pinkjam510 says "My Favorite Pet Ever" about Parakeets

I have had parakeets since I was age 3. After having parakeets for over twenty years, I am not sure I could adjust to anything else. While growing up my family was initially attracted to parakeets for their low maintenance and gentle nature. There isn't a lot of physical or financial responsibility for parakeets. Although I am sure they can be taken to the vet, I have never felt the need to do so. Without veternarian costs, parakeets are very cost friendly.

Through the years my parakeets have become my best friends. I currently have two. Although my parakeets love each other, they still look forward to spending time with me. They do need time and affection like any other pet would need. If you feel that you do not have enough time to devote to them, get them a friend. My parakeets are not in the same cage but I place them beside each other if I am gone for a prolonged period of time.

Parakeets can bite but that is rare and infrequent as long as they are given the proper...
...

I just had to give a review on the SunConure. They are so much fun and love lots of attention. There colors are amazing. Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange, Green. The first one I bought in April of 2009. He was a baby in which I hand-fed. He is a lover boy. He loves to hang out upside down in his cage. He talks a lot, at times I find him laying on his back playing with his toys. He is so funny. They love to give kisses and just hang out on my shoulder. He is now talking and he says "I love you" and he says "Mama". He is truly a wonderful companion. The second one I got is only 5 weeks old I am still hand feeding this one I named him Crimson. He is already playing on his back. I'll look in his box and he'll be just laying there on his back. He is just getting his pin feathers. They are quit a site before they feather out. He is on 3 feedings a day. I have noticed him starting to eat pellets and drinking some water. It will be about a month or so before he...
...

njchicaa says "Keep parrots busy and happy with this Hide-N-Seek Foraging Toy." about Paradise Hide N Seek Foraging Toy

I love my 3 parrots, but the reality is that I work a full-time job and there is usually at least one day a week when they don't get any out-of-cage time. I have been getting them into foraging and trying various foraging toys with them to keep them busy and entertained during the hours that they spend in their cages. The Paradise Hide-N-Seek Foraging Toy is the newest one that I've purchased.

The Paradise Hide N Seek Foraging Toy is made of clear blue plastic with several small/medium holes and is stuffed with wicker balls, colored wooden balsa shapes, and paper shreds. The whole idea of this toy is to make your parrots really work to try to get the stuff they like to chew on out of the small openings. They are such smart animals that it really requires a challenging puzzle like this to keep them happy and busy while they are alone in their cage.

My Eclectus immediately went up to this Foraging Toy and started pulling out the paper shreds. She chirped, cooed, and laughed at...
...

Large parrots require a very specific diet, including fresh fruits, vegetables, and lots of nuts. I feed all 3 of my parrots (Eclectus, Blue and Gold Macaw, and Timneh African Grey) a homemade mixture of brown rice, beans, chopped greens, and mixed frozen veggies including corn, carrots, peas, lima beans, broccoli, butternut squash, etc. Still, I like to also offer a dry mix to the birds every few days as a little treat. I use Bird Paradise Ultimate Blend for Cockatoos and Macaws with my 6 year old BG Macaw.

This is a custom mix for large parrots like cockatoos and macaws that is made in-house by a New Jersey bird superstore: Bird Paradise. They say that the recipe is a secret, but I can tell you that it contains pistachios, dried papaya, banana chips, walnuts, almonds, dried green beans, dried peas, dried carrots, dried figs (I think), dried hot peppers, hazelnuts, coconut shreds, raisins, pumpkin seeds, and uncolored pellets... and that listing is probably only 50% of the ingredients...
...

Well Ive been raising animals of all kinds my whole life and what i feed them is very important. I want to make sure they always have the highest in protein, moisture, and all of their daily vitamins they need to stay healthy, fit, and happy. Purina has one of the highest in protein and nutrition that a dog needs. Not only that, they actually love the taste of it. I would definitely recommend to this brand of dog food to all dog owners and dog lovers. I always give my two big and beautiful dogs a big bowl in the morning which they eat very quickly and a small bowl for lunch and a big bowl at dinner. Their coats are always shiny and they have beautiful muscle tone. So if you plan on ever having a new puppy go for the purina puppy chow. and if you have a big dog thats full grown go for dog chow.
...

I love love love love sunflower seeds. I eat them 24/7 and I just realized awhile ago that, they have something addicting in them that makes you love them.. And so thats how I realized thats why I loved them soo much!. :) My mom, and dad gets them all the time for me, and then my sister and her boyfriend get them all the time too., and so do all of my friends. I always make messes with them accidently because they are easy too drop. I dont mean to but it just happens. If you havent ever had sunflower seeds you should try them. because they are good, good, good! =) There are tons of diffrent kinds like Ranch, Barbaque, Orignal, etc. I usually just get the orginal ones, but just try and see what suits you the best.. and what you like the best, I probably eat about two packs a week, and i dont know if they are bad for you or not, but if they are then Im in troubleee..! lol. All I have to say about them is YUm, YUm YUm.
...

We own an adorable Goffin's Cockatoo. She is one of the smallest of the Cockatoo species, but still measure about a foot in height (maybe closer to 10 inches) and very light weight. She is quite the character and loves to sing, dance and play silly games. Ours is named Chilly, and she is the nice cool version of her namesake in the morning, but become the alliterative hot active "Chili" pepper in the evening -- with hyper activity to boot!

Her favorite games are to play swing, take showers, and dance when you sing to her. She has her own language and knows about a dozen words, but you'd have to know her to understand what she is saying. Alluded to above, she is super snuggly and sweet in the morning and wants to sit on your chest like a cat and be petted (yes, petted), and makes all sorts of sweet little sounds. In the evening she flips sides in an over-active 2-yr old, the side most people are not prepared for, and wants to play, play, play. Scream just to here herself. And wants to be...
...

I've had Finches for several years now. I enjoy them and can find good bird seed for them at Wal-mart during my weekly shopping. They chirp away not too loudly. I have them sitting in a window so they can observe the outdoors nicely too. They don't spray their seed outside the cage normally; oh, but I guess I have clear hard plastic sheets on all four sides which helps prevent that. I clean their cage by vacuuming out all the seeds and replacing the newspaper in the bottom under a wire grid on top of the newspaper...about every 3-4 months actually. I have a whole house air purifier that really keeps the particulate from their feathers and dander from flying around plus it removes any odor that may be present before I get around to cleaning the cage. I've had all white Finches and darker colored ones. Like I say, they are a joy to have and make natural background noise when we're eating supper as a family at the Dining Room table near them.
...

If you know anything about animals you know they are all sorts of different things which include funny, sweet, loving, and protective. in life you encounter all sorts of animals in all sorts of environments and sittuations and you should always be respectfull no matter what. this gives you the chance to catch a glimse of animals doing what they do best. I as an animal owner have experienced quite alot of these things and let me be the first to say that i dont understand how people go through life not having a pet or being mean to them. they are incredible creatures and they will love you no matter what. They deserve for us to do the same. Some of the experiences I have had are funny and some are bad. It's rather hard not to get attatched to something and then after time for some reason you lose them it's no fun. if they have become part of your family its even harder, sometimes it can feel like your heart is being yanked out but then you have all the funny things they are well known for...
...

My sister and myself, always had pet parakeets growing up. It started 1st, when my sister recieved one for a birthday gift, and then I. Unfortunately, hers was sick and died 2 weeks after recieving it. She then went and picked out another, (for free from store since 1st one was sick), and that one actually lived for a couple of years. About 5 or so, believe it or not! This bird actually learned how to speak! Parakeets are in the parrot family, thus, they can learn to talk. The best way to teach them is by covering the cage, sticking your head under so that there are no distractions, and consistantly keep repeating the same word or phrase. They are not noted for talking, and it is somewhat hard to distinquish, however, in the middle of thier chirp sessions, you will hear "Chippy...blah, blah, blah", (that was his name), mixed in the middle. They can be a little messy or noisy, both which can be easily solved. They have cage keepers that wrap around the bottom so their...
...

My sister actually owned 2 Blue and Gold Macaws. Not at the same time, but overall, 2. The first she bought from a private owner and she was about 1 yr. old at the time. Initially, I was scared. This giant beak is walking towards me and I don't know what it wants! When I finally saw how friendly and affectionate this thing was, I couldn't believe it! My sister recieved a 10 page letter on how to care for it, including singing her and rocking her to sleep if she couldn't. Unfortunately, she died at approx. 5 yrs. old of a liver disease, which appartently these birds are succeptable to. After her loss, my sister went and bought another as a baby at our local pet store. Same affection and love, but never enough. My sister would take her out and play with her daily, as would I. After a few years, with my sister going to school and working, she could no longer give the bird the attention it needed. The bird started to react by screaming and plucking it's feathers. ...
...

We have had many animals in the past and still do. Our latest is a baby blue and gold macaw. She is fun to be with and lets everyone in the family handle her unlike some of the other birds we have. my children will even hold her and they are 14 and 7. Our africian grey will only stick to my husband she wont let anyone else get her unless she flew to floor and needs to get up then she'll let you touch her.

She is playful, we play games on the floor, she rolls over and lays on her back and will sometime hang upside down on her back when holding her. My daughter hopes to show her other things she saw a show with a macaw riding a bike and hopes now she will do the same. She has tried playing ball on the floor with her.

They do make a mess with food and wood, we have pieces of the wood toys all over the place. The dogs do help with the food and its great that they eat people food to so when we eat we give her some to and the dogs love it when she drops it.

Shes starting to stay things like hello...
...

These little guys are amazing! My husband and I rescued a sennie 8 months ago. He was cage bound, plucked bald, terrified of everyting, 70g instead of his healthy 140 and sick from a myriad of infections. Poor little Buddy was at the vet within hours of us getting him, and the vet didn't think he would live, He had been kept in a tiny canary cage with no perches or toys and his food and water were only changed once a week (if his owner remembered) He was never played with because he was ugly and loud and bitey. Since getting Buddy, we have purchased a large cage for him and an aviary for the backyard. he gets to tease his brother, an african grey all day and they love to throw food at eachother. Buddy loves to eat. He eats all of the time and is now a little chubby. We dont mind, the vet said he isnt unhealthy and he looks great. He is in full feather and beautiful. he loves both my husband and I equally (thought a bit differently) and is patient and civil with strangers, even children....
...

The Droll Yankee Flipper is definetly squirrel proof. I have bought other feeders that say squirrel proof and the sneaky little buggers get into the seed anyway but with this one they can NOT get to the seed. If they get on it they spin round and round (which is so much fun to watch) and get spun off. Don't worry they won't get hurt and it only takes one time for them to learn not to get on. It is expensive but worth the price to keep the squirrels out of the bird seed. We have squirrel feeders so they do get their food but they like to eat the birds first so this keeps them off. It is made to last so even though it is expensive it will last forever. The battery charge last a long time.
...

Yankee Flipper Squirrel Proof Birdfeeder is a great one, it does feed the birds but not the squirrels,I feed the squirrels peanuts so I like to keep the birdseed for the birds, and this does keep the squirrels out.My backyard is an animal haven for all the little critters, but I love to sit and watch them in the afternoon or evenings it is so peaceful, a great stress buster to watch nature and relax, grab a glass of your fav drink a snack and or a book and visit the outdoors in your own backyard. We all need a stressfree haven so why not make one at your own home and this squirrel proof feeder for the feathered friends adds to that by keeping the birds happy and fed . So next time life gives you lemons make some lemonade and relax in your own back yard enjoying the birds and creatures of nature, The price of this one is a little high for a bird feeder but it does work and it saves you money on feed by keeping the squirrels eating their own cheaper food.
...

I went to the local aviary to purchase an Umbrella Cockatoo. After asking my lifestyle and work habits, the store owner swayed me over to purchase a Bare Eyed Cockatoo instead. Best advise I'd ever been given, and perfect match! Bare Eyeds (or Little Corellas) are native to Australia and need very little attention to be happy. Very smart and intuitive, these birds live a long time, so be prepared to make a lifelong commitment when raising them. My female picks up tricks in a very short time; she was waving and saying "go bye-bye" at just 7 weeks old! She likes to cuddle and knows what "give me a hug" means as she nuzzles my cheek. Not extremely talkative, but words are annunciated properly. I can go to work for 8 hours a day, and there was no squawking or scraming when I'm not there, and everything is status quo when I do get home!
...

But with good looks come a very loud squawk, sometimes when they are happy, sometimes as a warning. I have a hand fed Macaw six years old who is a cuddler and a talker. He does scream when his cage mate gets down out of their cage and walks around, so he's warning me. They are a lifelong commitment and will give years of pleasure to someone who absolutely loves birds. Boarding them when you vacation is not cheap, neither are the food or toys, which are both consumable products for them. You shouldn't mind sweeping or vacuuming as they are used to throwing food down from the trees when the live in the wild, to animals down below, so they will certainl do that from their cage. I love my macaw, but they aren't for everyone. Get your fix at the pet shop, but leave them there if you cannot give them a lifetime of love.
...

Yvonja says "The BEST companion bird ever!" about Pet Parrot Quaker

My Quaker Parrot's name is Verdito (translated: Little Green). He is a very loving, playful, smart bird. Since my husband & I don't swear Verdito has not learned any swears. He says things like, "Peek-a-boo, I see you!". This is also one of his favorite games. Quaker Parrot's love to play eye games. They love to have a small towel put over them & find their way out to play hide & seek w/ you. We use a fleece baby birp cloth as it is very light weight. Verdito loves his snuggle time w/ me in the eve as I recline on the couch watching TV. He snuggles right up to my chin or mouth so he can feel my breath on him & lets me rub his belly or head. He'll turn his head to indicate where he wants me to scratch - his cheeks or above his beek. He whistles or screams when he wants attention. He plays word games: He'll say, "You're a good", I'll say "Bird". I'll say, "You're a ...", He'll say, "Good. I'll say, "bird". We'll take turns whistling 1/2 of the wolf call to each other. Some of his favorite...
...

gmac says "The Yankee Flipper Squirrel Proof Birdfeeder is a good one." about Yankee Flipper Squirrel Proof Birdfeeder

The "Yankee Flipper Squirrel Proof Birdfeeder is a good one. This is my third squirrel proof bied feeder and this is by far the best. The pesty squirrels in my area actually broke the previous bird feeders trying to get the seeds out. They would shake the feeder allowing some seeds to drop to the ground but with presistence the eventually broke the feeder allowing them easy access to the feeder. I have had the " Yankee Flipper Squirrel Proof Birdfeeder" since April and it is still in good shape. The squirrels seem to have gotten frustrated and have left it alone. They are still shaking the other squirrel proof feeder and are able to get some seeds from it, but the " Yankee Flipper Squirrel Proof Birdfeeder" is doing its job. I plan to purchase another " Yankee Flipper Squirrel Proof Birdfeeder" next year and will reccommend that my other bird loving friends buy one also. My garden would not be complete without the birds.
...
