davedahl says "Fantastic beer list, good pub food, and pool." about The Ashland Bar - Chicago, IL

Visited this damn solid establishment on Feb 23rd after spending the day at Delilah's Vintage Strong Beer Festival with my bud Brendan. The place is basically a big room with a decent length bar down the left side, some tables scattered about, and a pool table. — One guy was serving the whole bar while managing to keep his pool game going with his friends. He did a great job of it, while being friendly and answering questions about the menu and beer list. We both had burgers which were fantastic for bar-food, and the beer list is generous. Plenty of BMC et al, but also Founders, Victory, Dogfish Head, and much much more. — Is it a destination? Possibly. Should you go while in the neighborhood? Definitely. —...

I stumbled upon the Bar on Buena on my way to the Uptown library - Ya, go figure. Beer follows me or I follow Beer. Either way we find each other. — — Patio, couches, booths, bar-stools and tables... As far as seating go, I think they have it covered. Good brew selection and some not-so-easy-to-find beers on tap and served in the right glass as well. They also have a good bottle collection and some real cool specials like $5 martini nites. I am a huge fan of the Spicy chicken wrap and the sweet potato fries. It is crowded over the weekends but on any given day, you can find a place for a small party easily enough....

This is a coffee shop/martini bar. The atmosphere is chilled and fun. It is setup as your living room. It has beautiful art and paintings on the walls. It has art books you can browse through. It is a place you rarely find even in big cities. It has the feel of a bar you would find in NYC or Seattle; or the big metropolitan towns of Mexico. The coffee comes from Veracruz, which is one of Mexico's coffee producing state. It is organic and it is GOOD. It tastes like coffee, not like waterdowned coffee.
— You can go alone or with a friend, or with a group of friends. You can bring your laptop to do your homework; you can watch the futbol games on the large screen TVs. Or you can just go and chill with the bartender. It is a nice place to just go and hang out. —...

RayvenMoon84 says "Best place on Fridays For Goths, Emos and everyone else." about Plague - Portland, ME

Outside of the typical bar scene in Portland if you are a goth you really have only one option besides staying home. And that is heading downtown to the Asylum Sports Bar and then Downstairs into the black hole that is Plague. I have been up here in Portland for two years and this is my favorite place to go. Its on the small end of the New England Goth scene, but we manage to have some of the best DJs are Djs Xero, Doomsday Jones, The Reverand Benjiman James, Znuh, Mothra, Gabriel 8-bit, Dehuman8, and Lithia to name a few. The music is good and the drinks are too. — — Plague is every Friday and runs from 9 to 1am unless the weather is crappy and will mess with parking availibility. Before 9:30 there is no door charge but from then on its a mere 4$ to get in and have some fun. The dance floor space is small but we all manage to fill it and not bump into each other. — — Of course if you are not a dancer there are plenty of bar stools and two couches to...

First and last time I was there, I was there early; only 2 customers in the bar. The decor and mood of the place was modern, clean; I was impressed. It's too bad that I wasn't compatible with the attitude, music selection, or clientele. Glad we didn't stay long enough to enjoy the light show from the police cars. Seems, every time I am downtown on a weekend night near "closing time", there are police parked out front. Too bad. So, I guess, go really early, and leave soon...

I went to Prive for my 23rd birthday, with my sister. She paid for bottle service which is provided in "V.I.P." Someone else in "V.I.P." had a problem with their drinks so the owner came over to talk to them. The ladies told him the drinks were watered down and they didn't want their money back, they wanted different drinks. The owner then went on to tell them that they had drank too much of their drinks to suddenly have a problem with them; that was a complete lie, the glasses were filled to the rim when they got them and they barely sipped them. After the owner was done talking to them as though he didn't need their business, he then turned to my sister and I. My sister motioned towards the bucket that the, empty, bottle was in. She wasn't being rude, mean, or nasty. He looked her up and down and told her he is the owner and he doesn't do low things such as pick up bottles, he has a staff to do that. My sister calmly...

Well this is the new trend in Chicago the "Gastropub" which mean just a very large pub with food! — It has all the typical micro-brews. Typical wood decor with a bar and chairs in the front and tables in the back. Yes I do agree it is crowded on weekends and it wasn't that loud when I was there but people are drinking so they talk loud. The food I sampled from others was okay. I think its just good food that will goes with beer. I would go with a group for fun or a couple of friends its not your local pub to sit at the bar by yourself. Its in trendy Andersonville so be ready for a non-conservative crowd so don't be surprised to see 2 men holding hands.... I would go again but not a...

Beer, glorious beer! Go around the world in 80 minutes (more if you are making a night of it - or less if you are on a death wish) and taste the beers from around the world at The Map Room. God, I love this place. First of all, they serve the tall, slender stick pretzels that go great with beer. Second, they have a phenomenal, down-right educational list of beers. Hundreds of beers adorn the menu and chalk list and, even though the maps aren't exactly accurate, maps of the world are painted on the walls in life size. Who doesn't want to drink beer while Sao Paulo, Brazil stares you in the face? And if the maps themselves don't grab you, go for one of the classic, elegant, delicate, make-you-want-to-trade-all-your-belongings-in-for-a-good-camera, National Graphic that line the walls by the droves. Most are as old as 30 years, and wear it as if they were read over and over again with love and passion.
jmdobies says "Venerable Austin Pub with Great Taps, and Shepherd's Pie to Boot" about Mother Egan's Irish Pub - Austin, TX

Mother Egan's Irish Pub is a great place to hang, have a Guinness or three and some good corned beef and cabbage. It is located on that beery, boozy boulevard of many bars, 6th Street in downtown Austin. — While their Guinness Stout cascades with the best of 'em, Mother Egan's also offers a plentiful variety of fine ales to delight the palate and dull the senses. In addition to the many fine pours available here, there is also a lean, mean menu of fightin' irish favorites like their hearty Shepherd's Pie (I loves me some Shepherd's Pie, man, lemme tell ya) and the aforementioned corned beef and cabbage. — If you are visiting Austin, or live here, it is inevitable that you will visit 6th Street. While you're there, stop by Mother Egan's Irish Pub for some genuine Irish flavor balanced by good ol' Austin weirdness. — ...

jmdobies says "Legendary Austin Club Rocks Six Nights a Week" about Emo's - Austin, TX

Emo's is a club that has played host to some of the leading lights of alternative/indie rock over the years and continues to present a stellar line-up of bands week in and week out. — — My first experience with Emo's was a Saturday night show featuring Holly Golighlty and local Austin garage rock band the Ugly Beats. The music was awesome, the crowd was into it, and a great time was had by all. — — My only complaints are that the cover charge (not to mention the beer prices) can be a little high, and the sound mix tends to be a little muddy. — — From the Emo's website: — — Emo's, though it may scar your memory for quite some time, wasn't always the hopping place with the fun murals it is today. In fact, the murals, and Emo's, came along quite recently. — — Back in the day, when Emo's wasn't Emo's, Emo's was some other bar. That was probably back before 6th Street was paved. Even back then there were probably crackheads...

This is my favorite place- and I couldn't help but write it up- I'm constanly recommending it! Steamer's Jazz Cafe is a local favorite in Fullerton, California. The venue features live jazz, blues, swing, or big band seven days a week. Bands usually do 2-3 sets of an hour each. Its on the smallish side, so you need to call ahead for reservations to get the best table possible. They have amazing drinks (try the Key Lime Martini- it's to die for!), and a decadent dessert tray.
novagirl says "Absolute best burger I have ever had-- and a great beer list" about Father's Office - Santa Monica, CA

I have been temporarily living in So Cal for the past 6 weeks, looking for an East Coast type of bar. Father's Office (or FO as everyone there refers to it as) was recommended to me by a local. Hands down the BEST burger and fries I have had. They make them up their way with caramelized onions, bacon, a bit of gruyere and blue cheese, excellent angus beef topped with arugula and a sourdough roll. You can get either sweet potato fries or regular fries but they are freshly cut. — But it is tough love there-- no subs, no removals-- the burger and other menu items are what they are. You can order how you want the meat cooked but that is it. No ketchup, mustard, mayo or relish. Not even for fries. Their attitude is that they know there burger is good, as long as you don't mess it up. I kind of appreciate that commit to something-- we will stand by it but we have to do it our way. And it is GOOD their way-- get past the description for the combo is fine. And...
