premium" yearly membership subscribers, which is a little pricey. I am a monthly subscriber, so I have to create dummy pages to do the tutorials.

None the less, it's money well spent....

DO NOT USE WIREFLY!!! I tried to sign up for the E*TRADE "Free" Blackberry deal through Wirefly. They made me email their customer service (outsourced to India) copies of my social security card, drivers license and other personal information. This process took over a week and totalled 5 hours of my time, as many of the materials I submitted were deemed "unacceptable", even through I am a verified ETRADE member and have been with my current wireless provider at the same address for over 10 years. Finally after speaking with over six customer service agents throughout the week, one informed me that I could just answer three special "security questions" and my identity and shipping address would be confirmed. Wow, so after all the hoops I had to jump through, all the hours of scanning & faxing personal information and responding to emails, after the hundreds of minutes of my current wireless plan I wasted on hold to speak with a rep. they told me I could have simply answered three questions?????......

Kim Komando's web site komando.com is in my opinon the best web site out there that addresses every issue out there technology wise. There are tips of the day, free downloads of the day and much more. I am always finding new cool useful things on her site. There are also forums to go on, I have never had a computer problem yet that hasn't been solved in those forums.

Most of the info is free, but there are some areas that require a paid membership; which I have subscribed to. I feel it is worth the small fee. But you can still get a wealth of info without subscribing.

Mad Science programs are quite popular in our neck of the woods. A mad scientist puts on a show that makes science fun and exciting.
