About a year ago a friend and business associate was over with his wife for a Sunday evening dinner.

After dinner we were talking about his business when he asked if I might be able to help him out by making some Public Relations telephone calls for him. So we discussed what the message would be and got that all squared away. He went out to his car and when he returned he tossed a little silver gizmo to me and said, "use this to make the calls."

It was a Magic Jack. His business is in Ft. Lauderdale and of course I live in Boca Raton (another County). It'll look better on the caller ID he claimed. He plugged it into my laptop, we spent just a few minutes setting it up and we plugged a corded phone into it. To test it I called my daughter in New York. She heard me loud and clear and her caller ID identified the call as originating in Ft. Lauderdale.

VOIP on the cheap

Magic Jack is basically a VOIP device that permits you to make free calls over th Internet. I'm not sure what...
...

I have been using the Magic Jack for almost a month now and have only found one thing abot it that they dont tell you.Imean it works great as long as you dont get too close to your hard drive.I think that has to do with the wiring schematic in the jack itself. I love it otherwise since it only costs $ 20.00 for a whole year and no other charges.I can call Canada and USA also any jack in the world. If I wanted to pay 20 more it would be the world. Now that it is programmed for me I can take it anywhere and plug it in any other pc or laptop and it will work.
...

The Magic Jack is a new invention that brings your computer and telephone together for a better phone bill and many options that you can use for free. Like long distance, 3 way calling and voice mail.

However in the 2 weeks that I have been using it I haven't be completly satisfied. My calls have been full of static, the connection keeps messing up and you have to go in and fix it online. Then you have to have your computer on at all times so that the program can work properly.

If you have kids you have to make sure they never close the Magic Jack program or you won't recieve you phone calls.

All in all I'm not all that pleased with the Magic Jack.

Ok, I've been using it for about 3 months now and nothing is better. It's gotten worse. I get beeps and stuff all the time and hang ups. Plus the phone number that shows up on caller id is never the same.

The hold music isn't that great either.

When you get a call on the other end and you flip over the other caller can hear your phone calls and...
...

Magic Jack is a great little "phone" tool. You certainly can't beat the price. I really haven't had much trouble with it - the better your internet service, the better phone service you will get. I had it hooked up to a laptop with a wireless connection, and although it worked with the laptop and wireless, the internet connection was not all that great, so my service with Magic Jack wasn't always that great. Still wasn't too bad considering the price! When I hooked it up to my regular internet service and desktop computer, had MUCH less problems and much better service. I had to contact customer service because I had purchased their five year plan and the actual Magic Jack unit broke. I needed a replacement because my time was paid for for the next FIVE years! The online chat people were HORRIBLE -- couldn't understand why they weren't READING my chats. Then I found out they were from another country and really couldn't read English!! I finally got someone in the billing department to speak...
...

pitcherday says "Magic Jack is a terrible product" about Magic Jack

I knew the $19.95 for a year thing was way too good to be true. But my husband wanted to try it. What a huge mistake. At least it didn't end up being too costly a mistake.

I have a fast cable internet connection which should be good enough for this gadget. With this thing, my voice skipped and dragged, and there were delays. The people I called told me of long, awkward silences, where they would talk and I wouldn't respond and hung up most of the time because they thought I was disconnected. If I said to someone: "I stopped by your house today." It sounded like this to ME (I could hear myself speak): " I stop-stop-stop by by by by houuuuuuuuuuse!" That was the awkward silences to the other people. I couldn't speak until I stopped hearing myself speak. It was really static-y on those calls when you could have a conversation.

Don't even try to use your computer while someone is on the phone. It's impossible.

Also, if you switch phones, they do not let you take your number with you.

Jonathan97202 says "Worth the Effort" about Magic Jack

Ok, like many people I have my phone, cable and internet bundled. In this day and age everything is about technology. I have used internet phones before like Vonage, and found it to be alright however I always ended up back with Comcast where it was all bundled. I heard about Magic Jack orginally from the commercial and being the skeptic I am, I didn't think much of it. My mom got one for her fax line and swears by it. So I bit the bullet and ordered one and hooked it up right away. I really like it, the sound quality is good, you get all the features like call waiting, caller ID, phone number for life, free directory assistance, free long distance. The aesthetixc of the product is appealing, it isn't bulky. The only problem I have is, that you can't turn your computer off while you have it plugged in if you do you can not use it... Which makes sense since it's connected to your internet. HOwever when running updates, or virus scans it can slow it down. This product...
...

I was very excited when I saw the advertisement on televison. I have used Vonage for years and had many expectations for this product. I purchased this product for my very value conscious grandmother. She is on a limited income and I try to help her save every penny she comes across. When we received it, I thought that it would be as simple and as easy to use as vonage, however, it wasn't. First of all they neglected to mention that if you happen to live in New Hampshire you can not get a local telephone number, then even if you don't mind that, and you have either a massachussetts or vermont number, it did not work very well at all. Although we could hear other people, they couldn't hear us at all. If this product has worked for others, I think that it would be awesome! However, since I had such a negative experience I DO NOT recommend it to others! If and when it does work for people in New Hampshire I will absolutly try it again.
...

I received my Magic Jack as a birthday gift. You can not bet $19.99 for one year service and no long or local distance charges, no peak time charges, and can call anywhere in the US without charge. My cell phone service with 3 phones has run me from $250 to $500 per month.

Your not going to find any cell phone or land line this cheap and no dropped calls. Clarity of a phone call has been great 99% of the time. When the internet connect is extremely slow, then clarity has been a problem (this has to do with the internet service provider, not issue of the Magic Jack).
...

I don't make many long distance calls - - - maybe a couple per year. So I hate how most of the long distance companies will charge you a minimum $5 per month, no matter what.

Then on the DrudgeReport.com was a link to CoVista. It was a long distance company that had no minimum per month charge, and you didn't have to dial a bunch of extra number to access their service. You just gave them the phone number you would be calling FROM, and then dial the 1 plus the 10 digit phone number. Great connection. No problems.

UNTIL they changed something in their billing system, and all of a sudden, they couldn't figure out how to automatically debit my checking account. So I got hit with a $15 surcharge on the CoVista webpage. I didn't know about the problem until a few days later when I looked at my bank account online to see how much last month's long distance call cost me, and there were NO charges. So I called them, was told about the changes THEY were going through, and gave them......
